It’s taken the best part of 25 years for Leinster to get to where they are at the moment, from when they started to build their Academy, their playing team, the coaching team, all the business and admin structures, etc, etc, etc. Now they’re reaping the rewards of that lengthy period of foresight and the disciplined business approach by the club. I think the province's overall game development plan has played a big part: Rolling out the underage coaching programmes to clubs, the regional games development officers, bringing the game into non rugby schools (& linking in clubs), etc. Horgan & SOB were exceptions at the time - Furlong, Carbery, Frawley, Aungier & Vakh ... Osborne (x2 or 3?), Lasisi, etc. are now just part of the 2nd pathway (clubs).

How do people propose to "balance" the province system in Ireland then? People seem to think there's some kind of massive favouritism towards Leinster by the IRFU or that they have some fix? Leinster is run by the schools system, these then supply the academy and the academy then supplies the first team. Players want to play for the province they're from and grown up supporting so would people suggest sending them elsewhere even if they don't wish to go? Leinster created their own system, other provinces can feel free to go ahead and rely on a private schools system if they wish but this moaning about something being unfair needs to stop. It's like listening to GAA fans complain about the Dubs being too good 🤣

Sports fan & Leinster supporter - Hello Jim, positive analysis and perspective. I cannot wait to see JB in a Leinster jersey. Irish rugby continues to evolve and develop. The unigue "club by province" in IRL has meant the fan base has great growth potential. Leinster went from a Dublin 4 Club in 2009 to a Leinster wide fan base over the following 15 years. It was amazing to see soccer premiership jerseys being replaced with Leinster tops over the years and in my area that included the local council estate. This increases the commercial success. However, we need to see a better improvement balance with Connaught and Ulster. Munster URC champions are also on the way back and have the history (more than Leinster). For now, I am waiting to buy my tickets for Croke Park, another historical landmark. I spent my younger days on Hill 16 supporting Dublin!😀

Dan Sheehan takes Sextons central contract. So that leaves pretty much 2 players wages well 3 if you count the Central contract. 9:06 Leinster built their world class system that took over 20 year to do. Leinster started from scratch and built it "from the Ground up", thats what thats their slogan. the IRFU worked with the Leinster board. This was happening when Munster were on top in Ireland and in Europe. There was problems coming down the road for munster, there set up wasn't substaneable, over spending on marquee players, year in year out. Not investing in their grassroots, schools or academy and so on. Theres a case for Connacht and Ulster as these 2 arentreated like a second taught bybthe IRFU, the boards of those 2 need to set up a proper play with the IRFU. The promotion of the team, players, club and engagement of the supporters is near as important as delivering on the field. Compare Leinster's home grown talent to any other club and if bettered then you can complain about the odd stand out external recruit. Also look at the recruitment and investment in Nienaber too, crazy good management team. Clubs need to take responsibility for filling their stands, getting their supporters engaged and make them feel like they're part of the future of the club. His Dad moved the family to Ireland to play Rugby himself, the boys spent some of their childhood living there. Now Jordie has an opportunity through his sporting talent, to go back to Ireland a place he has fond memories of to play our beautiful game - to mix it up a bit, to live life, to have some of the happy experiences for his own family as he experienced as a child!! Barrett (Messi) coming to Leinster , Munster rebuilding nicely , Connacht need more marquee players & Ulster is a huge WIP for Richie murphy 🏉🏉😂

@@niallormond6972in fairness to him he was two poor decisions away from both finals being won. In 2022 he clearly won a clean turnover which Barnes wrongly penalised him for. Then last year, the clear out that Colombes faked injury from was identical to the one inflicted on Ala'alatoa himself minutes earlier to facilitate La Rochelle's try. Any consistency in officiating and Leinster would've won

