Josh Williams: Opportunities for Crypto in Gaming

Forte cofounder and CEO Josh Williams does a deep dive on “Opportunities for Crypto and Gaming.” Williams explains that blockchain technology could have an even bigger impact on gaming than the internet because it's not just connecting people, but potentially changing business models by aligning the incentives of developers and players. It can do this by allowing players to truly own the assets in games and verify their provenance, and by enabling developers to code rich incentive systems and rewards into games. By incorporating these mechanisms, Williams believes, an already exploding gaming industry will grow and create multi-billion-dollar marketplaces within games that will truly benefit players and developers.

I think there are a lot of parallels in gaming and crypto, the target market (predominantly male, 18-34, tech/digital enthusiasts) and the investment in time + money in a repetitive action to attain mastery. The inexorable mechanics are that games need micro-transactions, so that majority of players _can_ participate .. it follows that only cryptocurrencies with very low fees are viable in games - with a token like Nano you can actually have 100k players each pay 0.3333 USD to unlock a game feature or asset. You'll get a much healthier game ecosystem this way - better for players, better for game developers.

I mean i get many other situations where it'll be useful and different than the current game model, but for what he says at 10:11, is that not what Dark Souls already does without any underlying blockchain? Maybe its just a poor example, but blockchain/smart contracts in this instance doesn't seem worth the added complexity unless i am missing something. I mean I guess instead of just receiving additional points, you get actual tangible "currency" but if you can only spend that currency on things (similar to DLC or various game company "points" that we see today) then i guess im still confused on the appeal?
