Barking is an ancient town even older than London and the place where William the Conqueror decided to stay whilst he was building the Tower of London. There is the medieval church which outlived the Abbey built in 666 and some people say that Halloween originated in Barking.
Joolz meet the leader of the council and gets shown around the town hall. Then he visits the Creekmouth Barrier and the new town development near the Ford factory and Barking Power Station. Batman was filmed here in the switch building for the old Power Station and there are many famous people who came from Barking.

I helped with a school trip a few years back. RWhites Lemoade was made in Barking - hence the lemonade building in Ripple Road, as were the lifejackets for the Titanic!

I moved from Barking in 1958 when I was 13 years old. It has changed tremendously since then but some places remain, like St Margaret's Church, where my parents were married, the Abbey remains with the Curfew Tower. Then down to the old Town Quay and the sluice gate with what we called 'the rushing waters'. There is a lot of history, much of which you gave and now a lot of development which promises much for the future. Excellent video (as always).

Now I am waiting for each new one to be posted. I find the combination of interesting info, humor and nice music (Tom Carradine, Lil Lost Lou!) very entertaining. Compliments to Joolz and friends! One of the best yet. Splendid work from Lil Lou too with the song about the Devil taking girls from the abbey, which started to make sense about 3/4 of the way through. Council guy doing a great job too. Elizabeth Fry: "Although Quakers do not have funeral services, over one thousand people attended her burial, which was held at North Street in Barking, Essex. The Meeting House, opposite the burial ground, is now in the 21st century a Sikh Temple, and the burial ground was purchased by Barking Council. Although Elizabeth Fry's remains are still buried at her original grave site, her headstone was moved to the Quaker Cemetery in Bush Road, Wanstead." Find-A-Grave

Fascinating. I'm from/live in Dagenham, my grandad worked at Fords throughout the war and my dad was involved in building the Barking barrier (along with other construction such as Canary Wharf, the Broadgate development, etc). I've subscribed and look forward to what you might reveal about Dagenham (PS the Dagenham Corridor is often overlooked when people talk about this area but well worth a visit (including the various pill boxes, tank traps and what remains of the Dagenham canal)).

What a lot of manpower and millions of workhours and sweat to construct all those buildings, wharves, canals, and trainlines..... and then manufacture all those goods.... on top of working in fishing boats; definitely not a pleasure cruise once one has to head out to the North Sea without modern weather maps and forecasts and radios.

Jeez Joolz, that was a good 'un. You received some great co-operation from the local artists, etc, in this video, but the Council Leader Darren Rodwell was exceptional. Obviously, a very proud local, and knowledgeable, and anxious to show off the future of Barking (and rightly so), but exceedingly generous with his time for you. What did he spend - 2 hours with you? He deserves some recognition for that - for the promotion of Barking - even if I just go and buy a pint in The Boathouse next time we're in London just because I saw your video. My Mum used to say "go for a Burton" when I fell over as a child in the 60s. I'd totally forgotten it until you brought it up. The rubbish chute idea is bonza. You mentioned the loss of life on the Princess Alice of about 700; the Titanic was, say, 1500, so 700 in an inland collision is mind-blowing. Love your work cobber. Cheers from Australia, mate.

Very interesting. I used to live in Barking myself, I got married there and my mates and I used to have a few beers in the town. I wasn't from the area but if I am honest I chose to move there as at the time it was cheap, I thought that then it had a few nice pubs, and it was well located for travelling about London. The history was an added bonus. However we departed as the area, which was never posh, began to get a bit too rough for both my wife and myself. However despite Barking being a bit flaky at the edges one has to admire the optimism of Darren Rodwell on the video. I recently had a walk along the Roding and the fly tipping and general neglect was heart breaking, there is something sad about someone defacing with tags those historical information boards for the sake of it. Let's hope that the improvements mentioned in the video will see Barking rise again. Thanks.

I've been anticipating a new Joolz Guide all week - as usual, Joolz did not disappoint - thank you good sir - dedicated followers of Sir Joolz will be amused to note that the KZbin algorithm has started recommending episodes of The Avengers at the end of the video - is this based on a search for bowler hats, or the family connection to the show, or both perhaps?
