Over the last few weeks, we have put together a series entitled "Meaning, Awe and the Conceptualization of God" for the Dr Jordan B Peterson Podcast. This series was built around investigating the various methods and practices that humans use to conceptualize God. This investigation leads us down the path of exploring meaning and awe. Why are we struck by awe when viewing a beautiful painting? Why does walking inside the door of a great Cathedral take our breath away? What is the relationship between these experiences and God?
This compilation includes all 3 parts, as can be found separately wherever you listen to your audio podcasts!
Featured in this compilation:
@Jonathan Pageau
@John Vervaeke
@Bishop Robert Barron
Stephen Blackwood
Roland Griffiths
Iain McGilchrist
Stephen Fry
Randall Wallace
@Word on Fire Institute (Christopher Kaczor and Matthew Petrusek)
This series was released in three parts on all audio platforms. The series was popular enough for us to make a video version of the series, and we decided to put them all together in one video.

John 1, KJV - 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Pretty much the same way Catholics define Love. Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to love God and to love your neighbour as you love yourself. God is the highest value, so the best there can be. So when you want to see God within you, you love yourself, and when you love your neighbour as yourself, you want to see in them what you want to see in yourself which is God. In Short to love is to want to see God, and God is Love by definition.

Dr. Peterson, my wife and I listened to, I guess, scores of hours of your lectures over a couple of years. We were profoundly impacted. We loved your series on the stories of Genesis. We thought it ironic when realizing our faith being strengthened and reinforced by the insights and fervor for truth emanating like a fire from a prophet, from a man who cannot yet bring himself to confess a belief in God. A few months ago, I lost the love of my life to a battle with cancer. After marrying at age 20 and being together for a few days beyond 42 years, we were like laminated wood that cannot be separated without a lot of ripping and tearing. The agony of it might possibly be characterized as M.Scott Peck defined “aloneness”, as compared to loneliness. The ideas of the nihilists baffle me now more than ever. Christ is the basis and characteristic expression of Universal Truth. I see you as a man ‘contending for the faith’, as mentioned by the apostle Paul of the New Testament. I pray that you are surprised by joy.

Beautiful dude. So sorry for your loss, but happy for you as well. Your grief cries out from the depths that joy and love have carved into your soul. You are indeed a fortunate man to have experienced such a love. I lost my mum in 2015, but she's a part of me and I speak to that part most days. Our relationship hasn't ended, just changed. If anything, it has improved since she died (we were chalk and cheese when she was alive, but still loved each other deeply). Your wife must be so much a part of you that you feel like half a person now. This is an illusion. That part is still there and still growing. It's a huge adjustment to manage your physical life without her, having to take over all the things you outsourced to her over the years, but that's just stuff. The true treasure is how she transformed your soul, and you can never lose that. I hope this helps and I'm not just being a patronizing wanker. You do have a few decades of life experience on me, so I'm sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs. As for Jordan confessing God, he has, but not in so many words. He has said that the "God" he believes in is too big and profound to be constrained or defined by that word which carries with it so much baggage. To me, this says he "gets it" more than most religious people do. God bless you and keep you on the difficult road ahead.

I sometimes wonder about the mysticism associated with Christ's sacrifice of his life on the cross, if you told me tomorrow I would have to be tortured, ridiculed and endure a long slow and painful death in order to bring salvation to all of humanity.... I would do it with a smile on my face. I often struggle with the "ours is the only way to eternal life" but simultaneously can feel and am a living testimony of God and the Holy spirit..... I often end up in a place of knowing nothing other than I know and feel God and the conviction granted in me to be a decent person, I've done horrible truly evil things over my lifetime, often still have evil thoughts, but with the conviction of the Holy spirit and free from chemical influences, I'm the closest to "flourishing" I have ever been in 36 years on this planet.

