I find Josée Chouinard was really the innocent collateral damage to the whole Tonya-Kerrigan drama. She could've had a shot at the medals but because of this drama, she missed this opportunity forever and this was her last Olympics too. She retired shortly afterwards, such an underrated and extraordinarily talented artist and athlete not to mention the incredible grace and sportsmanship.

Josee was coming in here in 9th place. She had no medal chances. She's enchanting but she was a short program skater, which she didn't demonstrate at the Olympics. She might have been rushed into starting her long program but what you saw here was her norm when the cameras were on. It was CLEAR that she had more talent than she showed. She also didn't completely retire either. She returned for a shot at redemption at the 1996 Canadian Nationals to continue her amateur career after a year as a pro. She failed to make the world team and promptly retired again.

Well, I just looked at her performance at the '94 Worlds. She actually did either better or the same here (she fell 3 times at Worlds and doubled a triple. I can't remember how many times she fell here and can't look again), so she was no "victim" of anything except her own pattern of performing.

All the comments I'm reading below are about Tonya Harding. Let's not give her any more attention and focus on the grace and integrity that Josee demonstrated in this performance...which I'll always remember fondly for introducing me to "An American In Paris." Poise, wit, and charm...this program had it all. One of my all time faves.

I blame Tonya's coaches. They really should have extra equipment (laces, needle and thread for emergency costume repairs, even skates) ready for these types of situations. These situations seemed to happen frequently enough to give them a clue that they needed to be prepared.

@@aspenrobinson8797Thats like saying its a pilot's fault if his plane loses an engine. Its not a pilot's job to check every last part prior to takeoff. They have enough to do - thats why there are airplane mechanics. It's not Tonya's job either. Her job is to skate. It's those around her who's job it is to acquire proper equipment.

Poor Josee. She was one of the most elegant skaters ever. I don't dislike Tonya but the lovely Ms. Chouinard should not have been penalized for Ms. Harding's lace problems. Unfair & just plain rude to Ms. Chouinard who should have been given the proper amount of warm up & readiness. Just plain WRONG. Josee actually had an (outside) chance at a medal & the judges ruined it for you. Ms. Chouinard, if it's any consultation, you are one of the loveliest & most enchanting skaters of your era.

Here is my opportunity to explain for my intense dislike of Tonya, When Josee Chouinard fell, she didn't cry. But when Tonya Harding attempted to do her jump, she didn't complete it, but she did NOT fall. That is so hard for me to believe because I thought Tonya's should be mature enough to act like a little snotty child, crying to the judges and expecting them to believe her excuses such as a broken shoe lace.

you had to feel for this girl having to skate earlier after the tonya disaster. This was Josee's big chance on the oly stage and to have it affected like this just sad - nothing against Tonya but as the American commentators said why is it always Tonya. Likewise somewhow lucky Witt somehow beat many of these girls, she is a great competitior, but really under the new system no way would Witt do so well. Tonya and Witt had that uncanny ability to make it about them or to get the breaks. Tonya and her misfortunes - not saying they were on purpose and Witt with how everyone else crumbles for whatever reason.

That is exactly what I said 20 years ago as this was happening. Something was "always happening to Tonya." I also remember that the Olympic officials were trying to decide if Tonya could attend or not. The fact that this happened all the tie to Tonya seems a bit suspect. I think the rule is better now, you get it fixed and continue from where you left off. I wonder if this type of thing is the reason for a deduction now for equipment, to avoid drama like this. This is similar to what happened to Mao Asada at the 2005 World Juniors and to Nobunari Oda, minus the drama. Poor Josee, it had to throw off her preparation.

The thing about this is figure skating at the Olympics has never been fair. Ever. The way the competition goes always has controversy and criticism. Last Olympics, there was a lot of debate between Medvedeva and Zagitova. Medvedeva did a deep and meaningful routine with a message. Zagitova had a routine that did all the things to get bonus points. People were infuriated. The Olympics before that, Plushenko was the only one to successfully do a quad, but because he did it at the beginning of the program, he got silver, and the gold medalist was not someone who could do a quad. In 2002, there was an incident of a judge being bribed to give a better score to one of the pairs. 1994? This situation. Before that? Oh boy.

You make a good point about being prepared. It showed at Skate America earlier in the season when her blade came loose and before that at Nationals where her dress came undone. When something like this happens 3 times to one skater, where usually it happens never, it suggests a lack of preparedness. And she was my favorite skater then. But she really made some bad choices.

