I live really close to Ian Curtis's house, every day I'm walking past his house, sometimes I go to his house and think about him and start talking to him, It gives me so much peace. I still cannot believe how he took his own life in that house. You can't get into that house and also no one is living in the house, but you still can see the decorations in the window, and the upstairs room's window is half open, full of spider webs. There are lots of things about him around Macclesfield. Rest in peace, Ian Curtis.

@@Vibeagain I will agree. that “ a ly deoressed poet” is objectively true, BUT I take extreme exception to the word “JUST” before that. While this is clearly subjective, there can not be a clear indisputable alternative. But it does not take deep study to know that overall there were many exceptional, and often outstanding gifts & talents Ian had. His early work was brilliant and original. His early loss is a tremendous loss of a remarkable man who faced an early death with dignity & grace. He knew he was near to losing his life. He tried as best as is possible under the circumstances to minimize every one’s grief and suffering. He did not fall apart. He made a difficult, but arguably optimal decision, given his limited options. I do not judge him. I respect him and believe he was a real man and a brilliant lead. Not too shabby to say the least. And far from “just” anything. RIP Ian Curtis. You are still loved. Imagine if he had been able to actively perform for forty more years. One of Rock’s most tragic losses. YMMV but that’s my story and i am sticking to it. I hope I was able to wake a couple dozen fans to Curtis’ amazing talent unabated by illness until near the end.

When you've seen the movie 'Control', you always seem to feel that this song (together with Ceremony) is somehow related to Curtis' life itself, and a projection into other people's lives, to emphasize the fact you as a human being are capable of / are worthy of having a life with a (small) social circle, you can support each other, you can keep an eye on, you can love, you can nurture ... And that in the end, there are people who 'walk away' / 'fade away' in silence, without any post-recognition.

Hi Ian I saw joy Division in Bradford supporting the Buzzcocks when I was 15, I was glued to the spot I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I'd never been like other kids and even up to a few years ago I always felt different, never happy but never totally depressed. I'm sat in bed typing this at 56 years old sat next to my new wife, my first wife who's expecting my first child, keep going it's alright to be who you are, we're all different but we're never alone. Good luck buddy

People, don't let this this song upset you, don't let it get you down. Let it make you strong. And let it make you stronger. Let it wash over you and then near the end, let yourself grow with the song. Rise up. Rise up strong and rise up to be the strong person you have been made to be. It is not about despair. It is about strength and being strong for the future.

I've been struggling from a very severe anxiety and panic attacks for a few years because my heart was broken a few times and because I'm very poor and can't take care of myself, and there is war where I live, and other dangers. Sometimes all I feel is pain, day after day, and my body has started to react to it. All I'm clinging to is faith. All that is helping is faith, bits of love of from people who care and yes, maybe music. When I remembered this song I thought yeah, it might help, it might actually give me something. I don't care if anyone came here because of Stranger Things. It brought people to a powerful song, written by the very talented Ian Curtis, who took his own life after battling a double whammy of depression and worsening epileptic seizures. It brought you to a great video by Anton Corbijn (who also directed Control, an excellent film & I highly recommend it). There's nothing wrong or bad about being exposed to great music or art, no matter how you came across it.

Their music does not blind you, or try to be ignorant about your negative feelings... Except, it gives you kind of understanding, and feeling, how Ian and so many other young people suffered, and you are not alone. Despite his inner turmoil, he always tried to convince listener, not to walk away in silence...

This song is something from Ian Curtis's soul. The constant drum beat to me feels like the endless monotony of everyday life. Waking up every morning and getting out of bed to face a world that hates you. "Your confusion, my illusion, worn like a mask of self hate. Confronts and then dies" this line really hit home for me. It makes me think of the anxiety of just normal social interactions and the constant facade of happiness to mask the self-hate. This song is not a cry for help, like some might say. This is a goodbye, a final echo in the darkness. Goodbye, Ian.

I feel like every sound of this song hits my chest and I can't stop thinking about how my life is so miserable and I don't have anyone to talk about how I feel. Everyone feels so upset because they can't go out and see their friends and makes me realize how normal it is for me that I've been locked up in my room for so long just listening to music to finally be able to feel something. God I know that there are so many beautiful things in this world but it seems that they were not made for me and I'm so tired
@matthewbowen5174 жыл бұрын
I think you'd be amazed by just how many people there are like you, god knows you could be writing about the first 18 years of my life (I'm 20 now). Perhaps you are suffering from Cptsd? Look it up. That feeling of shame as if you don't deserve the good things in life, when you absolutely do. I decided to go on a trip to vietnam with my brother last year, and it really opened my eyes to a different way of living. I actually felt accepted for the first time in my life, I was able to walk down the streets without feeling on edge or targeted. There was a feeling of warmth there that I hadn't experienced back in England. I didn't need to try and communicate with people, they came to me. And this is how I met my first girlfriend, and I stayed with her family for three months there. It gave me a glimpse into the idea that i was lovable, that I could receive love. That was an alien feeling to me and it took time to adjust. For much of my life I thought it just wouldn't happen, you know, I didn't deserve it. When we're stuck inside the walls of our bedrooms for so long, our world becomes so small. But you have to be able to receive that love, you have to be able to accept when the beautiful things come your way, know that you deserve it. And know that YOU are a beautiful thing in this world. Goodluck on your journey.

Tears in my eyes : The lyrics of “Atmosphere” are both abstract and deeply emotional, with themes of isolation and melancholy. Ian Curtis’s distinctive baritone vocals lend the song a haunting quality that resonates with listeners. The music itself is characterized by its atmospheric and ethereal quality, driven by Peter Hook’s basslines, Bernard Sumner’s guitar, and Stephen Morris’s drumming. “Atmosphere” is a testament to Joy Division’s ability to create a mood and atmosphere that draws listeners into a world of dark, emotional intensity. It’s a song that has left a lasting impact on the music world and is often cited as one of the band’s most powerful and enduring compositions.

Ian obviously had a very tender soul. During his short life, he gave more then he could handle. My take on Ian's life is that he was not a rockstar, but a poet who never asked for fame, only to be understood. Joy Division could never be more then what it was. His demise was decided the day Joy Division became what they were.
