buying quality definitely makes sense. I collected quite a bit of out board gear in the past, all studio grade. I purged most of it a couple of years ago because I wasn’t needing it anymore, and got all the money back... sometimes getting more per piece, sometimes less than I paid.

Great tips. It actually makes sense to buy classic analog gear and avoiding to pay so much taxes in the end of the year. Very smart indeed. Money will always be there when you need it. However, it really needs to be some equipment which doesn't depreciate much in terms of value, otherwise, if you buy a computer, you will definitely loose money.

Power Conditioners clean up the electric signal. It doesn't do anything much for audio tone, or quality, but it does help protect your gear from stuff like power surges and brown outs. I have a Voltage Regulator which is a type of power conditioner that helps maintain a steady flow of electricity whenever there's fluctuation of highs and lows. In my home studio my power dims occasionally when I do laundry when the machines power up, so it's just a layer of protection for your gear and computer. When you invest 10s or 100s of thousands of dollars into a career like this, your first line of defense in protecting your gear is what it's plugged into.

I think power-conditioning is less important now since a lot of equipment already has power conditioning built into it's own circuits now - but a good safety if you can afford - not all gear obviously has it but certainly more each year if you look at gear from the 70's up to now (especially in high-end equipment)

peace bro, enjoy your honesty and life tinkering in music. I would recommend if you start doing "Jon Sine Voodoo" episodes that you choose a different name. Voodoo derives from old spiritual traditions in Africa (now in places like Haiti and the US "Vodun"). I want to spare you people taking offense or KZbin flagging your channel because the use of "voodoo" could be seen as derogatory/hateful. I'm sure you don't mean nothing by the use of it but I can see the writing on the wall. Maybe Jon Sine's "Smoke and Mirrors" or something.

Are you not running balanced lines to everything? That is a total game changer. Consider large format sound systems for a moment. That is what I work in most anymore. We aren't usually dealing with small voltages either. As I said that I realized your common voltage is high voltage for us as for us most gear runs on 120 volts. That is one downside to higher voltage. It radiates through the air further. Even so balanced lines should eliminate that depending on what system they are using internally in the gear. Just a thought. A lot of people use unbalanced connections and find they have noise problems. In both studios and live systems you are dealing with so much gear in such a small space unbalanced is going to pick of noise like crazy. You may have done this. It is just a thought but in my experience with balanced lines and proper grounding (no ground loops) the noise from the cable should end up below the noise floor of the gear itself. 1 caveat though. More gear = more connections = more noise so that is a bit of a sliding scale.
@Synth2000
@Synth2000 3 жыл бұрын
I have easily double or triple the gear that Jon has, my mains comes in as 243V and I am having a lot of trouble. A LOT of airborne radiation. My pultecs sound like crap in this place, plus extra transformer humming, and some gear not performing well or failing. Spent already 1 month removing all ground loops. My next step is to fully review the grounding scheme, because there is also a derivation between ground and line. Then once that is fixed I will go balanced. Some places just need a full overhaul to be workable as an studio, and the sooner you take care of it the better.
@MrRoberacer
@MrRoberacer 3 жыл бұрын
@@Synth2000 There is the balanced line thing. Also I have heard that if you use power for some of the gear from opposing phases that can cause issues. Honestly I really don't understand how that can happen because in a live audio system we run 3 phase power all of the time. That means that they gear is definitely not all running on the same supply phase also almost all gear internally uses DC power so it has it's own power rectification/filtering section to deal with that very thing. If there is an electronics guy who can chime in this would be great. One studio I worked at was situated right by a power dam and they had strange noises but a friend of ours came over who is an electronics guy. We went through and source grounded the entire room which eliminated all of the ground loops. Almost all of the noise when away then. Source grounding means you cut the ground at every receive end so the shield is only connected to the source piece. After than the other thing to do is transformer decouple as sometimes the chasse is tied to the signal. Grounding can be very frustrating. Funny story. I was doing a show one time in this old building and they literally had no ground. PA has to be grounded. I had noise hell. My solution. Cut an end off of and extension cord, bare the wires inside, tie the ground strap on the panel to the other end of the extension cord and throw the bare wire end into the lake. Instant ground. Definitely not CSA approved. The show did go on and no noise.

Jon, I saw in one of your videos, that you do jogging - this is really helpful - but you should not do it in the city, because there is so much pollution (and nano dust) from the cars that drive constantly there.
