I respect Jordan soo much, he doesn't just cram his ideas down your throat, he asks his guest what they think of his ideas and listens. Something extremely rare to see people do.

Hes a psychologist
@b3hemoth4483 жыл бұрын
@@mindgames9614 that is a rather simple deduction. I wouldn't say him being a psychologists made him that way. In fact I would wager most psychologists don't have the interest to see people pick apart their own ideas and would rather sit as judge not be the one being judged. I think his ability to do that makes him a good psychologists, but simply being a psychologists doesn't grant you those characteristics.

@chysen3 жыл бұрын
@@b3hemoth448 what you just described are how good psychologists practice, and that's probably why @mindgames said "He's a psychologist." JP himself described it in the episode. Its not his job to shape his clients ideals, he listens, and let's the client have those realizations on their own, then when that gets brought out, they develop strategies to make those ideals a reality. Psychologists/therapists don't sit and judge, they listen. How mainstream media/movies portray these titles are far from how they practice in real life, which sucks because it negatively shapes how people view the practice.
@b3hemoth4483 жыл бұрын
@@chysen right but here's my point his profession isn't what made him that way. Case being that just because someone holds a title of psychologists doesn't mean they act in a similar manner in fact some act as pill pushers and only listen for symptoms of a disorder so they can write a prescription and worse some are ideologs that push people who are confused by their identity to pursue transition therapy. Saw an interview with a person who went through that exact scenario in California where the psychologists insisted they were transgender and they went through transition. That person later found out they just had an eating disorder and once they resolved that they regretted the transition and is trying to reverse it. So to some my rant off, a profession doesn't define a person and accepting a generalization that spans across a profession is dangerous. It can lead to a false sense of trust in person simply because they hold a title. That is why Jordan Peterson being a psychologists isn't relevant and has everything to do with who he is, not what he is, that makes him respectable.

I was actually suicidal, suffering from psychosis, and in my recovery I listened to alot of Jordan Peterson. I gave myself time to learn, and what I learned from JP helped me recover, reorient my brain, and kept me from taking my life.

“It’s hard to adjust your attitude about hunger when you’re starving to death.”
@jasonstraight13203 жыл бұрын
Not to the same extent, but I’d argue about the same when you have every food you’d ever want and then some within a few screen-taps on your phone. That’s what I’ve been struggling with: overeating and general gluttony. Food addiction, while on the surface a stupid first-world problem, is very real and hard to let go of.
@Humanaut.3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonstraight1320 For sure. Material contentment does not equate to a lack of suffering, which is a naive belief in the west. But there are a lot of people who have access to the same things(food via tech) who don't struggle with it. So what I mean is: the outer circumstance meets your personal predisposition. Many people struggle with many different things. What is easy for one might be hard for another and vice versa. In the sense example of hunger it is different though: Every human being reacts the same way to (severe) hunger (in the context of chronic lack of food): not very well. Addiction in general is a whole other topic than not having the bottom of maslow's hierarchy of needs met. Your needs may be higher up on the pyramid, allthough they may not be met. Dr.Gabor Mate gives a lot of interesting talks on addiction. I also believe that what kind of addiction it is is secondary, although some may be much more destructive than others, but the root of it is pretty similar.

@@Humanaut. I think there is a connection if not several. One who's basic needs aren't met easily each day,I would imagine could be at higher risk for addiction than others. Also just all companies that produce consumer goods have done, the food is no exception. Social scientists study ways to market things based on how it hijacks our limbic system and keeps us engaged. Our bodies reward system though has evolved to reward us greater for certain needs being met. The fast food industry knows this better than anyone. We get higher rewards for consuming high sugar and salt and foods with a high fat content because in the past these were not easy finds and would have sustained us longer against hunger. The menus at fast food establishments is nothing but these foods that trigger our dopamine reward system while giving no real nutritional value basically making it possible to both be obese and starving at the same time.We are almost all battling addiction though most are not even aware of it. The substance abuse addictions are most often caused by unresolved trauma that often lead to depression therefore the dopamine boost from a substance like cocaine provides the feeling they were lacking for so long. Hows the saying go the most loyal slaves are those that believe they are free?