1) The Infinite Regression Fallacy proves that there is something that is Eternal and exists outside the flow of time. In Western Tradition we think of this entity as the Creator. Most people realize that you cannot have a series of causal events that go to infinity, by definition, since there is no last moment of time going forward. The series never ends. The Fallacy is the observation that one also cannot have an infinite chain of causal events going back over an infinite period of time, because there is no first moment. The series never starts. 2) From science we know that there is an inverse relationship between the flow of time and size. This was illustrated in the movie 'Interstellar' in which time slowed down as the characters got closer to a massive black hole. The closer in you are and the larger the black hole, the slower time flowed. An infinite mass results if the flow of time is zero. So an eternal entity that exists outside the flow of time, by definition has ZERO time flow and so it inversely has infinite mass. 3) Infinite mass = infinite power since mass and power are different forms of the same thing. And a truly infinite entity must have all positive qualities, as Cantors concept of a Continuum shows us, and 4) that this Creative entity has intelligence and is a Creator. The laws of Science prove that this Creator is intelligent and has personality.

@@tinfoilhatter Again, i understand the sentiment - the issue is that the term 'Saint' is actually a technical term which only the Catholic Church has the authority to bestow upon someone. So a saint isn't someone who simply 'lived a good life' - but someone who actually meets the criteria as defined by the Church. In simple terms, a 'saint' is someone who the Church believes is in heaven. So the Church actively looks for signs to confirm that is true. More specifically, there's a 5 year waiting period before one can be considered for sainthood (gives us time to analyse hidden secrets etc). Then evidence is gathered on their life, writings, teachings, personal holiness - which might include browsing through personal diaries or internet history these days, or there could be interviews with those who knew them, lived with them, their local church members, priests, family, friends, work colleagues etc. If everything checks out, then the church begins to look for miracles which can be attributed to that person (as a sign of their access to supernatural powers & grace in heaven - this is also an extensive & technical process). You need at least two confirmed miracles - that means 'supernatural events that can't be explained by natural causes like science'. For example, someone terminally ill with cancer having a few weeks to live suddenly having it all disappear completely after praying for that person's intercession - at least two doctors have to prove that there is no medical explanation for it to be considered a miracle. This whole process can take hundreds or even thousands of years before someone can be officially recognised as a 'saint'.

“Love is the goal and truth is it’s servant.” I love that. It smoothly coincides with his suggestions about always telling truth in relationships and how it helps to resolve difficulties. Truth really does serve love. People lie and accept lies on the faulty premise that they are doing it to preserve a relationship or avoiding harm. But that always leads to more trouble later, it leads to interacting with false ideas of each other instead of with each other. It eliminates intimacy (into me see) because you’re always interacting with a fantasy or a charrade. True love requires truth, if you can’t be honest you can’t even love each other because what you are seeing and interacting with is a kind of puppet.

Truth is what is true regardless of anyone's perspective. Truth is dividing because anything that isn't true is a lie. An army of lies will be defeated by a singular truth. If Truth is mocked at, if Truth sounds like a lie, it will still be true regardless! The essence of our Universe is based on this thing called Truth, and it existed long before humanity tried to redefine it to fit their own agenda.

I am so thankful that Jordan Peterson exists. Rarely have I ever heard another living human seek TRUTH or the idea of it so passionately and so earnestly. There is a purity in his intellectual pursuit that transcends ego, identity, and political/religious/cultural affiliation. It's just honestly a beautiful thing to experience and it inspires me to be more vulnerable and egoless in my pursuit of knowledge.

@@WoodenWizard Peterson goes beyond regular self-help authors, not only by bringing several decades of professional clinical therapy to his advice, but also re-visiting religion (see his psychological analysis of the bible, for example). In brief, he was driven by the insane group-perpetuated evil of the 20th century to Jung and religious questions. His book Maps of Meaning essentially argues that religion and religious history describe and embody the emergence of a meta-real "generalized other" (aka God--I also recommend you look up that sociological term), through a Darwinian process, which represents the ideal human being (also God--culminating in Christ's sacrifice). He takes several tracks such as neuropsychology, literary analysis, developmental psychology, ethnology, and anthropology to make the point. And yes, you could say that it's Joseph Campbell with teeth. Those two things plus his genuine searching after truth (although he did and does get *very* reactive in political debates still, unfortunately) is what has drawn people to him.