Anyone watched : Dave Gallagher Irelands greatest All Black. Great watch and a good Donegal Man. Big Jim you need to watch that doc.
@ljawgtn13938 ай бұрын
@celticbedou want to highlight your name but don't know how! After your mention of "Irelands greatest All Black" I found it and watched it. To tell the truth I found it very moving. Of course I knew who Dave Gallaher was but didn't know he was originally from Ireland and at first wondered if you perhaps meant John Gallagher, another great All Black with Irish heritage who was in NZ working as a policeman in the late 80s. The thing that really took me aback though, was the "fever-pitch" around the All Blacks coming to town. I know we think the team is absolutely everything and love that we hold our own and some, in the Rugby World, and we go on and on and are proud of our dominant history, but much like the buzz around Jordie in this video, I didn't realise the All Blacks were quite "that" massive, like Royalty massive almost, on the other side of the world!! Although it is going back a couple of decades now too. A lot of All Blacks themselves have come from small places just like Letterkenny, it would have been very humbling for them to be there I'm sure. Thanks for bringing it up, for this Kiwi girl it was a lovely story. 🏴 😂

The whinging about "thats not fair, you dont have a salary cap" is pathetic The salary cap is in place because English club owners have acted like a cartel, by agreeing to limit how much they pay for labour. If you wanna cry foul about anything, cry foul that there is a salary cap in England, rather than there isnt in Ireland. Jim wasn't really having a go, so this isnt really directed at him, more that this narrative exists at all

James Lowe has recounted that he knew little about Leinster when they approached him. He met Graham Henry at a social event and asked him what he thought. Henry advised him to go, saying Leinster had a great set-up. Lowe also said that when he arrived he was amazed to find Leinster had 4 full-time physios. He said (as best I remember) that at Chiefs there was one full-time and one part-time physio.

I have to say I am gutted by this series of events. I started to really feel this last year in the build to the World Cup where Leinster got all the 50/50 call in terms of squad selection (fully accepting they are the best and they play regularly together) but still felt that it exacerbated the imbalance. Followed by Snyman and Barrett with Toupu to follow. We seem to learn lessons very slowly in rugby. This to me is the equivalent of the NBA champions or supper bowl champs being given all the first round draft picks and everyone else being told to do better.

Barrett will be coming in largely to give Keenan a break and cover for inevitable injuries (e.g. like Ringrose, Keenan and O'Brien this season). Frawley is reportedly moving on, which, coupled with Ngatai leaving and a lot of injury prone players, leaves Leinster short across the backs.

Why did you go to Gloucester and then Montepllier while still a Scotland international Big Jim...? Probably becasue you fancied a change.. Barret at 27 has played all his Rugby in NZ. He had other offers, but Leinster & Ireland offer style and structure that he will fit in to easily, and player welfare is a big thing in Ireland too due to player number shortages, which has got to be attractive to a player looking to have a long career...

@fawltyoldboybasil.21789 ай бұрын
'...leinster rugby is for posh irish third level schools' - that old tired chestnut again. There's a lengthy history regarding team sports with the round/oval ball in Ireland. Soccer & Rugby & Cricket were referred to as 'Garrison Sports' (meaning brought in by the British when they controlled Ireland prior to 1921). After Ireland gained independence in '21, the Irish Government (& Catholic Church) took over the education system. Native sports (Gaelic Football & Hurling) were prioritized - in fact, players who participated in any of the 'foreign sports' were literally banned from the native sports!! The IRFU never adopted such a policy towards the native sports. The governing body for the native sports, the GAA, were openly hostile to schools & clubs that played Rugby and Soccer. Unintentionally I believe, these actions & attitudes by the GAA helped establish this narrative & image about 'posh Irish third level schools' playing rugby. It's only in the last 20 years that the GAA changed its attitude towards the sport and its participants.

What with Leinster swallowing most of the central contracts and being the origin for a huge majority of the financial base, supporters/population base & fount of young player sources they are going from strength to strength - Yes, great for Leinster but what risk/danger of other provinces failing while the Pale prospers? - could Connacht be the first to fall?…. then Ulster…? Leinster & Ireland becoming essentially the same? A one team island….. I suspect this may sound less attractive even to the blue-spectacled.

Lowe & Gibson Park were nowhere near playing for the AB's Jim. It's only under the Irish system that their development has made them the players they are now. Ireland has 1/4 the professional players of NZ, Eng, France and others so the coaching quality and investment in players is paramount for any kind of success. IRFU have been very smart in the last decade and shown a willingness to learn, especially from al the 1/4 final defeats and performance anxiety etc. While South African fans may jibe about Ireland never reaching a semi final its really a fear for when they do.
