Thanks for this GREAT review man. You just helped me save $1,500. I had ordered the Canon RF lenses, but cancelled it once I saw that the Sigma was practically identical. The Canon might have a tiny advantage in certain focusing scenarios, but it's stuff I would never notice or care about so I cancelled the order and just got the Sigma for $1,099 vs $2,600 for the RF.

Thanks for that. Just out of curiousity, were you using the same WB for both lenses? I know most Sigmas are generally warmer than Canon glass but I didn't expect the huge difference seen at 04:30 where the Sigma has way more punch and "glow" in the skintones. If that is good or bad is personal I guess. But here I tend to prefer the Sigma fwiw.

one thing on the autofocus noise. the sigma is notably louder than the canon due to canon's USM. However; you didn't hear the sigma in this test because your ambient audio lowered the gain on the internal mic of the camera. If you are in quieter environments, the autogain will increase and the "ticks" of the sigma's AF will become very apparent.

Fantastic review. Thank you so much. I have longed to buy the Canon after renting it to use with my R6. It was the BEST shoot of my life. BUT the price! If there wasn't a SIGMA that looks SO CLOSE, I'd still have held out for Canon. BUT there is the SIGMA. So I just ordered the Sigma (which is on sale - normally $1299 and right now $1141) and wanted to refresh my memory about why it was so good so I came here and saw the review I'd previously liked :). Sigma was as good or better than the Canon in all cases except Sigma AF was audible (and so is the Sigma 18-35 that I own and LOVE) but not significant. And if I'm micro nitpicking, the IS "could have" a little more nano movements. Canon is double the price so this is an easy Sigma win for me (although I hope they eliminate the motor sound to the Canon level and charge the same).

canon have really dropped the ball on the RF system. They were behind the mirrorless curve against sony, and also prevented third party manufacturing. Unfortunately, people have realised just how capable old ef lenses and tamron and sigma lenses are with the R bodies, that their prices are still staying up. Oh man. That's a tough decision. It depends on what you are using it for and what your other lenses are. If you are doing video and need the IS, then maybe the Sigma over the EF 2.8 II and it's cheaper. Nowadays you can get a pretty cheap used copy of the EF 2.8 II though. I think it really comes down to personal preference, they have slightly different character. I personally prefer the Canon lenses a bit. Hi thanks for your content. I realy like your format Do we loose à big amount of quality if using vidéo with non rf lens on the canon r5 ? I know in photo we are around 18mgapixels but in video ? I have the sigma 18 35 art Thanks à lot to keep Engaging with your community

You are losing megapixels with photos on the R5 with the Sigma 18-35 because that is an APSC lens (not full frame). The camera crops in automatically so you are not getting a full sensor readout. This will be the same case with video.

I dig my Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 I will eventually move to Canon RF 24-70 2.8 If for any reason, just so I eliminate the need for the adapter and also I believe mayched with the R5 & R6 the stabilization will be a notch above. The Canon RF 14-35mm F4 IS that lens stabilized with both my R5 & R6 is ridiculous. The one place I may go with sigma is.. primes.. I'd like to grab the 24mm, 50mm, 85mm & 105mm.

Sigma is great! I have this lens the only thing is its weight. it's quite heavy. but for sure outperforms EF lens

Is there no additional crop for the sigma glass on the r5? Since it is made for ef which usually is crop sensor? Thinking of getting it since I also use a black magic 6k
@Josh_Sattin3 жыл бұрын
Nope. This Sigma is a full frame lens. The more common Sigma 18-35 is a crop lens.

The Canon RF lens has more details and contrast. Thanks for the review, going to pass on Sigma and get the Canon. I got the Sigma 50-100 1.8 it sounded like a old wooden ship that was going to fall apart when using it for video lol

Nice one Josh, I shot with the Sigma on an Eos R for 2 years, then switched to the R5 with the RF lens. I much prefer the Canon lens. Especially form factor and feel when holding it. I found the Sigma very front heavy on the adaptor. Edit: also, the focus ring went twice on the Sigma in the time I had it and i had to send it in for repair. I found it to be very poor for manual focus.

Enjoyed the review, thanks. I do disagree about the stabilization though. The Canon is stable with nice organic adjustments. The Sigma is also pretty stable, but making really ugly micro-adjustments (jitters basically). It's a very digital look and I doubt whether Warp Stabiliser is going to like it very much. That section really sold me on the Canon RF to be honest.

have to agree there the canon is much much smoother

I need to add a comment about the sigma I have two sigma’s art 24-70mm f2.8 and another two canon’s which are used with 4 canon rp câmeras One sigma got a focus problem after one year of use. The lens was sent for fix, we paid for a new focus sensor and after changing it, nothing happened. The problem persists, it doesn’t focus. Now my second sigma lens started to give a glimpse of might having the same problem. In my opinion for somebody who use it to shoot 2 to 5k shots in a weekend this lens can’t make it. I don’t think I’m unlucky that two lenses of the same brand and line are getting the same problem.

Can you do another video only about how stabilisation working on this two lenses in different modes?
@Josh_Sattin3 жыл бұрын
I don't have the Sigma lens anymore, but the only other mode to try is adding electronic IS on top of the IBIS. It is not possible to just test the IS in the lenses against each other because once you turn IS off in the lens it turns IBIS off in the camera.
@87skarabeusz3 жыл бұрын
@@Josh_Sattin I meant how does this lenses works with the ibis? Is there some issues?
