You're tripping on serotonin from the day you're born but after a couple years it becomes familiar (reality). When you replace the serotonin with a psychedelic analog, the subjective experience changes to the unfamiliar, and you have to get used to existing all over again. Things that you thought mattered, don't matter; things that you thought were useful, aren't. Starting over from scratch is just too scary for some to handle, but for others it's a whole new lease on life. In other words, it's useful to see things a different way, if you can make use of it. If you aren't prepared to see things a new way, the psychedelic experience is at best utterly confusing and at worst, existential torture. That's why we have bad trips. The release of DMT at death is the last trip you get- if you are ready for it (death), you see your whole life in a new way, and if you aren't... your last moment is existential torture. Heaven and hell.

+Chimi Changa That works as a philosophical theory but it doesn't hold up to current neuroscientific findings, imo. The first brain study on LSD was done in 2016 and it shows, in part, support for your position. The subject's brain's showed heightened activity across areas that the typical adult brain would have long differentiated and compartmentalized. This allowed, for instance, their limbic system to interact more directly with their auditory and visual systems generating hallucinations that varied with emotions and thoughts. LSD made an adult brain more like a child's, in that, settled afferent pathways, developed during a child's critical period of development, were no longer promoting underlying bias and pre-conceived notions. Such that, a person could see the world with a childlike objectivity but, unlike a child, said objectivity is not based in ignorance but conscious intellectual thought. Your theory just doesn't account for the wide range of drugs that don't impact sensory perception yet impact serotonin. There's also A LOT more involved with sensory perception than serotonin alone. I'm open to debate that's just the understanding I've come to from a scientific perspective.

+Andrew Sav Hi Andy thanks for the challenge. I believe serotonin is central to the phenomenon of experience because of the roles it is evidenced to play in both learning/memory and emotion, as well as in sleep. These three happen to be very important attributes of the human experience, and of that of complex life on Earth, in general, which is why I attach so much significance to this neurotransmitter. Of course other chemicals, especially dopamine (but also including GABA, acetylcholine, and so on), are essential to the function of the brain, but something about substituted tryptamines is especially suggestive in the profound and meaningful experiences they generate. This as opposed to the delirium induced by GABAergic compounds like Agarin, another Dr. Peterson favorite, for example. Drugs that impact serotonin levels (such as SSRIs & MAOIs) do affect our subjective experience; why else would we use them? They don't cause "hallucinations" or "altered states of mind" because they do not change the structure of neurotransmitters available to the brain, only the quantity, bioavailability, and/or efficiency of familiar neurotransmitters, but nevertheless they do impact state-of-mind-as-such in that they regulate mood, etc. However, these same drugs also enhance the effects and potency of various psychedelic tryptamines, which further suggests to me that the body utilizes these analogous tryptamines via a similar mechanism as, and to serve a similar function to, serotonin (5-HT). Their sometimes subtle (DMT, Psilocin, Bufotenin) and sometimes not-so-subtle (LSD) differences in chemical structure result in a variably augmented performance in accomplishing the various computational tasks of serotonin, which manifests in the subjective experience as an "altered state of mind". Incidentally, LSD is also analogous to the neurotransmitter dopamine, in a manner similar to that of the psychedelic phenethylamines (Mescaline, MDMA, 2C-X)... although it is hitherto unique in that it is active to both dopaminergic and serotonergic receptors, qualitatively exhibiting augmented traits of both neurotransmitters when introduced to the brain. Dopamine is the chemical responsible for the experience of reward/motivation, motor control and addictive behavior--but despite LSD and the phenethylamines' similarity to dopamine, they are practically nonaddictive. I believe this proves my point. Similar to the case with SSRIs and serotonin, drugs like Nicotine, Cocaine, Heroin and Alcohol are addictive because they achieve something that activates the release of endogenous dopamine; LSD and the phenethylamines are nonaddictive because they replace dopamine and do not trigger that release, but meanwhile they augment the utility and function of dopamine receptors regarding the computational processes of the brain, which manifests itself as an altered state of mind. I suppose what I am getting at is this obvious truth: that there is no separation between sensation, subjective experience, and neurochemistry. Changing neurochemistry inevitably changes computation, thus perception, thus subjective experience. By studying these qualitative changes relative to what we know about the altered chemistry, we can arrive at conclusions about the function of our natural chemistry as well as hypotheses on the mechanisms behind cognition itself. I myself have arrived at these conclusions based on extensive... uh.... Research. Sorry if this was totally incomprehensible, but I can only explain it the way I understand it. Then again, that too is part of the human experience. I have a feeling that if we all used the same words, we would find we agree on more things than we disagree on. +Chimi Changa That was a lot more lucid than you were willing to give yourself credit for. Although I wouldn't say you're explaining a kaleidoscope to a blind man, I will say I have much less subjective psychedelic experience than yourself. I do, however, have every intention of expanding my mind with tryptamines in the future. Bufotenin is especially fascinating to me because it struggles to pass the BBB on it's own but it's derived in the brain as a metabolite of 5-Meo-DMT through O-demethylation. They're beautifully complementary in that Bufotenine and 5-Meo-DMT intensely agonize 5-HT 1a and 5-HT 2a receptors respectively to produce what I understand to be the most profound hallucinogenic experience ever discovered. Intravenous bufotenine injections have actually killed two people(idiots) despite its difficulty passing the BBB because they'd taken MAOIs with an inherently copious amount of bufotenine. There have been reported cases of serotonin sickness resulting in detailed visual and auditory hallucinations from prozac alone interestingly enough. I tried prozac for a week and I was a damn near idiot for a week. It dissociated me and robbed me of a clear mind. So, especially in that sense, serotonin can lead to "tripping on reality" but in an unproductive way. I suppose my disagreement borders more on the threshold dependency of its single use clinical efficacy. Micro-dosing aside, an individual must transcend their concept of self and "trip" for the drug to work in a medicinal or recreational sense. I don't interpret transcendent experience as ego death but rather a more objective deconstructive consciousness that bridges the gap between the subconscious/unconscious mind enhancing conceptual abstraction. Which implies to me, it's effects can only be tangibly definable through hard science in reference to theory and psychology. The mind and consciousness are as metaphysical now as they were a thousand years ago(although quantum theory has attempted to explain consciousness they're equally speculatory). Schizophrenics commonly have neologisms and tangental non-linear thought patterns. (Opinion incoming) Those symptoms are indicative of the same transcendent abstract correlative thinking seen in serotonergic hallucinogens, except with pathological excessiveness. That's why hallucinogens can cause early onset schizophrenia, they strengthen that person's genetically imprinted neuropathogenic pathways. Hallucinogens create an altered state of mind in the sense that they open a person up to the unconscious/subconscious underpinnings of consciousness itself. Regardless, I think we can both agree, the utilization therein is unforetold. In summary, I agree that neurochemistry, subjective experience, and your range of perceptions are all directly interrelated but I would add neurophysiology to that list considering the increasingly evident structural plasticity of the brain. As well as, conscious thought and anticipation, in that, conscious thought can strengthen neuronal pathways and anticipating food/sex releases dopamine while the anticipation of pain(especially on a randomized time schedule) causes a severe amplification of actual pain inflicted. (Kinda why torture is so damn effective.) P.S. I would be careful defining hallucinogens as non-addictive, as they have no physiological basis in addiction like heroin, meth, etc. they can still be psychologically addictive through positive association like weed. A technicality I like to predicate my arguments for legalization on so obstinate people have less to nitpick.

