I can't tell you what calculation Crossfire is doing when it outputs RSSI on an aux channel - you'll have to ask TBS about this. When Betaflight gets the RSSI directly from the CRSF link statistics frame it's supplied as dBm with a documented range of -130 to 0. Betaflight scales this range from 0 to 100% and that's the RSSI value presented.

im also glad you made this video, i started to get really confused about all the different rssi values, but since i had my first fail-save with crossfire after flying not more then half a km (although it was quite close to a cellphone antenna tower) after flashing the new firmware on it, im not convinced its actually the same reception as before (cuz i flew there before and never had any issues and also i was glad GPS rescue worked and the quad came back to me). about half a year ago i came to the conclusion that lq is more important then all the other values but i still left them in the osd just out of curiosity and when i did my record-distance-flight (5.34km as of now) the values stayed fairly consistent and in a range that id expect but then other times they seem to jump around randomly even if im much closer and also pretty much direct los, so .... also im starting to get very annoyed about the tango 2 telling me "sensor lost" ALL THE TIME and Ive wrote tbs about it and the only response was an explanation of what that meant (it loses signal with one or more telemetry sensors due to the fact that telemetry on the nano rx is only sent at very low tx powers) and the only solution to the problem i found so far is changing the wav file to an empty one, but that's not really a solution... even though crossfire is (in my humble opinion) far superior then anything else on the market, that's somewhat decently priced, im starting to get a bit pissed of by all the annoyances it caused me the last couple of months.
@TheAnderyes4 жыл бұрын
hey @Omegron, about your "sensor lost" problem, I think it may be related to the "telemetry lost" problem wich is solved by changing a transistor in your taranis. Crossfire now send with their transmitter the piece you have to install on the mother board of the taranis. Here a tuto about it : www.wearefpv.fr/tuto-crossfire-taranis-qx7-20180726/ (sorry it's in french but that's for sure you can find many in english). But maybe you've already done that and your problem comes from something else... And about your failsafe near a cellphone antenna, it happened to me too ! At less than 200m away. I suppose we should avoid flying around those.
@BBFPV4 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem. Did you find out which sensor it should be or is it a general telemetry problem? After I attached all antennas vertically it got a little better, but now it says telemetry lost / telemetry recovered. This short-range error is known, read the description of the Diamond antenna.
@omegron60004 жыл бұрын
Well, i sure dont hope i have to tinker with my fairly new tbs tango 2 and back when i used the taranis x9d+ with the crsf module i never had this issue (because i didnt use telemetry at all😅) And no i dont know wich sensor this causes but it would be lovely to be able to turn telemetry sensors on and off individually. Or at least disable the alarm without having to change .wav files
@BBFPV4 жыл бұрын
@@omegron6000 In openTX you can disable single sensors, but need to know which one. A friend asked me yesterday why his GPS is constantly losing satellites. Although he now has the latest and best spectrum receiver with strong telemetry transmission power 🤦♂️. We have very small problems compared. That's why I haven't tried "force Telemetry" yet, but maybe that will help. I guess that the sensor does not disappear but that it is simply no longer possible to transfer all values.

Those of us using DJI can't just ignore the weird RSSI behavior and use LQ. Only the selected RSSI channel, or default RSSI (when channel selection is disabled) goes into the MSP telemetry stream that DJI uses to display on the OSD I went the disabled RSSI channel route, and set the RSSI scaling factor in the cli to 125% which makes the new lower values seem a little more normal. FWIW, LQ is great at telling you if you're battling external RFI but at the true limit of range it may drop rather abruptly. I prefer the more gradual fall-off of Rf RSSI and find it more useful for detecting issues with Tx or Rx antennas or connectors (will see low RSSI from the moment of launch, rather than a sudden drop in LQ a few hundred feet out).
@sorrycharlie17364 жыл бұрын
This is interesting. I’ve got LQ working on DJI by selecting LQ on the RX and RSSI on betaflight OSD, but like you say it can be at 100 and them drop very suddenly, I do prefer a more gradual falloff so I can more easily gauge if I should consider turning around or gaining altitude. How did you apply the change you mention?

