It works if you know what you're doing and why you're sapping. If I sap and intend to survive, it's because I am intending to delay the engie while the rest of his team is busy, preventing him from pushing his defense forward. If I sap and I am expecting to die, that's because I know my team is ready to push but needs the extra support to ensure that it is a successful push

@@poyloos4834 problem with soldier or demo sometimes is that they can lose to a sentry immediately if the Engineer knows a good spot that gets their sentry out of range. This wouldn't be much of a problem if it was one engineer, but if the enemy team has about 3-4 engineers, it's actually impossible to break through that defense because an engineer will be working on repairing the front sentry with assistance from the sentries at the back and hidden away, thus requiring a medic and good teamwork to pull through. Then the Pybros come in with their flamethrowers and push you away while their medics counter uber. Now it has gone from bad to worse. This isn't a rare scenario btw, this is a common one when the defending team is really desperate to win. This is where spy excels. Invisibility lets you get into their nest and feed your team info, or let you pull off a full deconstruction of the nest. The noise generated from constant fire helps you decloak..

Important thing I think you missed with the Frontier Justice: If the engie whiffs his shot, but still some pellets hit and you don't die instantly, the CRITICAL HIT! marker above your head stays visible even when cloaked, so don't overstay your welcome if the engie doesn't 1 tap you

All the engineer's buildings can also be taken advantage of by spy in some way. You can surf any sentry if you're advanced enough and the enemy team isn't immune to the level 3 rockets, dispensers are obviously support tools that can also be leverage to trickstab off of and teleporters can be the perfect traps and can also be jumped off of. Though aside from those points, it's unreal how well designed these two classes are in accordance with each other.

I think you're underestimating the disepenser's importance. While it isnt usually the priority, there ARE definitely times when its the one thing keeping a team in the lead, such as when defending on last, where a large group of power classes are clustered around it. In these instances, the sentry is often located elsewhere as a last ditch defense and the teleporter isnt a factor. Its important to be aware that sometimes, that dispenser IS the thing keeping you from pushing, and taking it out at the perfect moment can completely disrupt the enemy team.

15:12 That's why i have a bind that says in team chat "SENTRY DOWN" , it's great when you see at least 1 teammate who had read chat and push to destroy all the remaining. Also , an additional strategy that can be really useful , is that if your team is really aggressive but can't do anything because of a weird placed sentry kept by a good engineer , you should know that the Enforcer is really powerful to destroy sapped sentry because it passes through the resistance given by the sapper , and the first hit deals a lot of damage. It can sometimes work to just focus so hard on the sentry that you destroy it faster than the engineer kills you.

This is overall a very good tutorial for Spy vs Engineer. Explains the mechanics and matchups that’s digestible for new players while being a refresher for older ones. I love how much effort you put into the graph design for this video too, it sells the feeling of the Hitman:James Bond analytical side of spy, which transitions into a mechanical gear motif for the engineer tool section. Amazing work all around for everyone involved in this project!

I am split 3 ways as a main between Spy, Engineer and Medic. I have learned that most techniques that help you as one will help with the other 2. Staying out of sight and mind until it is on your terms being the biggest one, but memorizing which flanking routes have hiding spots and blind corners is a close second. For spy it is obvious, for engineer it is because teleporters as well as battle engineer, and for medic it is because it gives you a potential out if things get hairy and your pocket dies as well as praying for that lucky saw crit when they turn at the wrong time.

I remember that once in 2fort, i built my sentry nest, i had my sentry at level 2 because i had fear to some airblast and hadn't the wrangler yet, then a spy camed and used the sapper on my sentry, turned my into an ice statue and just left, don't destroyes my dispenser or took the intelligence, i didn't killed him before, and i was like, "bro, what i did to you?" It's worth mentioning that the bolts of the rescue ranger has a distinctive hit sound that plays even on disguised/cloacked spies, sometimes it can give away that a Spy is around the area
