That was super informative, and great to hear how dentistry has evolved! I am currently applying to dental school, but I feel so much resistance in my heart because I'm not sure if it is worth it. I feel like it won't be the career that I am imagining, and the student loans really terrify me. Thanks for your videos, they are so helpful in being a reality check.

Has your heart changed much about going to dental school ? There is so much unknown in dentistry - from patients who hate dentist, to competition, to emotional/physical toll - so I don't blame you for having the resistance, especially if you are the first dentist in your family. Don't overthink it, just focus on one step at a time. Dentistry is subjective and varies by practice philosophy like even see how different Joyce and her mom had such drastic practice philosophy. I have shadowed practice/dentist that have left me really depressed and question the whole career to shadowing other dentist where afterwards I couldn't wait to be back to shadow more. Don' get scared about student loans. There are many strategies to pay it off (military, National Health Service Corps scholarship, etc.) There are very few careers where you get the ability to make a positive impact just by using your hands to ease a patient's sever toothache.

Hi Joyce new sub here ❤️ looking to go into dentistry but medicine is my back up. Dentistry has been my dream but its looking increasingly less fruitful. Would you still recommend going into dentistry nowadays and in the coming years? How did the virus affect dental work both in the short and long term?
@Joycethedentist4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Welcome! I personally love dentistry but you are right, it has become less fruitful. It really depends what your goals are. Work life balance? Making a lot of money? Loving what you do? You can still make a good living however, with the cost of student loans it's not like the good ol' days. Of course there are always options like living farther out ... but for me, I would rather make less and live in a nice area. The virus has not been good for dental offices but we are still in the thick of it. I've personally been back for over a month and had a record breaking month. I'm not sure if its just my area or if this is consistent with all practices. At this rate my office will be just fine but if there is another closure it will hurt again.

Joyce the Dentist thank you so much for replying. All of the above attracted me to dentistry, including the fact that ive loved the idea of setting up a business (I helped my mum with hers and fell in love) as well as my artistic side that will get to shine in dentistry as opposed to any other profession. I’ve been working towards it for the past five years. Luckily for me i live and plan to study in Ireland so student loans aren’t really a concern for me. I just worry about the competition of dentistry and if I’ll be able to keep my head above water starting a practice in the next 7 years or so

I know several female M.D.’s who don’t work very much. They practice medicine as a hobby.
