A public intellectual should get immunity from criticism? Are you looking for someone to worship or to learn from? Peterson should be critically engaged by his intellectual contemporaries, not celebrated. One does a teacher a disservice by parroting their ideas and fawning over them. He desperately wants to be an inspirational speaker, but his shrill admonition to "take responsibility" sounds like the advice any good parent gives. He should stick with clinical psychology lectures.

The reason his speeches resonate with so many people is the fact that these things are truths that are deep within us. We know these things. Deep down inside us. He's brings out that truth in u and it makes sense. He didn't invent this. He just studied our past. Great literature that most people are too lazy to do. He connected the dots for u. We need more thinkers like this. There is only 1 truth.

If Jesus was a real person who existed and did all these things JP is advocating, then how can we not recognize that the divine life was lived, was present and recorded among man? JP would not have the LOGOS without the NT writings. Truth that transcends time, but captured in time.

Jason Marcel It's more like individuals (regardless of race or gender) are realising that the feeling of being oppressed can come from within. Changing yourself is the best way to liberate yourself from that feeling, blaming others (or society) is the wrong approach. We live in a time and place that allows almost all individuals to better their economic or social condition simply by working hard on themselves. You can continue to try and turn this into a tribal identity movement, but that's not what it is and you aren't helping anyone (including yourself) by trying to convince people that that's what this is.

When you gain some understanding of what it means to transcend your suffering and improve your life, the passion for the goal of meaning has extraordinary power. If you find that passion, I think it's very hard not to get emotional when discussing it. I think the emotion comes from the knowledge that the realisation that you are fully capable, along with everyone else, to fulfil your potential holds immense power over your actions isn't realised by so many people. Once you can bear your doubts, fears and anxieties and can see past them i.e. transcend them, you will know the terrible differences between the heroic path and the path of suffering and malevolence. This, combined with the fact that it just takes a few of the right words to provoke the self-reflection that helps people discover their best path and improve the lives of them as individuals and to society as a whole, brings you to the agonising awareness that there is a monstrous amount of completely unnecessary suffering all around that causes so much pain.

@the-chillian7 жыл бұрын
But as he points out, he's saying nothing new. His message is the oldest one we have. Nor is it solely in the West: Buddhism will also tell you that life is suffering, and provides the Eighfold Path of right thinking and behavior to overcome it for yourself and others. This is one reason he pushes the old religious forms that also teach the same thing, and this is what they offer of value even when their myths are not literally true, their God doesn't exist, and their followers have been atrocious. I happen not to agree with him on religion and I don't know that I have a good alternative answer, but I think his aim is correct.

Dr. Peterson arrived in a time when we needed someone with both credentials and conviction to say "The Emperor Has no clothes." He stood firm and told everyone that would listen that he would not be forced by shame, or by threats or by rule of law to say words not his own. That was our first gift. The second gift flowed from the first. Dr. Peterson showed us that life is suffering and it is how we face it, on a daily basis, that can mean the difference between joy and despair. He says "Pick up the heaviest weight and carry it." Decide in the morning to do something good, make your life and someone else's life better. It sounds like amazing words only because the west has been dragged down the road of nihilistic introspection for so long. It is like awaking from a dark troubled sleep to see a ray of light through a window.

So many people are intent on adding to the suffering of life by making things worse. Peterson shows us a better way

This is breathtaking. If a person never watches anything else by Jordan Peterson, this is the one to watch.

After following Jordan Peterson's meat and green veggies diet and almost removing depression I started removing things that were weighing me down like my girlfriend and band. It's amazing when you're out of depression you realize what you previously perceived as love might actually be depression. I was surrounded by a bunch of "professional victims" as Peterson put it and I tried to love these people sacrificing time money energy that in the end nobody cared for and could never be taken back. I'm gonna be dead one day and have almost died in multiple occasions last year but nobody cares coz I'm still alive. I also read his 12 Rules To Life approximately 2 months before. I'm dedicating myself to the guitar and music and paying that 10,000 hour rule. It might take time for me to succeed and there's always the chance I'll never succeed but fuck it. I can't think of anything better to do than what my future self is calling me to do. The circumambulation of the self as Jung calls it. I'm also more excited about meeting this person I'm meant to become and manifest than meeting girls. God bless!

"I can't think of anything better to do than what my future self is calling me to do." Look around. See where you can help out in your local community. I promise you'll find something better to do. And it'll be more rewarding too.

chastemodest I get the beginning of this, misery loves company as they say. Now I encourage my old friends when they try to better themselves, as they aren’t bad people that tried to drag me down, we were just all painfully depressed together.

How are you doing dude? Would be great to hear some of your music if you're still pursuing it.

Millennials are born between 1980-1995. Just saying, since everyone always thinks that millennials are teenagers or something.

I love his sigh of exasperation toward the end. A lot of his critics complain that he is explaining simple ideas that everyone knows. Perhaps we need a regular reminding.

i am a woman, Maybe it takes two of me, perhaps only one, being human is really what I am. Anyway, I have great admiration for you Jordan Peterson. You give me hope with your honesty and integrity. Thank-you.