I will be posting many links to this video in the future. Did a bit of testing around how CRSF 150hz forced performs on the track... Was a bit surprised at how fast the LQ drops at what would be considered very close range (around 50 meters). It's a tough tradeoff, as 150hz mode was marketed toward racers (as a low latency link), however you compromise the quality of your RC data from the large number of packets that get dropped. On 50hz, the link is much stronger, but at a much higher stick to quad latency. Here's a quick test showing CRSF on the right, and ExpressLRS on the left. CRSF was on 150hz at 100mw, and ExpressLRS was on 250hz at 40mW: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaqkkGaIZ6uSjqs

I believe that the link stats frame that feeds the telemetry values from the RX gets RSSI directly from sx1272. The difference could be the due to the difference in power output between the rx and tx. Anecdotally, I think it's fair to assume that the RSSI from transmit mode on the RX device on the quad would be lower, as it transmits at 40mw at all times. The transmitter module, which has much higher output value and likely a stronger RSSI for further distances because of its increased power output. Depending on how the telemetry frames are being scheduled/transmitted around within the blackbox of the crossfire firmware, it could be that the TX module is displaying the RSSI signal, as received from the RX and vice versa.

@hueyvelcro30254 жыл бұрын
My first 3 years of FPV I used TBS stacks with the TBS OSD and I found that I rarely look even at the LQ as the power output was my safety blanket .Most of the time I am on 10mw and I am set to 500 dynamic so if it shoots up to 500mw then I pay attention to the numbers but that is not a regular occurance as it rarely passes 25 . The thing that confuses me is I swapped a couple of my stacks and have them on Betaflight 4.2 and with only the stack changed I now hit 1:70 very frequently whereas in the same area with the TBS OSD it never went below 296% . Its like it reads the telemetry different but it unsettles me so I went back to the good old 99 on a couple of them and still have 2 quads on TBS stacks . I did just buy a Unify Evo and am loving that it gives me the 300% scale and my power output but maybe its just because its what I am used to . I wish Betaflight were able to implement output power in the OSD but I wont tell you what the reply I got was in the betaflight group . Nice video .Its good to have this for people to see

@@deltageek7177 But that is what the TBS Core does also and yet there are still massive differences in the numbers I see . Same with the Unify EVO it reads the same as the Core so there is definitely a difference between how TBS devices and Betaflight 4.2 reads that telemetry . This is why I would love Betaflight to implement the power output in the OSD as it tells a bigger story in a much more simple way . For me at least using dynamic power

LOL Also is why the RSSI value is different. It's in the release notes..the way that the 'RSSI dBm' value is tracked in the firmware has changed to use actual dBM value in a range of -130 to 0, instead of the previous version's 130 to 0 range. This means that if a custom setting for osd_rssi_dbm_alarm is used, this will have to be changed to be the inversion of its previous value (e.g. 60 becomes -60) (#9550);

I flew 100 meters and it showed 1 RSSI and kept going for another 100m without failsafe. So I think there is a weird bug with BF 4.2 with the RSSI scaling. Not only for crossfire. I changed the RSSI scaling in the CLI so it kind of matches what it used to be. But if someone has a better solution for this, let me know!

Nope, a Frsky firmware change (bug). They inexplicably changed the scaling (for FPort only I think, or maybe the ACCST 2.1 or ACCESS firmware - don't remember) in one the receiver firmware releases. This has nothing to Betaflight, and will also show the reduced scale if you go back to older Betaflight versions with that receiver. You could flash an older receiver firmware to revert to the old behavior.

Bruce Luckcuck ah ok. That explains. Starting to hate FrSky more and more. Why would they change that without us notifying about that. Ah well. Need to make the change to Crossfire I think :) Thanks for the info!