Unless you have experienced a trip, it is hard to explain because we use words that are only symbolic of our outer reality. Our inner experiences are left with stumbling blocks which it was hard to overcome in our explanations of what we were truly experiencing. When I was a young man I took, Mescaline, Peyote, acid, and psilocybin. They each had their own feel with some lasting much longer than others. On one Acid trip on two or three "window Pane" my friend and I experienced what it felt like to not be encumbered with human emotional confusion. We though, when we felt we had left our bodies, we had become God. BUT, upon returning to our bodies we had all of those encumbering emotions come flooding back in. I would love to try DMT even at my age of 72, because I recognize what those native shamans believed was our salvation in seeing outside of our physical nature.

opticalpie you need to research more. Dr. Peterson has a series on youtube dedicated to exploring different topics from the bible, for which he rented out a theatre. I did not choose biblical as a descriptor, rather as a categorization as this seems to have been clipped from one of those lectures. The stage, podium and powerpoint all look similar to what I've seen of those lectures, but it would be up to the person who posted this who posted this video or one of the people who has watched a fair amount of his content to tell me if I'm wrong. Not someone as unfamiliar with his work as you.

richard finlayson he's always all over the place because he's high in trait openness, so those of us who share that trait don't mind it. Maybe he did get some facts wrong, he may misremember some specifics but the gist of what Dr. Peterson is saying usually holds some validity. DMT is also so mysterious that it's hard to say we "know" anything about it at all, and there is so much to say about it that I don't think it's possible to discuss it without going all over, leaping from aspect to fact to speculation. In his class lectures though, he has mostly planned what he will talk about and I would recommend his maps of meaning class if you want to see him at his best.

As a young boy I feared death immensely after I first learned of it. Couldn't accept it. Later on after I had a few trips with good friends I realized that I do die but the effects I have in my lifetime will echo through all the places I have been long after I am dead. Motorcycles repaired by me for people to enjoy with family and friends. Homes I built to keep people dry and warm and nurture their families in. To speak of the good effects. Do we unintentionally live vicariously through one another? We tell stories to teach. So ones embellished story can teach another and effect their lives. unfortunately the story can always be misinterpreted. It's chaos and it works is what's mental. There's something holding it all together though right!? Anyway havent had a trip for a while. I encourage you to try it. But look at yourself and ask why you want to in the first place.

