Just what I needed to win the war on my scraps! Actually, there are TWO wars: The first is with the scraps themselves and the second is with all those naysayers who question my sanity for saving all those "useless little pieces!" Let the vindication begin! Thank you, Donna and team!!!😊

My mom was a child of the Depression and never threw anything away. The quilts she made in her later years when she wasn’t so busy raising children are intricate works of art beautiful my favorites are the scrappy quilts she pieced using triangles cut from the newspaper as foundations. The last strips added to the large end of the triangles were the same color as were the filler pieces. I inherited her huge fabric stash which included several large boxes full of small pieces of fabric which were labeled Little Jibbles!

I also love this scrappy quilt. With any paper piecing project, I prefer to use 16# copy paper, rather than the standard 20#. copy paper. It is thin and tears away from the stitched line very easily. I must confess that I usually find scrappy quilts to be very " busy, not at all pleasing to the eye. But Donna's scrappy pattern results in a very lovely quilt! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. It will be my go-to scrap buster.

I totally agree. Now I'm in a quandary as I am quite disciplined to completely finish each quilt prior to starting another one. And that includes a label. I just basted a quilt today for our eldest son and will be quilting it myself on my domestic machine. Am committed to making a quilt for a granddaughter for her upcoming wedding. (Its actually one Donna did fairly recently..... Summer Solstice and I ordered the entire kit from Jordan Fabrics). I got the one with the black background. Well, do I make the Summer Solstice for Megan or.... see if I can sneak this one in risking the chance that it could be late for the shower? Dang it Donna.... Maybe I need to look at it as an opportunity to probably add some jewel batiks to my version of this quilt. After I received this kit, I ordered a 10" precut batiks "Tonga Treats" to use with the watermark batiks. She will love it!! Sigh, guess this quilt will have to wait a few months longer. But sure love it when Donna does projects with scraps. And I have made my share of Cozy Quilt patterns since I became an ardent follower of this channel.

I am a retired registered nurse following a 52 year career. I understand what you are sharing about Donna.....very healing indeed. Donna has what I call, 'smiling eyes'. So important and something I learned from my horses decades ago.
@cmhelv Жыл бұрын
@@quiltgram3056 Funny you mentioned the horses. I rehabbed and trained abused and/or misunderstood horses. A calm, kind, friendly face can do so much for a fractured horse. They completely look to our and their buddies' faces to set their tone. A human smile can mean the world to a hurting horse. Setting boundaries, teaching those boundaries with love and patience, and hold that line. With a kind heart and body, they'll give you so very much. Im retired now, but those years were some of the best years of my life. And I still have 2 boys that were given to me, to remind me of all the good that was done. Thought to be complete rogues, that are the ultimate pocket pals now. Anyone can handle or ride them. Their former owners didn't even recognize them standing in front of them at an AQHA show. So completely transformed. Kindness, patience, and love can change the world for those who are hurting.

@@cmhelv Love your story. All of mine became absolutely fantastic. They have taught me so much about myself and people in general. Like, we all have to walk our own path. And how a well balanced horse can protect their own space with aggression and that we need to give others time to think before I react. I learned that by observing their licking, chewing, yawning and blowing out to release even the smallest of tension. And I went on to learn that trapped tension is probably the greatest cause of illness. That said by a retired registered nurse of 53 years. The best and quickest way I have to sum up all I learned is to always have ‘smiling eyes’. And I think this is why so many love Donna so much. It just resonates with us. I still have a Hackney horse/ Morgan cross. And Noel who is a Morgan Quarter a horse cross. Gosh, really did enjoy your post. Hugs from Maine.

@@quiltgram3056you're so awesome! My boss was a Morgan breeder and we competed in combined driving mostly, but pleasure driving as well. The best years of my life were spent co-training with Tom Hilgenburg (God rest his soul). We both taught each other so much; very sinergistic. He lead the US single horse team to the silver medal in I believe 1999? A dyed in the wool Morgan man who came to realize the heart of a Quarter horse. He wanted so badly for me to compete with a Morgan. He wanted to gift any one I wanted in the field. He said my quarter horse could not compete in the endurance (cross country faze) of combined driving. I said, if I fit my boy for the job, I believe he had a big enough heart for the job. And he did. We won the Intermediate Single Horse on the Olympic course here in Georgia (the only show to use the Olympic course since 1996 Olympics). He was the only Quarter horse ever to compete at that level, let alone win. I trained my lad with an extra 400lbs on the carriage 5 days a week. Come cross country, in our marathon carriage, he was more than ready to go! When it came to our award presentation, Tom told the show committee he wanted to present us. When he did, he had tears running down his face and said, "You said he had a huge heart and could do this, and you both do and did". No one could believe we did what we did. And Leroy (my boy) was bred to be a halter horse, but all he really loved to do was be with me and drive. I didn't turn him out in a field. He was turned loose on the farm to follow me where ever I was, and whatever I was doing. If I was working with a horse, he would graze along the outside of the ring, or follow along in the field. It was incredibly hard loosing Leroy, then Mr Tom. The end of an era. But the beginning of helping horses who really needed me. And, hugs back atcha from Georgia! 😊

@@cmhelv amazing story. So nice to hear from someone who knows how to listen to a horse. My path didn’t have a mentor or any horse skills per se. just a love for horses. I do love learning and put it to use raising 4 boys, learning to understand, to build character and to learn from my mistakes. And a wonderful hubby who didn’t mind my love for horses and dogs. I understand how you knew that your QH would win the competition. Back about 20 years ago our third son talked Mike into letting me buy a Morgan gelding that was being used as a lesson horse and up for sale. Lol, we had to add a stall to a small barn we had made for a rescued POA I had and make a larger turnout. When Gunner arrived we joked as he actually drooled. Joking as in “he fits right in”… we had two Newfoundlands! I spent most of my time working with Isaiah as I wanted Gunner to be able to become adjusted (the nursing in me). He was a very reserved horse disposition wise. About 6 months later he no longer drooled. And soon after one day I was out with both of them and working with the POA. (The POA had been a real stinkpot when I got him). And slowly turned into s gem. Anyway, Gunner came up behind me, laid his head down on my shoulder and inseparable thereafter. In his former life had been used as a show saddle seat horse then lesson horse. Amazing we’re both quilters. Hugs back from Maine

I find that when I'm sewing that I make up a pattern blank either paper or fabric, and then I "store" my leftover strips or pieces by sewing them to the blank. That keeps me from having too many pieces cluttering up my space. I can then add to that block until such time as they're full. Then I staystitch around the edges and stack them up until I have enough to make a quilt. I also make up HSTs, crumbs & blocks for the same purpose.

Making quilts from fabric scraps is literally what patchwork was made for! This modern thing of buying fabrics specifically for patchworking is so strange to me. It's obviously easier to make coordinating quilts with the pre-packaged fabrics, and especially easier to make patterns that demand certain amounts of a variety of fabrics, and your projects are always beautiful as a result! But _this,_ this is the real way to do it. ;)
