The best thing about Heroquest is that I finally own it! For those that didn't know this game is towards the top of my "Top 5 for things I missed out on growing up that I intend to rectify before I die list" I was 4 when it released, so while I knew of it because of the phenomenal commercial (Brode Swoad!) Wasn't able to play until an overnight at a friend's house when I was about 9-10. We played several games and I was blown away. As soon as I got home I told my parents all about it, and did everything in my power to convince them to buy it for me. Long and short was we were poor and there was no budget for it. So I gave up on it and moved on. Fast forward to my late 20's and a friend of mine tells me all about it. The history, expansions, US versus UK releases, his grail find at a dinky thrift store. All that excitement of my youth comes bubbling up and I start scouring for a copy. Complete copies that hadn't been thrashed were prohibitively expensive, and buying several thrashed copies to cobble together a complete set would still prove quite pricey. While I kept my eyes open, and checked back from time to time on 2nd hand markets, I had accepted that barring a miracle it was just not going to happen. Then Hasbro announces that they are remaking the game. All new sculpts, updated artwork, the works. But keeping the game mechanics basically untouched. And they are going a quasi Kickstarter to launch it. Meaning I can have a BRAND NEW copy with expansions (that sold for silly amounts of money mind you), plus brand new quests and minis! So my Christmas present from my wife was my pledge for this game. And now having it in my hand, it was worth the wait. The minis are sharp, artwork stunning, quality components, and there is so much content. I'm sure there are some Heroquest purists that take issue with stylization or some details within the updates. But to them I will say that I am finally getting to embark on an adventure 25 years overdue. So sod off! The best thing about Heroquest is that I finally own it.

I am 49 years old this year. When I was a teenager I was at a store looking at all the board games when Heroquest caught eye. The cover art was amazing! I flipped the box over and when I saw the contents I was instantly sold. I took it home and started painting the pieces right away. My friends and I loved the game until the day I got married and gave the painted game with all the expansions to my best friend. Last year Heroquest was reintroduced to the world and now I’m obsessed with painting the new pieces again. I even created two larger game boards and sent one back to my friend in Michigan. I love Heroquest.

"They may not be the best thing about HeroQuest" - I see what you did there! 🤣 I actually own one of the air elemental from that set of Citadel elementals and after ~30 years of ownership I finally painted it up this year. To be honest it's far from being the most impressive of miniatures, and today it is particularly underwhelming given how powerful elementals were in Warhammer Fantasy Battle, seeing as it looks a bit lost on a 40mm base and is shorter than a Primaris space marine. Still it's nice to own a little bit of Warhammer history. Despite coming to the hobby in 1989 I'm not sure I ever played more than one game of HeroQuest. I do recall playing some sort of homebrew "game" made up by a friend that had us moving his RTB09 Terminator Squad miniatures around the HeroQuest board plus at least one other board from some random boardgame, ah the fun times to be had when nobody really knows what they're doing but everyone wants to play with the stompy soldiers with big guns and power fists!

The scale creep over the decades has definitely undermined the stature of a lot of older minis. I just love the shape and character of those designs! Some of those early games were we all just made up the rules were great fun!

I never played HeroQuest back in the day but I found a copy of the original game in a charity shop a few years ago for £2.50. I wasn't sure it had all the stuff in it to begin with but got it home and it turned out, all there! Played a couple of games with friends to have the experience and whilst other dungeon crawler adventure games do stuff better nowadays (rolling to move...nooooo), there is a neat charm to the game and definitely one that I'll crack out more and more.

Well, I found a copy of HeroQuest for $4AU at a local charity shop. It was missing a few pieces, but I was able to rectify that problem by getting a more complete set of the game from a local antique and curio shop for $18AU. I combined both contents into a single set, and now I pride myself for having it. I also own copies of Space Crusade and Battle Masters, so I have the complete range of MB/GW games. Lucky!