@@WoodenWizard I think there was a misunderstanding between us. My post about his work was about what differentiated him from other self-help authors in terms of how he's helped people improve their lives and become better versions of themselves (it's also worth noting here that his biblical and college lectures are absent of his reactive politics and are quite popular in their own right). Concerning his fame, however, it does absolutely appear that the driving force of his internet virality is his reactionary nature (his subreddit demonstrates this quite clearly, I believe); we're in closer agreement here then it may have first seemed (and, to be absolutely clear, I think his reactivity has been an extremely serious problem). I don't expect you to take my word for it, but when Peterson is talking about "cultural Marxism" I have never detected any hints of anti-semetism or such far right ideology. He genuinely believes in the existence of a cohort of university professors bent on the destruction of "the West", fueled by resentment. Concerning the historical use of the phrase he seems completely ignorant (and I am as well), and it does seem reasonable to hold him responsible for that, assuming you're correct. I do agree though that it's a very weak narrative overall and lacking in insight. Lastly, I detest one-upping status games, and in that spirit I would just encourage you to reflect on your post to see if you have fallen in to the reactiveness you see in the world. Thanks for taking the time to have this conversation!
@davidmurray6429
@davidmurray6429 2 жыл бұрын
@@WoodenWizard "I detest one-upmanship" was definitely poorly worded. I wasn't talking about you at all (although it is a struggle within all of us), but rather trying to say that "when I ask you to reflect on your post, I want to be very clear that I don't want to 'defeat' you." As far as I know Peterson got the phrase "cultural marxism" from Stephen Hicks' "Explaining Postmodernism" (I need to be fact checked on that though). That book also seems to have been his main source of knowledge of postmodernism, which, as you well know, has been problematic, to say the least. As far as I can tell, instead of understanding their writings better, he skipped right to what he believed their intentions were--cue "cultural Marxism". Peterson does in fact have a strong echo chamber in his fan base (as with many other fan bases, which is not to condone it, but to show that I'm being fair about it). Part of the reason is the typical one: people defending sources of meaning they've invested energy into. But, having been in this space, it does seem more than that. It's important to understand that Peterson really does want people at large to do better in life (now, I'm not qualifying that language because from everything I've seen over the years, that's what his life's work points to. I recommend the video "If You Hate Jordan Peterson. . ."). But again, as we've already discussed, I believe it's true at the same time that he has systematically been collapsing into himself in the political domain, which has caused some real vitriol among commentors, as you have experienced firsthand. (But, by the same token, Peterson has recognized this flaw in himself! **Watch his short video "A Wing and a Prayer" and you will be very surprised, I think**.) Peterson says with *absolute conviction* that life can be worth living despite its tremendous suffering, and you can become more than you are now to make that happen. When you criticize him, you are, from his followers' perspectives, deconstructing the authority which assures them of life's meaning. Given how important that belief is to flourishing, I think it's more than understandable why they'd be defensive of that. But again, understanding isn't agreement, it's forming a bridge for people to walk over. That's all to say that I simply cannot reconcile the belief that Peterson and all his followers are fundamentally corrupt with the evidence at hand; they are only making fundamental mistakes (that sounds contradictory, but I hope you can see my meaning). I have an honest question to go along with this. Isn't it the case that Peterson's side view themselves as counter reactionaries calling out the reactionary postmodern neomarxists (or the radical left)? If so, I genuinely struggle to see how your counter reactionary position helps him and his followers see their mistakes, for you would be, to them, the og reactionary to their counter-reaction. It's a real dilemma, and I am interested to hear your thoughts on the matter! (I've been this editing comment a lot. Sorry if that has caused any confusion.)

I am not what would be classically religious, but I have always believed that there is something greater. At this point and for a very long time what many get from going to church I get from being in the woods. I have felt comfortable there assuring myself that if there is a greater being or power it is everywhere, and I should feel no shame in finding it in the woods in the absence of other humans.