At the time, it didn't seem like a big thing before she got onto the ice... that is, until she was in the air. You know how sometimes when you jump in the air, that's when you notice that something is really wrong? She was going to do her triple toe loop, but once she was in the air, she noticed that something wasn't right, which resulted in her popping it. Good thing, too. If she went ahead with it, she could've broken her ankle. :(

And maybe an extra outfit for her too, since hers was obviously too small! As for Josee Chouinard being rushed to skate her routine, this was all completely unfair to her, needless to say, though not necessarily Tonya's fault. Highly unethical and unprofessional on the judges and Tonya's part....she just could not make it under pressure and cracked and to put Josee on the spot like that...shame on them! I remember watching this Olympics and felt so ashamed that the name Tonya Harding was associated with the sport of ice-skating and America because it ruined and tainted not only the sport but the athletes themselves....even after watching it after all these years I find myself once again appalled, angry and disgusted by the events surrounding the train wreck/nightmare that was Tonya Harding..... and the fact that such behavior was allowed by the skating committee was a further disgrace, in fact so much so that they implemented changes we see today in order to prevent such events from occurring again. The only positive aspect of this story is that ice-skating finally got some attention while underscoring the sleazy politics of Olympics in general.

I don’t think it’s fair to remark fault to a person if something goes wrong with someone else’s performance like the announcer, Scott did. I’m not a supporter of Tonya, personally I don’t even like her. However the young lady that skated next should really be ready to go, mentally on board if all were to go according to plan the program would be about 10 minuets away. She was a graceful dancer and beautiful to watch but she fell on her own landings, Tonya didn’t physically make that happen yet they blame her for it. That’s just wrong in my opinion, they have time to warm up, stretch while getting ready, and practice skating in the morning so if your program isn’t ready by that point it’s not going to be & everybody has off days skaters do fall. You can’t blame that on someone else, off . With Tonya I think the judges could have disqualified Tonya if they had reason to but there was something wrong with her skate, it was all mangled looking, so if anything she really hurt herself if you want blame peoples mental state of being ready to perform. Going on the ice, looking stupid, coming off, people judging you already and them going back on her nerves must have been shocked by that point. Tonya didn’t go out and give a stellar performance thereafter.

She pulled that crying poor me bullshit because she knew the later you skate in the order, the higher they judges will score you.

That is a complete lie... as a national Figure skater myself the White system works in a comparison between skaters... Tonya should have prepared extra laces but it wasnt Tonya's or josee's fault. The OIC did this Olympics so sloppy

Ugh like I said, Tonya was such a cleaver person. Always looking for something to save her performance. Dress malfunction, unnoticed loose blade, cracking up Kerrigan's knee caps, untied shoe laces.. it just is ridiculous. She is an infamous cheater and desperate sore looser. Love her triple axels though.

Dee Zyre Tonya's intention was to have Nancy's leg broke, just lucky for Nancy it was just badly bruised. Tonya was the solicitor behind that attack and after watching 'I, Tonya' she makes my skin crawl more now than ever. I can't beleive she eats with that mouth on her..what a skuzzy woman ! She would lie if the truth made a better movie. Lol .

I personally would've sued Tanya. It's the Olympics for crying out loud. You don't act like that. You have to have your shit together. You not only represent yourself but you represented the United States and this is how u.acted..very Ryde and unprofessional. If I were other skaters I.would've sued Tanya the skating union, the Olympics for allowing Tanya to.skate at all...that's WHAT other skaters should've done. They should've gotten together and threaten to sue since Tanya was allowed to skate.

+Tyler Chandler "You have to have your shit together." if that is the case, wouldn't it be true then for Josee as well? Josee should have pulled her shit together as well. She and she alone is responsible for her failed routine. A great skater should have been able to do the routine she had done hundreds of times over in practice, in competition as well. No matter when she was put on the ice. Tanya's lace was broken. Enough to the point that the JUDGE granted her extra time to fix it. If it wasn't legitimate, the woman wouldn't have granted that time to Tanya. Things like that happen all the time and it doesn't matter if it was the olympics... Its not like she broke it on purpose... But blaming someone else for a failed jump is stupid. Despite all of that, it would be dumb to sue because guess what... Tanya got her win stripped from her and was BANNED for life from the USFSA. What more could be done? They took everything she had away from her already.

Oh, don't apologize for your comment. I don't like her any more than you do. I was just speaking from a logical perspective. Otherwise, I can't stand the woman. Good riddance to bad rubbish is all I have to say about her. :p

It's a good thing she didn't break any bones??? Sorry, but I had to chuckle a bit at that comment. I think that may have been the best example of karmic retribution ever witnessed in sports.

Absolutely no offence to ms choinard, but come on it wasn't like it was days too early, it was a few minutes. Am tired of hearing how fragile skaters psyches are. A true athlete who has her routine down should not go into meltdown because of a few minutes. And she had a spotty career at best.

I agree. Michael Phelps's coach would make him practice hungry, cold, different times, ect. He'd change things up because you have to have your A game in adversity. Also, a lot of elite gymnasts would practice their routines with the music stopping to make sure they could handle an interruption.
