Its such a shame that the Paul and Jessica training scenes were left out. I felt that Jessica's power has been overlooked with this omission and that of the Bene Gesserit as a whole.
@secretsofdune

We didn't get most of the concepts in the movie because of all the cuts and cramming the story into the timeframe given. it's also the way the movie was made as a slow burn. That's why I struggle sometimes to compare the movie itself to LOTR because what Fellowship of the Ring achieved in a storytelling sense is truly incredible.
@TheVagabond627

The deleted scene that gets me the most is the Water of Life scene that was initially the end of the movie. Not just that in and of itself, the visuals of Jessica’s body adapting to the poison both externally and internally, but what Paul sees in that moment as well. He sees the battle of Arrakeen, Feydakin and Sardaukar fighting in the thousands. He sees Gurney roaring with rage, Chani wailing in grief, Alia in the flesh, Thufir’s suicide, and the real kicker, Paul sees himself an older beaded man extending his hand to the sky… with a bandage wrapped around his eyes 👀. Enticing

The thing I gather as I learn more about all the scenes that were cut, and the resistance to creating an Extended Edition by Villeneuve and Joe Walker, is that even after the creation of a spectacular movie like Dune, the full story of Dune is still in a sense "unfilmable". Yes, a movie can be made that is still quite good, but a truly epic creation has been left on the cutting room floor, due to financial constraints. That epic film will forever go unmade, and that makes me sad.

@@secretsofdune --- It's a real pity those meaningful scenes were deleted. Our first view of Jessica at breakfast is unfortunate: She 'corrects' Paul --- and we are not given a chance to see his ability to defy Reverend Mother Gaius Mohiam's Voice, ordering him to 'come here!' before he was tested with the Home Jabbar. The scene as you describe with Paul and Jessica would have given us a better impression of the trust between them. Unfortunately, what we see is a mother ridiculing her son at breakfast. The Lost Scenes deprive viewers of an accurate view of all the characters...the parts we call 'character development'. I think that's a major disservice to Frank Herbert's Dune.

Here's to hoping, but when Jason Momoa said he hoped to see an extended cut, Denis responded in an interview with: "I love Jason but such a thing doesn’t exist! The Director’s Cut is what people are watching in theatres right now. There will be no other cut. Yes I could have made a much longer, more contemplative movie, but that was not the plan." Would be great if he changed his mind but he seems pretty firm.

It's funny, for me when I watch deleted scenes from movies there's usually a mixture feelings. Like some scenes I wish they would've been included and there are scenes where I think, "Yup, I can see why this was cut." But not with Dune. With every cut scene I hear about, I just think, "This should've been in the movie." Denis seems very keen on not looking back on his films, which I can understand and respect. But he also said Dune takes it power in its details, and each cut scene is a detail that would've given this adaptation more power and richness. I hope someday Dune will be the one exception in his career, where he looks back and realizes Dune is bigger than his philosophy of not looking back, just this once. That he, Joe Walker, and Hans Zimmer will include every deleted scene with additional music that finds the perfect balance between what was used in the theatrical cut and Zimmer's most experimental stuff from his sketchbook. A single film viewed in three parts, just as the novel. The movie is a 7.5/8 out of 10 in its current form, but could be even higher, if these deleted scenes could be restored.

That fight scene dialogue when Paul talks about mood and Gurney responds, why did they have to frikk'n cut out the best part "Mood's a thing for cattle or making love or playing the baliset. It's not for fighting." Sorry to say but several of the alterations in this version of Dune, scenes from the novel that got left out or added in that weren't in the novel at all, make this a worse adaption than the 2000 mini series. The worst change is the fact that the Sardaukar are shown to be "openly" helping the Harkonnen when in the novel there's a good reason why they had to keep that a secret. That Sardaukar troops had to disguise themselves in Harkonnen uniform.

If Gurney had explained to Paul about the inkvine scar, it'd've been too blatant an "exposition" statement and broken the suspension of disbelief, because you'd say wait, he's been Paul's constant instructor and companion his whole life, and he's just telling him this now? The director or editor made the right choice to not underestimate the audience to understand it intuitively.
@humbleopulence
@humbleopulence 3 ай бұрын
I disagree. There is a middle ground between what you described they shouldn't do, and what they ultimately went with. And that is showing it visually, from Paul's POV (not a POV shot) to the audience. Literally have him begin to ask why Gurney is harranguing him over the Harkonnens (he was intense - you could've put it after that), and have Gurney begin to say something but choose against it. Shot on Paul eyeing his inkvine scar, realising it may be connected to his experience with the Harkonnens and his visible anger about the subject. There, fixed it for you, and I only added about 3-5 shots and 20-30 seconds of runtime. Imagine that but throughout the film with everything they cut - thats a movie. Create meaning to the audience by sequencing seemingly random shots to create a non random, pre-planned whole. What you don't do is spend minutes at a time watching spaceships land and people walking through hallways with minimal dialogue. The film is more like "Dune - Vignettes From Arrakis" rather than an actual film.

