(I think SM top speed is 27.5mph whilst the cars ride is 40mph & test track can reach 64.7mph!) What makes SM scary is how dark it is, causing unpredictability, how loud it is, how sharp the turns are, how bumpy of a ride it is & the seats! The one at DL is much smoother than this one and the DL car makes you feel MUCH safer!

I’ve had the pleasure of actually being on that ride WHILE it broke down. 😂😂 I was on the Omega side (the side rode in this video) and we actually broke down RIGHT before the first hill at 0:53. We were stuck there for about 10-15 minutes and when the lights came on it was amazing. We got to see so many carts on the Alpha side go past and we just kept waving at them. It was hilarious. We also loved waving at the People Mover whenever they’d pass. I’d like to think we created a core memory for so many people that day. 😂

I remember riding this coaster back in 1988 and it was completly dark in the ride, the only lights were strips along the track and I think that made the ride even more fun because you couldn't see what was coming up and it would suprise you no matter how many times you rode it. I wish they take it back to when it was like that since it would make the ride awesome to ride again.

Thunder Mountain is probably better with those aspects in mind, since it focuses on those elements more. The drops on this can be fairly aggressive depending on where you sit (generally tame in the front, but quite intense in in the back).

Here's a few tidbits of info about Space Mountain...Fyi, I'm a retired, in 2016, Engineer with Lockheed Martin here in Orlando but I just finished a two year stint (I resigned in February) in Security at WDW and I worked in Custodial at Magic Kingdom back in '74 - '75 my Sr. year in H.S. The current speed of Space Mountain is 28 MPH (Fyi, 7 Dwarfs Mine Train is 32 MPH), but back in '74/'75 when the ride hadn't yet opened the cast members were allowed free test rides during their lunch breaks...at that time the Engineers had the speed at 50 MPH...I heard at the time the engineers also did test runs at 55 and 60 mph. When the ride opened in '75 it was set at 42 mph and it was completely blacked out inside so the girders could not be seen at all. After a couple "incidents" the speed was lowered several times (down to 35 mph, then 32 mph and finally to today's 28 mph) and the lights were turned up several times so the girders can easily be seen (so as to hopefully keep people from trying to stand up). Needless to say a blacked out SM at 50 MPH was a hair raising ride that you felt lucky to have survived...the G forces I remember were pretty damn forceful.

Space mountain isn’t really a fast ride, if I’m not mistaken the cars ride and test track are almost 2 times faster! Kinda crazy how they managed to make this one of their “scariest” rides!! Work smarter, not harder!

@@annadefranco You should ride Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris, it takes you to the bottom of a cannon and then shoots you up at 50mph. The one in Paris is much faster than any of the other Space Mountain's and it has 3 inversions, the only problem is the theming isn't as immersive or good as the other parks due to a 'bleugh' Star Wars skin, but this one is more of a thrill ride. He's all about the experience and space mountain does a great job at providing a memorable experience. Go to cedar point if you're looking for more.
@trackmaster1520026 жыл бұрын
Not true at all. Walt Disney helped change the roller coaster industry and was indeed a big supporter. He hired Arrow Dynamics to make the first ever steel coaster -- Matterhorn Bobsleds. And he personally purchased a rescuing stake in Arrow Dynamics when they were going under. Without Arrow, we don't have a lot of the innovations that we have today. He just lived in a different time, and died young. He died before roller coasters started doing what they do today. If he was alive today, who knows, he'd probably be a roller coaster enthusiast himself.

I love this ride. I got on it about 10 times. It was so fun. The dark lights made it look so much cooler.

I wish the ride had more speakers. You can almost never hear the music, but the music is so good!

Surprising how just making the lights turn off make the whole ride THAT more intense.
