Wow this brings back memories! I remember seeing this game in the lobby of a movie theater when I was 19 back in 1985. Frontiers had only been released 2 years earlier and both Journey and the album were among the most popular in music. Still even back then it was kind of a cheesy game.

@@dreadlegend7365 This game was damn hard, the controls were pretty shitty and it had way too much shit moving around on the screen at once. It wasn't hard in a challanging way, it was just difficult because it was poorly made. Without the digitized heads and music from Journey nobody would have played the damn thing. Was it fun? I remember playing it as a kid, but what I remember most was I would always die FAST.

Quote from the Killer List of Video Games: "Originally, this game was not to have the band Journey in it. It would have a digital camera created by Ralph Baer, the creator of the Magnavox Odyssey home console systems that would take a picture of the player's face and put it on the character. After some people used unmentionable parts of their body as character heads during tests, this was dropped."

During the stage performance, Don't Stop Believin' is supposed to play from a tape inside the machine. The proper emulation of this game should play it from a digital audio file, a mono WAV. This game came about as a result of the Data Age Journey Escape game for the Atari 2600.

The music that would have been played in the silent moments would actually have been done from a cassette, which would be the actual song "Separate Ways", and not a computer rendition. One question though, anybody have any idea as to what song the music used when a round is successfully completed was?

A lot of the games would be Jamma titles in Astro City and Egret cabinets, but I’d also like to offer some deep cuts in gaming, including this! How can the cabinet be made so someone in a wheelchair or mobility scooter can play it? Can the cassette player in the cabinet be replaced by an MP3 player? Cheers.

I loved playing this game in the 80's I thought it was so cool they had "Real" Pictures of the Band Members Heads and Played "Real Music" as I called it and I thought it was real cool when it played actual Journey Music and not Electronic version of their music in the bonus round where you protect them from the fans. MAME can't emulate the caset tape audio so it's not the same as the real arcade machine but still cool, they should have made it so it plays a MP3 file or something, in setting for the game they could have MP3 file to play at bonus round..
@JinzoCrash
@JinzoCrash 8 жыл бұрын
Well, the uploader said he took it out for copyright reasons. Was that how it worked though? It played a tape recording of their song? Is it like Q*Bert, where instead of a kicker for Coily at the bottom of the machine, it played music that wasn't in the game's programming?
@dallase1
@dallase1 8 жыл бұрын
I kicker is something mechanical that can't be emulated with software unless maybe it could play a real low Bass not for those that have a Sub on their PC or on a tablet or phone it would activate the vibration when Colly fell off so that is different also why would it play a song for Colly falling off ? If you are playing Journey at home why could you not then be able to emulate the cassette tape with a MP3 file? I played Journey on MAME for DOS and Windows and wondered why they did not have the option to use a MP3 file of Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).
@dallase1
@dallase1 8 жыл бұрын
In the Bonus Round it played a real Journey Song off a looping Cassette tape the song was Separate Ways Worlds Apart.
@zerobyte802
@zerobyte802 6 жыл бұрын
MAME supports playing Separate Ways via the sample system. It’s basically an MP3 of the song. In the real arcade version, the tape was a continuous loop of tape that just resumed playing the song wherever it was the last time the instruments got stolen. The last time I played this on MAME, it always started at the beginning of the song. I really enjoyed this game as a kid and would always feed it a token or two.

The members of journey couldn't just buy instruments to replace the ones they lost? So when i was a kid in the 80s I didn't know who Journey was and this game baffled the hell out of me but I'd stand there and watch (usually adults) play it. I rarely saw kids my age play it. Back then you didn't have SoundHound or cell phones or internet. You had to be lucky enough to see the info somehow else or follow music which I didn't

I've played this game, and it is SUPER hard! The first part of each round is easy, but then it gets hard when you have to start shooting. I think the trick for the second half of the levels is to do rapid fire and stand in one place or move left to right and make your way up while doing rapid fire (at least it works for steve perry's). Be careful of those blinking things though when they get close to you, they will touch you or you will touch them as you're tring to clear the others, and you lose a life! Jonathan cain's is harder in regards to getting to the instrument as those you may hit one of those planks as you jump down to another platform or when you're starting the level! Steve Smith's is the easiest to clear for the first round since it's just jumping on the drums, but be sure to jump on all of the drums twice once you have jsut one last red drum to turn blue, as you will get a 1k point bonus after turning that final red drum blue! ross is all about timing and direction. you should wait until you're at a certain height then jump either left or right (depending on where you are) to the next stump. Neal's is perhaps the hardest since it's all about precision (mainly because it's like operation - you hit the wall, you're done!) so pay CAREFUL attention to where you are and try to not press an arrow key for too long or to short of time. staying and one place and doing rapid fire will help you get more points to get to that extra life. The final part, i haven't even gotten to yet, so i have no advice on how to beat it!

The original concept was to allow people to put pictures of themselves inside the arcade game, which for 1983 would have definitely been innovative for it's time. Unfortunately, during a location test a man took indecent photos and put them on the machine. This was enough to cause Bally Midway to retool it as a Journey game that used the heads of the Journey band members rather than random images of players.