I'm glad that the banquet scene from the book still exists in some form in the film. Whilst its not crucial to a visual telling of the story, it does highlight many things: that the Atreides are fighting Harkonnen influence on all levels, that there are hidden links between the Fremen and the smugglers through Liet-Kynes, even the fact that Kynes is Fremen and to some extent caught up in the Bene Gesserit manufactured prophecy. We learn not only of the Harkonnen's attempt to conceal the identity of their agent by laying flase trails pointing to Lady Jessica, but also that whilst Thufir Hawat fell for the deception, Leto saw right through it. WE also learn that Paul unwittingly understands something of Planetology, thus begining to win Kynes over to his side. There was so much going on in this chapter of the book that, in some ways, any adaptation has to leave it out, which is a shame. This formal dinner contrasts very strongly with brief mentions of food eaten by the Fremen band in-sietch, and even, much later on, Jessica receiving coffee from an unseen donor. And of course, the sharing of the Water of Life thiat binds the Fremen together as a community...

Oh, man. So many scenes that would have enriched the movie and would have helped the message Frank tried to send us about holy wars and Mesia. 1984 managed for some moments to transmit some glimpses from the message. Thank you for your video.

Seeing these cut scenes helps explain why I initially thought Denis' version of Dune did not follow the book. Many of the scenes in the movie were not in the book. I wish he had left these scenes in the movie, it would have strengthened it.

None of what you presented seems like fluff to me. Any and all of those scenes would've simply made the experience that much more fulfilling. I understand there are numerous reasons for "trimming the fat" (for lack of a better term) from a film. But when you're getting a story experience as rich as Dune, you want to savor every moment; bask in it. There was PLENTY of room for the delicious little additions that you highlight here, and I can only hope (despite what I've heard Denis indicating) that a longer cut will one day be made available. I'll buy that in a heartbeat!

If the film was cut a little better and played at a slightly faster pace (with selective scenes and sequences going slower, and not the entire film), you wouldn't need to add too much to the runtime. Honestly, I feel like the film could clock in at a robust 2.40 hour runtime, only 5 mins longer than the theatrical, with almost everything left in satisfactorily.

I wish they'd filmed the movie to be 5-6 hours long. Show the first 3 hours and leave on a cliffhanger. Wait for the reception of the first to come in, let the speculation about the sequel stew, then release the next one immediately after. I'm not even talking about a sequel. Just a longer version of this movie in 2 parts.

I am sure they could put ALL the deleted scenes together and make a hell of a Movie out of it. The first book alone could crack 4 films of 2 1/2 hours each. People will buy it. A quality production like this is just screaming for a full release of everything.

I know it’s not ”canon” but Dune lore refers Alexander as founder of ”First Empire”. The Imperium ’s historical archive are bit misfinformed of ancient past: Historical figures shrouded in myths just like Gilgamesh. DUNE gives me odd feeling of reading historical epoch written in future. Or as may be, stuck living in ancient past, helplessly observing ghosts of stars (but in reverse) reflecting the far future. Many possibilities. Is that how prescience feels like for Paul Atreides? Powerless to stop the inevitable jihad, only observe and choose which path is fitting for him. Or are his choices delusions? (Just finished reading Dune, again.) Time is relative. 😵‍💫
@secretsofdune
@secretsofdune 2 жыл бұрын
I actually would have really enjoyed the inclusion of the Alexander symbolism in the film to get more of the "Paul the conquerer" vibes, but I'm sure we'll get more of that in part two.

Just by all those intercuts between Paul's training by Jessica and Paul's training by those loyal to his father, and other well placed looks and glances of suspicion between Jessica and Gurney and Duncan and Thufir could have done A LOT to add the "Jessica may betray us" subtext. Just make it about Paul being torn between these two "camps" and his father steadying him when he tells him that he's only pretending to suspect Jessica, just like in the books. All of this wouldn't have even made that much of a dent in the runtime if edited in properly! You wouldn't even need to add more than 5-10 minutes for it (and shorten some long shots already in the movie)! The dramatic question of the film is a simple one - Someone is going to betray the good Duke, Leto Atreides - Who is that someone? That's half of the movie, right there. What an unbelievable waste of good material. This is just so heartbreaking! There is so much that another pass at the edit could've fixed!

As The Batman has proven, mainstream audiences have grown patient enough to invest in a three-hour film, or even longer with Scorsese's The Irishman. Both are extraordinary pieces of work. What strikes me as strange is that The Batman and Dune shared a production company - Warner Brothers - yet Dune was seemingly forced to cut out so many scenes. Where The Batman was really pushing the boundaries of the UK 15 rating, Dune really could have flourished with the brutality that a UK 15 rating would allow. My point is, goddamn it, we need the full extended cut. We can take it, we've taken two years of Covid ffs.

Dune was a bigger risk - not child friendly (no matter how dark The Batman was, there's a built-in audience/toys etc), only half of the book/unfinished story, following BO failures (DL's Dune, Blade Runner 49)...they obviously wanted to ensure the biggest take possible in order to greenlight the second half. One has to assume wb wants to maximise profits - it wouldn't surprise me if they release extended cuts after part 2 is released, similar to LOTR.
@mrquirky3626
@mrquirky3626 2 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't that adding additional scenes causes the audience to have to sit a few minutes longer, it's that it causes the production of the film to take months more and lots of extra $$$$$. Movies like the LOTR trilogy, Titanic and Avatar proved we will gladly sit for a 3+ hour movie, even more than once. But after the disappointing box office figures of Denis' Blade Runner 2049, a cerebral sci-fi like Dune was not a guaranteed winner among a mainstream public conditioned on super hero films and Disney movies. WB was only willing to cover 25% of the production budget, Legendary was the studio that paid the remaining 75% and they have their financial limits. Hopefully, now with part one's success, WB will actually be willing to contribute more for part two and maybe even a future adaptation of Dune Messiah like Villeneuve wants to do.
