Joseph Carey Merrick, often erroneously called John Merrick, was an English man known for having severe deformities. He was first exhibited at a freak show under the stage name The Elephant Man" and then went to live at the London Hospital after he met Sir Frederick Treves, subsequently becoming well known in London society.

I had my daughter aged 14 watch the film with me and it changed her life! She could not understand what was in the minds of the people who tortured and hurt this gentle man. She just passed her psychology degree with honours! Because of Joseph Merrick! Now she has an educated understanding of him and the people who hurt him! RIP Joseph Merrick. ❤

Hi TDN isn't that wonderful comment how powerful the film can be. I'm so pleased she got into psychology and passed her degree. If I had my time again, that's probably what I would like to do that. I used to read the subject avidly when I was younger. Thank you ever so much. A very happy comment. Regards, Alan

@@likeaboss6421 I think it was the film " The Elephant Man" that made people call him John. When I think of all these narcissistic plastic people these days paying thousands to look like perfect individuals. Joseph Merrick had more beauty about him than these 'look at me " shallow people will ever have.❤️

This absolutely breaks me every time. Although I wasn't physically impaired like Joseph was I was made to feel just as bad as he was, by my father. What I saw in the mirror was a reflection of Joseph looking back at me. I can't bare to watch the end where all he wanted was to lie down flat and he couldn't, but he did and he passed away... Finally getting the peace he deserved. Rest peacefully beautiful, beautiful man. ❤🙏🕊 x

Some years ago I was fortunate enough to see a play about John. The actor that played him had no make-up and no rubber prosthetics. He played the role naked apart from a jock strap. As the play developed he twisted his body to replicate John's deformity. It was an outstanding performance - one of the finest I have ever seen in many years of theatre going. Thank you for posting this.

That was the decision early on when Pomeranz’s play was first produced in the late 1970s. The idea was to emphasize Merrick’s humanity and vulnerability rather than have the audience focused on makeup or prosthetics. Over the years actors as varied as David Bowie, Mark Hamill, and Bradley Cooper have all played Merrick this way.

It is truly a heartbreaking story. I was very fortunate that I saw David Bowie play Joseph Merrick on Broadway with my mother. We were both so taken with David's talent, how he was able to create the deformities with his own body and with his acting and not with make up. My mother was very taken with him and cried. Life can inflict some terrible/cruel diseases and dissformaties on us for no fault of our own, no matter how good or kind you maybe, and for no reason. Early on you say that the film of The Elephant Man was directed by David Lean, when, in fact, it was directed by David Lynch. I can see how Lean was a inspiration, because the film looks positively Dickensian. But it was in fact, David Lynch‘s second film.

Wonderfully presented and as usual the content well researched and v appropriate. What a v sad and tragic short life…The film was certainly a tear jerker and very shocking to see first time around in particular ( I’ve seen it several times but it always brings on the tears). Really fabulous portrayal of John Merrick by John Hurt, amazing acting and also the part played by Anthony Hopkins, another great actor. Thanks so much for covering this. So sad his skeleton could not be laid to rest properly though but I’m sure he is with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and truly at peace 🙏🏼

Its so wrong that Joseph Merrick’s skeleton isn’t buried with the rest of his remains. Queen Mary University of London nor anyone else has the right to keep any part of this man’s remains and display it like some sort of historical artifact. He should be allowed to rest in peace like everybody else. 💔😢

I remember the movie in the 1980s it was the first time I saw how Hopkins can act so well, and become my favorite actor he was also in the silence of the Lambs. I have that movie on DVD, it's my Halloween movie to watch a slasher.

Thank you for this video. I wish I weren't so far to even visit the grave he so deserved. In my opinion, treating his remains as science objects was extremely disrespectful. But at least they found out that his 'disease' came from his mother, Mary Jane's side. Joseph Merrick's courage changed many lives, including mine, and his legacy was leaving the example that we can always be better, we should always aim for goodness and spread love, no matter how hard the world beats you. It's still impossible for me to even conceive being like that, but I do try to follow his steps, since filling his shoes is impossible for most people, including me. Nanda from Brazil

I wonder if people like him are put on this earth to teach us not to judge by looks. He was a lovely kind gentle soul. God bless him. If theres a heaven hell get there. I used to to think i was ugly and watched the film about him and it changed my life, i feel so grateful now i didn't suffer any awful disease like him. And i felt selfish too for complaining about my looks and merrick just got on with his life the best way he could ❤️
