A couple of years ago, I heard of a concept called "optimistic nihilism." In layman's terms, it means life is meaningless, and humanity's existence serves no greater purpose, so you might as well spend your life enjoying it and making the world a better place for others. That's basically how I operate.

Well, there's still an ideology in there somewhere, isn't there? If you want to make the world a better place, that means that there is some target to work towards. So the question moves away from an existential problem to a social problem. What does the world look like that you want to leave behind? That's driven by ideology.

@@freedomofspeech2867 Well first off I've actually been defending Jordan in this comment section. Secondly, saying that my behaviour is 'so fucking white' (ignoring the two prior replies my comment was imitating) is an example of a prejudice against a race, and therefore textbook racism. Thirdly, objectivity is a concept entirely generated within the human mind. Your entire perception of the world is subjective, which is why the primary crux of all philosophy is 'I think therefore I am'. At the base of all assumptions is the belief in the self. Besides from that, I do actually like a lot of what Jordan says, and the majority of criticism against him I've seen has been fairly nitpicky or not even criticism against him, but against an individual's perception of his ideas. He's not a perfect man by any standards. Both the Bible and the literal definition of the word define the impossibility of perfection. He has also said things that I disagree with, however I still believe he is a good man, and a pretty great clinical psychologist. Try not to approach arguments with the standpoint of insulting your opponent. Jordan himself says that if you insult everyone who disagrees with you, you can't accept anyone to change their mind.

Good for you dude. It is normal to have agreements and disagreements. Dr. P is an amazing orator, and a sharp thinker, albeit with his own flaws. He is often incorrect, but his orator skills can make you think (and convince you) otherwise. This is particularly the case for fields/subjects on which the listener doesn't know much. I remember I got into Dr. P years ago, during bill C16 heyday and before the intellectual dark-web garbage. I was listening to a lot of his lectures and nodding my head. Then, when he started talking confidently about environmental issues, claiming "he read everything he could get his hands on", I just heard him failing miserably to understand the issue. The thing is, I am also well-read on ecology/environment (just wrapping up my PhD in env.sci), and I could see clearly the bullshit, while for the issues for which I was a n00b, he could convince me that cranes walk and penguins fly. I am grateful to Dr. P and his bulls****g skills, since he made me into a better person. I actively tried to understand how people communicate since, and how to read between the lines and words they say. There is a lot of good takeaways you can get from Dr. P, however I was lucky enough to stop paying attention around the time when he got into lobsters, steaks, hanging out with Ben Shapiro, and essentially became a stepping-stone for western-nationalists (It's a whole different can of worms). There is much more wisdom and beauty to be found around beyond Dr. P, so go clean your room, and go read a book, contemplate your houseplants (or better yet, outside nature), and go tell your loved ones you cherish them.