Niggo FPV is this 99 forever basically just reflecting that LQ is > 0:99 and any drop below 99 means you are in that 4Hz, about to lose signal, danger zone?

Just got a crossfire micro tx starter kit. Got everything set up, mounted etc...watched all your videos and cant figure out my issue. When I first plug in my quad, i'll have 2/100 and 50ish rssi. After a few seconds of just sitting there, it goes to 1/100 with 30-35 rssi. Tried a different rx, higher power, different antenna, checked the region and freq...all appears to be correct. I have yet to fly with it this way because I feel I'll failsafe in less than 100 yards! I updated the tx, rx, and even struggled through an open tx update. Nothing has helped. I also took the module apart to make sure the ufl was still intact. Did I get a bad unit??? Little frustrated. Never had crossfire before and so far ive got a pretty bad first impression of it

Hi ! Joshua i have a question for you , (Because your the best at it ) i ´ m a big fan of the crossfire system because of it reliability and Link quality but my question is, i want to fly my mfd crosswind 1950 mm ( big plane) with a eagle tree vector flight controller in sbus so it means i will need at least 4-5 outputs for 3 caméras( vidéo switcher ) plus a feyutech 3 d gimbal and navigation lights so , what would be the best crossfire receiver with enough outputs for long range fright the diversity one or others . NThanks joshua

So there's something I guess I don't understand. Because of the asymmetrical Tx power of the Crossfire TX Micro (up to 1w) and the nano Rx (I believe only 10mw) it seems to me that you will lose telemetry long before your LQ falls to RFMD 1 and 70% LQ and in fact I've been trying to test this and that's what I find. I was simply trying to see of my audible warnings in my radio were working but those logical switches never get tripped before I lose telemetry. I guess using the telemetry in your OpenTX radio isn't very useful for that reason.
@JoshuaBardwell3 жыл бұрын
You will lose telemetry that's correct. But the lq comes from the receiver directly to the FC. So it doesn't need telemetry to display lq in the OSD.
@Siamect4 жыл бұрын
But you can have good LQ just after taking off even if your antenna is broken. 10 seconds later you fall out of the sky with an LQ below your waistline and into the your neighbor's never ever cleaned, monitor infested swimming pool. I always check the dBm before taking off...

Hi. i have just purchased the crossfire nano, think it is the same as micro v2, so do not have to put rssi on an aux channel, but i cannot set the lq option in my dji goggles even though selected on the osd, so rssi value only or nothing, not keen on the the low rssi values everyone seems to be getting with the newer crossfire modules. i had to re adjust the scale for my r9 in the cli to match osd rssi, but that was easy as the telemetry scale was easy to match by looking at the rssi reading on the telemetry screen on the radio, but on crossfire this just reads 99 all the time and does not move. for any suggestions welcome. thanks.

Very nice explanation, but I'm still a bit unsure about what you said at about 12:02. Okay, so I've fell down from mode 2 to mode 1. Will LQ then show me 1:X where X is the number in percent which you said should be above about 70? Excuse me for the ill informed question, but I just got my Tango 2, and I haven't really installed my RX yet (just connected it) - and I've never used Crossfire before. Is the X number the "total link qual" across all three modes, or can I expect to have a full range from 0-100 in each mode? As in, what will X be, at the time I drop from 2 to 1 and 1 to 0? Thanks, dude.
@edfroxt72943 жыл бұрын
I have rssi 60-70% when flying near myself, after 100-150 meters away my lq drops to 1:100 and rssi 40-50%. Frequency is set correctly for my region.

@edfroxt72943 жыл бұрын
@@shuraim8675 No, the problem still there. My antenna is placed in front of quad on tpu mount, pretty far from carbon. This is on my typical 5inch freestyle quad, I`m not flying far on it and failsafe never happened, but still this annoys me
@shuraim86753 жыл бұрын
@@edfroxt7294 Yeah, you needn't look at the RSSI. See the LQ because it's more accurate than the RSSI. You're good till 1:70 and return as soon as the lq hits 1:70