Being a big Hammer Horror fan it does sound like Lee to me - Also in the late 80’s his career was a lot quieter and with the budget being so large for the advert I imagine they would have easily been able to hire him. Which is great because the advert is even more brilliant. Reminds me of Labyrinth 😀

As a kinda game designer myself, I sure know that the look of a game is a lot more important that one would think of. For heroquest, the carbox furnitures, doors, and Citadel Miniature minis were maybe even more important than the rules which are... clumsy. on gameplay, Heroquest is my least favourite among the 3 MB/GW games. Yet I sometime play it again with friends. Actually the american version may have indeed corrected those gameplay weakness ! gotta look for this version someday ^^ As for my personnal, best thing I recall from HeroQuest is a moment where, one of the characters was struggling with an orc, the dwarf comes in the room, and instead of attacking the orc, decides to search for treasures and happens to find another orc xD

I had this as a 9-11 year old. Had all the expansions and event got Advanced HeroQuest and was starting to get into Warhammer Fantasy. However about 1991, my interests changed to a Sega Megadrive. I never did anything like it again, although I sometimes would go into a Games Workshop every couple of years, mostly in the 2000's when Lord of the Rings was big. Recently I have got back into it after 33 years and have just purchased the new HeroQuest game. Once thing I like is the advances with 3D printing.

AWESOME and well researched video! It's too bad that Milton Bradley wanted to market the game with such a narrow age 10 to 12 window, as it appealed to people much older also. (Thankfully it was "technically" inclusive with older folk, with the "10 to adult" descriptor.) Weirdly though, there seems to be no record anywhere of the MONTH of the game's release, (just listing 1989 in Europe or 1990 for the U.S version.)

One minor correction, when discussing The Mage of the Mirror’s elven warriors and elven archers, you say that they “can support you” in the game as if they are a variation of the men-at-arms, but the eleven archers and Warriors are actually monsters - evil elves that are there to support the big bad mage! Also Tsuequest has never shipped. Gamezone miniatures are only lying crooks. Don’t go looking for that game. Don’t give them a single cent.
@jordansorcery

Ah no! Missed my fact check on that one! Will add a note to the description so that I’m not unaccountably peddling falsehoods! That’s disappointing about TsueQuest - Gamezone looked dodgy, but I didn’t realise they hadn’t even delivered anything!

Brilliant content, mate. Heroquest holds a very special place in my heart. My introduction to the hobby was melting down lead in the kitchen, unsupervised(perfectly normal back then :D), at age 9, to fill Prince August molds that we used to swap.....but when I got Heroquest for Christmas it changed everything. Of course, this led to a life-long obsession with the Warhammer world, and ultimately my passion today working professionally as a miniature sculptor. I often wish I could see my 9 year old face if I went back in time and told me that 'when you grow up' your job will be creating and painting your own miniatures. It would have seemed more fantastical than the fantasy realms themselves... :D So, thank you Heroquest, for inspiring my life-long love and passion for miniatures.

@ 31:00 - The artwork by Terry Oaks for the unknown 1990 expansion very closely resembles the cover box art for "Adventure Design Kit" expansion released in the UK in 1990. The box was Navy Blue and the same size as KK / ROTWL expansions.

I think that's a good shout - I revisited it after putting the video out and a lot of the composition is similar to, with the same setting as the Les Edwards piece so it feels like it could have been the original cover for the kit. Strange that it would be the only one they commissioned another artist for though, and stranger still that Edwards ended up doing the cover anyway!

I still have most of the one I got as a kid as well as one my friend had making nearly 2 full sets. I also ended up getting return of the which lord and kellers keep at a Kiddie City years later as it was going out of business. Over the years I lost the boxes of the expansions and in like 2004 I bought both unused for next to nothing on ebay. I also then tried to piece together the other expansions. I even got a complete unused Hero Quest Advanced and the creation kit. I got all of the expansion parts except for one rare figure. I have seen it for sale for WAY too much in the UK many times. However a few years ago I got a 3D printer and made my own! Lots of cool custom Hero Quest figures, mods for them, and solid plastic furniture/tiles/etc. .still files in thingiverse BTW!! All that said....I haven't played it in over 25 years lol. There is a free app that acts as the "DM" that I got but haven't tried. Apparently it is buggy, but whatever. Also I did get a copy of the PC game and a CD with printable tiles and tile editor. Not sure if it is legit or not, but it's still awesome! This November I went to a game stop for xmas shopping and while in line I saw they had remakes of both Return of the Witch Lord and Kellers Keep....I guess my unused ones jist lost some "value" lol. I may pick them up though so I can use them without punching my OG ones. Maybe they will be on clearance soon, but of it picks up and they sell out, thats cool too, as it means more people are playing. I have been thinking about trying to get a group of people together soon now that table tops and D&Dtm(lol) is getting popular apparently. Anyway, fun times! Thanks!