@Pspet3 жыл бұрын
Don't regard everything Oliver says as correct, and don't regard everything Peterson says as correct. Oliver actually misunderstands some of Peterson's points Two examples: At 14:30 the argument is flawed. Oliver claims that the uniform of the police can be a symbol of chaos for many people, and although this is certainly true, his use of the word chaos has little to do with Peterson's use. 15 seconds before, he literally read his definitions of the abstract symbolisms of chaos and order, and it says that extreme order can become tyranny. That's what the uniform of the police can be, not chaos, especially not if you take into consideration Peterson's symbolic use of the word chaos. Also about the conflicting terms of post-mordenism and Marxism that Oliver says he uses interchangeably, this is not really the case. Firstly he never says Marxism, but neo-Marxism. He also says too that they are fundamentally contradicting terms. The communist manifesto and Marxism described history as a constant oppression from the economically powerful to the economically weak and he argues that people weren't buying that idea anymore from a point onwards, so the story changed to oppression of one identity group to another, in general. He basically hates the "identity politics" that "these people" play, and their focus on group identity over personal identity, which as far as I am concerned, is a very very valid point.
@ilikehoodies16583 жыл бұрын
@@Pspet but I’m just wondering what he means by personal identity? When he is implying that order is tribe, religion, health, home, and country, I’m assuming that he is supporting order although it can be tyranny. But most of the things he said that are “order” can be seen as group identities, as the very nature of home, tribe, religion, and country is just very collective. Isn’t he contradicting himself?
@Johnny.Fedora3 жыл бұрын
@@Pspet, Peterson's fundamental problem is that his public persona is that of the self-important pseudo-intellectual prick, but he uses terms in an ambiguous, self-serving and *hypocritical* way. So, it's automatically worthy of hate if you use a term that is a de facto or de jure term imposed by society? A small number of people own the vast majority of human society's wealth. Is it bad to cite that group, that plutocracy, as a group, or is that bad form, and we really ought not make Peterson mad? He classifies while railing at the idea of classification. I'm no Marxist, but I have a basic grasp of the concept. Peterson seems not to, regardless of his bullshit "neo-marxism" term. I don't know whether he really doesn't, or he just says what he thinks is coherent with his overarching philosophies, or if he just serves up what he thinks will sell, or whether after so many years, he's come to believe his own nonsense. And he doesn't seem to have the slightest clue what "post-modernism" is. Does he have the slightest idea how badly he misunderstands? Does it even matter in the internet age? Ker-ching, man. Ker-ching. After listening to a number of Peterson's lectures, I don't feel the least bit edified -- at least, not from the lectures. This guy is a waste of time. You'd be far better served reading Nietzsche. Or a Timothy Snider book. Or even Toynbee. Or petting a cat.

@@Pspet Well, the first argument may sound flawed because he of the example. But because you haven't mentioned, I am led to believe that you think that he is correct about "Walls of the City". The argument holds up enough. Like he said, even Jordan Peterson has said that we see things in a subjective sense so two people can see the same things differently. So Order and Chaos, whether we like it or not, are relative.

@Anti Cucho I think most people do not look for good things from KZbin comments. The content is not like Olly's older videos, and I would not be surprised if those had a high proportion of comments "debating" the philosophy compared to this video having less of that and more talking about the acting and lighting and snakes and body hair. But look to ContraPoints for some nods at a rationale for intentionally causing this. From Olly's perspective, a video that is 95% philosophy monologue, 5% good film might not be as worthwhile as a video that entices people's aesthetic/sexual attentions and has a lot of researched philosophy in there as well. They accomplish different things and different people will watch them. Ultimately, this type of video is getting more popular, and I think that's a good thing because the other style of video, the more boring, less distracting exposition of philosophy is still not a dying breed and we can always go back to older ones of those; they don't get outdated very quickly. Engaging people's emotions and humor is intentional here, and it's okay not to like it.

@@iannichols3125 I do this, but not to try to change people (you can't really change others, just yourself). No amount of logic or argument will change an entrenched belief-in fact, good arguments make them dig their heels in harder-but you can introduce new ideas using their terminology. This gives them a way to wrap their head around the concept and makes it feel less like something "outside" or "other" and more like an extension of what they understand already. I know how vulnerable displaying your body can be. I want to say that I think you're attractive. Also I loved this one. I'm going to watch it 5 more times. I usually watch multiple times to really feel I grasp the concepts.

This is so perfect and what I’ve been trying to tell my wife for ages about Peterson’s philosophy. You are not the only true fan. He is right about so much but comes to the wrong conclusions. Love the channel BTW. I’ve been binging for a couple days now.

By the way, thank you for putting effort into your subtitles. It really makes a difference. I'm not deaf, but I am hard of hearing, so I use subtitles for most stuff with words spoken aloud. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to be completely deaf.

It took me FOREVER to figure out where that laugh (0:58-1:03) came from. I *knew* I had heard it, but I couldn't place it. I finally figured out that it is the same laugh used at the end of the music video for Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Because I've heard it before but couldn't place where, it was simultaneously familiar and creepy. Good choice! And great video, overall, too!