Truth Hurts _ Interesting. My experience with LSD affected my cognitive function in a way that I cannot properly articulate. While in the midst of the trip - it was like I'd get trapped in all of these thought loops. Some were pleasant. Others gave me anxiety. I had a horrible time interacting with others around me. Every interaction felt so intense. I also would become overwhelmed by the energy that some people were naturally giving off. It was like I could look into their eyes and see their "soul". I knew what kind of person they were before I even spoke to them. This changed the way I look at people forever. I could spot how insecure someone is in a nano-second. I could spot if someone had gone through trauma in their lives... etc... Some of this stayed with me. It's not as precise as it was during my trip, but it's there. My brain just changed. I feel like I'm in a constant state of deep thought. I'm always breaking something down in my head. I get lost in my own head. I am constantly searching for something just to ponder. I get a hold of a concept and I can't let it go. This has amazing benefits in critical thinking and logic. You give me a subject and I can immediately cut to the core of it. However, for on the spot thinking in social situations - it leaves people sometimes thinking that I am awkward or unsure of myself. I don't retain information as well on the spot, because I am always preoccupied. It leads to a lot of "overthinking". I'm naturally an "extroverted" person. However, this has left me with a lot of "introverted" tendencies. Juggling it is hard to explain. Sometimes the old "me" is still there. Sometimes I feel like it was a different life. It's been a blessing and a curse. Maybe I can find a way to fully make it a benefit. This is why I say "it has changed me... but I don't know if it is in a good way or not".

All I can say to anyone who is serious about exploring the questions posed here is: read Rudolf Steiner. Steiner was a clairvoyant who endeavored to make a scientific exploration of psychic/mystical experiences, basically trying to put a name to things experienced by shamans, and gurus (among others) and make them accessible to the Western rational mind. I'd recommend starting with Theosophy, then try to tackle Esoteric Science. Not easy reading but worth the effort in my opinion. I can attest to the 1 year permanent personality change. I'm a completely different person, Ive learned so much more this year about myself than any other year in my life... Sorry for the bad English, not my first language. While I was high I was thinking about counciesness. I probably score low in Conscientiousness and high in neuroticism. I started to realize that these high amount of bad feelings that comes along high neuroticism could be due a low perception of yourself, like not Perceveing your body as good as a high Conscientiousness person would perceive, focusing your perception too much on the outside, and not exactly knowing what is happening to yourself, and to world as well, giving you confused perception of "reality, different that a high Conscientiousness person, that can understand what is actually happening, and not being confused about it. For example, a high Conscientiousness person would know what would be the probably effect a action he did would have, different from a low Conscientiousness person that would not predict the most accurate outcome of the same action, leaving him confused about what is happening.

Other than our basic self consciousness which gives us our sense of identity the other consciousnesses we create through our own actions or deeds. Drugs create different consciousness than our good deeds in life e.g. helping others. So essentially it is our choice which one we wish to have over and above the default consciouness. Another, in my opinion, brilliant lecture that some might use to confirm your political incorrectness in a society that bans and condemns any type of experience induced by what could commonly be referred to as drugs. Just one point of interest, particularly on plant based drugs that occurred more to me listening to this was the idea that our notion of spirituality may originally have been derived by these plant experiences over the millennia of our history. At about the same age he noted, I had a pretty powerful hallucination on nothing more than Marijuana, that took me into a dream of unimaginable nuclear devastation, like he had experienced. Outside of the intense hallucination, I had an overwhelming sense of regret. At a moment in time, I realized the preciousness and beauty of life but how I had taken it for granted and lived it all wrong, while the world around me was completely destroyed. I've taken psychs a number of times (shrooms and LSD) and while I think they should be legal, I strongly disagree with giving them the same status as cannabis/alcohol. (Hell, if you ask me, the kinds of edibles and the strength of the shit you can get in the legal cannabis market is going a little overboard. Especially if we're talking about high-THC/low-CBD stuff, which can be much scarier that psychs in my experience). Most people, I would think, are simply not ready to handle the kinds of experiences these substances can give you. If they were legalized, I would much prefer to see them legalized in a much more restrictive way. You should be required to take some sort of mental background test and have a trained psychologist/"trip sitter" administer them to you in a controlled clinical setting so as to minimize the risk of adverse effects on mental wellbeing. Of course, there will never be anything that can be done to stop people from getting their hands on these things outside of such settings. Mushrooms are just a fungus, after all, and anyone can theoretically grow their own. And obviously prohibition hasn't stopped myself and others from experimenting with them. But, for most people, I would think that a much more controlled set/setting would be extremely beneficial.

He isn't talking so much about the Catholic/Christian interpretation of God, rather the aspect of religious beliefs of a higher entity. Of course a lot of people's aspect of God is the religious interpretations we know today as Allah, God and their subjects, but it also includes the unique entities people come up with as coping mechanisms. "Guardian angels" are a great example of people holding onto some form of religious belief that someone, or something, is watching over them and therefore must show appraisal towards that entity.

Yes, I think it is obvious that he is speculating on things that he has read but he needs to broaden his literature. The best places to really get to grips with these exeriences is to read from people who have studied the psychology as well as actually experienced the mystic. ... without drugs. It is just that his demeanor is like a tightly coiled ratchet and he really needs to find some inner peace. There's ample reason to believe that intelligent forces operate things like the Laws of Physics and Probability, and they won't be testable by material science.