An epic tale of collecting! There’s a few games I’ve had like that - just building up the collection through the years even if I don’t still play the game - sometimes the collecting and pouring over the sets/books is awesome on its own! Bet those unpunched sets have gone up in value even more since the reissue!

Just found you via recommended, and as you recommended, checked out Space Crusade first, then I'm back here. Awesome vids! Now I'm off to Warhammer Quest land! Look forward to an in depth Advanced HQ video if you do one. I have the core box but haven't been able to convince anyone to play it with me lol. I've had so many copies of vintage HQ pass through my hands since I was a kid, your hand me down, or stole depending who you ask description probably describes my first set haha. Had a bunch of sets i combined from garage sales etc, then a step parent kept them all, booooo. A friend gave me their copy they didnt want later in life though which I've played with the kids a bit, now have the re-releases I need to bust out! I still remember (in Australia) seeing a wall of clearance Ogre Horde and Design kit sets for $10 each, the ogres are awesome, definitely got me interested in classic GW Ogres at the time. Not a huge fan of the current models though.

I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos! I'm the same, so many sets have come and gone when I've thought I was over it, and then lo and behold I become desperate to own it again - truly timeless in my opinion!

I always credit HeroQuest for getting me into RPGs and video games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Gloomhaven, etc. The major downside is while my friends and I have fond memories of this game, it was never “fun”. Zargon easily overpowers the heroes, so that player has to hold his punches most of the time to allow the Heroes a chance to succeed. I find current games like Gloomhaven, Midarra, etc. solve this better through automaton scripting.

It definitely benefits from a "GM" style approach for the evil player, and totally get what you mean - there are many games that have refined the fundamentals over the years - it's left a great legacy!

Very good question! Stephen Baker never mentioned Dungeon Quest in interviews, just D&D and Talisman as key influences, but you're probably right - it seems unlikely that DQ didn't at least influence the GW design team to some extent

Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting on them! I really enjoyed making those Warhammer Quest videos, so much history (and a fair amount of nostalgia!) that went on to inform me as a gamer, but still holds an important place in Games Workshop history I think. @@jordansorcery I've finished watching the Warhammer Quest series, and it's been fascinating. I'm excited to see what you have in the pipeline. Keep up the fantastic work!

I think that’s totally fair, it is chock full of them so that’s a good point about almost spoiling later encounters. I think the quest itself is a good concept, but would be happy with a scaled back map of monsters

I live in Germany and recently saw the reprint edition of the base game now going for €120. I am glad that my memories are for free and my family paid significantly less for such things. Though, calculating for inflation that still seems like it is two or three times more expensive than it was back in 1990.

The retro market has definitely seen prices surge in recent times. I'm not sure if it's just a lot of us who played the games on first release wanting to buy back the nostalgia or just general market trends, but it makes the hobby an expensive one these days!

Thank you for this great video Jordan. Heroquest is a wonderful game with a wonderful history. I was lucky enough to play it in the early 90's with my childhood friends (although I got my copy just a few years ago) and even here in Italy it soon became the dream of every single child for Christmas. I am so happy that Hasbro decided to reissue it and it will be interesting to see if they're going to realize even the missing dwarf and wizard expansion packs together with the new ones (e.g. rise of the dread moon). I knew about Ye old Inn's great job and It's simply amazing to think that... after so many years we are still talking about this game, no matter where we come from or in which country we grew up.

A very good question! It seems that Hasbro decided to close down the entire MB brand around 2009, so there haven’t been any new MB Games in a decade. I do wonder why they went with the Avalon Hill brand over their umbrella Hasbro name though. Perhaps to do with marketing and target demos?
