In this video, the blues legend Josh Smith teaches me about his approach to Blues Guitar chords - he's for sure one of the finest Blues guitarists on the planet with a KILLER groove! It's a lotta fun and trial of a new series of 'teaches Justin' where I get my buddies to show me cool things I love about their playing - basically what I'd be asking if I went for a private lesson with them! Hope you find it interesting!

If you dig his playing then check out his awesome course on Truefire (I got it! - truefire.com/josh-smith-guitar-lessons/blue-highways-improv-roadmaps/c1480) and his website (www.joshsmithguitar.com/) to see grab his Live At The Spud concert video (he's INCREDIBLE live!) - and go see him in person when this virus mess is under control!

Josh's blues knowledge is so impressive. A lot of players don't do their research and go all the way back to the source. The way he reals off all the examples at the end as well as throughout is testament to his homework. Matt Schofield is the same. Great video. Thanks a lot for sharing justin

This video is gold. Josh is gold. He reminds that so much of the American music tradition - blues, jazz, country etc. - is an oral tradition. Not codified in books, but conveyed from mentor to learner, directly from the source. It makes a mockery of modern teaching practice from books. Justin obviously realises here that he still has as much to learn as everyone else watching. The blues aren't three static chords and the minor pentatonic (perhaps mixed in with the major!). It is a lot, lot more than that - as are other styles. Thank you, Josh and Justin!

@@justinguitar I started playing 2 months ago, and went at it probably overboard in the very beginning trying to get past the beginner stages sooner. Played hours and hours a day. The problem is now I have a stiffness / pain in the middle knuckle of my pinky and index finger. Doesn't hurt if they're extended, just if I close them into a fist. Have you ever heard of anything like that justin?
@VilleKuitunen6

@@StoicTrader- Please pay attention to warming up before playing. Loads of material available on KZbin, look it up. Secondly, not knowing if this is a problem with you but having had similar issues I would make sure I play with correct posture. Ergonomics --- super important. But it's also normal to have some painful symptoms in the beginnig, just perhaps not in the joints. Also you should try to relax when playing, it's hard in the beginning but keep at it. Good posture and warm up will help loads.

Love this new series / format - this is an absolutely fascinating hour I'm constantly awed by Josh's playing and knowledge and Justin you've been a big part of my own personal guitar renaissance so thanks for that! Got so much to say about how we all ended up noodling minor pent over everything - watching rather than listening - MTV versus radio / vinyl - TAB versus transcribing by ear - guitar 'arms race' in the late 80s / 90s - harmonically simpler music - style over substance - probably worth an actual essay rather than a YT comment that's as long as one!

Very interesting indeed and I learnt a fair amount just watching Josh. He knows so much about the blues and obviously enjoys talking about it. It's a shame that the sound quality of this film was not very good especially when you were talking Justin. There's always something new to be learned no matter how proficient you may be. It's the same old scales and chords but it's what you do with them that's important.
