I'm 34 and have done nothing with my life even though I have been given the gift of sufficient IQ. I just got an official test done for other reasons and it came back 122. I'm fairly certain my complete lack of exercise and terrible diet and depression have lowered it. When I was young I was consistently at the 98th to 99th percentile in standardized tests and almost always the most intelligent kid in the class. I can see that I'm plummeting towards a life that will have been nothing but mediocrity and in a decade I'll probably be at 112 IQ and the trend will continue. I basically threw my life away. I needed Jordan Peterson 15 years ago.
@jameslyons6655
@jameslyons6655 2 жыл бұрын
34 is still young. Don’t worry about what you haven’t done, we can’t drive forward looking in the rear view mirror. Set a few reasonably attainable short term goals (getting to the gym four times this week, saving $500, getting to bed before 11pm regularly, reducing screen time five hours each week, reading a book a week for the next month). If you can do that for 90 days you will have developed a habit of setting and meeting goals. It’s an invaluable skill. Then start setting your sights on some harder mid term goals (running a half marathon, getting a story published, getting a blue belt in jiujitsu) once you are crushing those start your long term goals, they should scare you a little. One more thing. Do not wait for or rely on motivation. It’s bullshit. Motivation is a temporary emotional reaction to an outside stimulus, there’s no way you can do everything you need to do on a regular basis by being motivated. Discipline is everything. Start to think and act like a disciplined person and your world will change.
@philj9594
@philj9594 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameslyons6655 Ty for taking the time to write that James. I needed that. I'm currently learning how to code and you're right. I'm not necessarily motivated every day but it feels really good to make progress even if I didn't feel like.

At 34? You have enough time to do well. It's when you are pushing towards 50 and past it is where the real regrets come into effect most of the time. Even if you feel like you wasted time or acknowledge that you could have done more? That kind of thought is much better to bring out into the light rather than continuing with the same handcuffs until it is too little and too late to break them
@Uzodesign
@Uzodesign 2 жыл бұрын
@@jameslyons6655 I've been looking for an answer to this question, "How does one get discipline"? Can one have discipline across board or is it just applicable to specific things? For example there are people who have the discipline to go to the gym and get ripped but can't beat a drug/alcohol addiction.
@GlatHjerne
@GlatHjerne 2 жыл бұрын
@@Uzodesign You shouldn't think of addiction as a discipline problem, while part of the equation all modern psychology will tell you that it isn't everything and that there are multiple other factors that will make it hard to quit a drug addiction. As for getting disciplined, in my own experience you do it one step at a time, slowly. You need to begin trusting yourself, keeping the promises you make to yourself. For example, promise yourself that you will only take cold showers the next week, they have a few proposed health benefits, then you go and do that for an entire week and then you have build some discipline and trust in yourself. After that it's mostly about turning discipline into habits so you don't have to use so much mental energy to keep it all up.

I am already overwhelmed at 2 min in... What do you do when you are 30, had bad parenting, your parent divorced, you got bullied in teens and even as a young adult? All those aspects, i dont have. I have no intelligent, no social skills and so on. Really, all things in this video jordan is saying. And even if i first learn all of this, i woudl be old already and would not be able to use all this for a better life because i will be dead anyway soon. And there is the pain to know, that so many were able to learn this naturaly when growing up. And then also, when you watch this video and do everything that is told... Where is the part like free time? Sure, i can learn every free time something new. But then, what about hobbies? Because i heard a lot that this is also very important for mental health. I feel like everything contradict with each other. You want to be sucessful in life? Learn, work, use every second of your life to improve. You are sad because you just work and learn nonstop new things? Look for a hobby, take free time...
