It was only crude because most of the fighters were grapplers who dabbled in striking. But, Bas Rutten had much better striking skills than most of today's UFC fighters. It wasn't just his kicks, it was his elite skill of combining kicks and punches. one followed the other. A kick was immediately followed by punches and vice versa.

I boxed from age 8-25 and have been in 3 legit fights outside of the gym. Every single time, the strike that ended it was a palm heel ora wrist bone strike. I know better than to punch anybody bone on bone with my fists. Not looking to break any more bones, but i can tell you palm strikes are deadly effective and relatively safe to throw. Open your hands up, put them out front, 1/3rd extention, and you can shoot one up into the chin or throat with lightning speed.

The best thing about the Palm strike is that it is so powerful because unlike a punch where you have to deal with the movement and possible injury of the wrist, you have solid bone from the wrist down to the elbow to back up the heel of the Palm when you strike.

The reason that's so important is the difference is the difference between a heel kick and punching with your toes which like punching with your hands you would need to train to even do with power safely. A palm is more like a stomp than a punch and no matter who in your weight class stomps you it will be bad.

0:40 For those wondering, the movie is Con Air starring Nicolas Cage (not Steven Segal). Cage delivers the deadly fictional palm strike at the start of the movie, which is what gets him indicted for murder. Cage's character supposedly learned the technique while serving as a Green Beret. Con Air was super popular when it came out, and projected the nose strike myth into pop culture pretty hard (although i don't think its the first movie to have the nose strike).

The palm strike is used in Japane Jiu-Jitsu and I think it is the best for most head strikes. I also think Japanese Jiu-Jitsu should be mentioned more. This style was not so much represented in the early days of the UFC. It was in Pride tho. It has a good foundation to transition into MMA. It has a standing element, there is throwing and submissions. Tho it also teaches how to deal with knife fights and such. It really depens where you train aswell tho. My old teacher was also a corps marine guy and had a competitive mindset. I trained in the NL tho, so our trainer also added kickboxing and boxing elements. As far as I know our school was one of the few that also taught how to throw low kicks and elbows, use ground and pound ect. Which I did not see implemented in other schools (and was not allowed during competition). I do like the palm strikes and I do not understand why we don't see them a lot in MMA. I have broken my knuckles in both hands. I think the palmstrike should be used for most head strikes. Even when you miss, you can easily transition to grabbing or pushing to close or create distance. Use fist for body shots and the temple.

Palm strikes do work. I hit a man one single time with my palm back in 2004 and almost killed him. Broke his orbital socket and his eye came out a little. I was convicted of malicious wounding and went to prison too. It was pretty scary because when I hit him, he didn’t fall down right away he just stood there with his eye messed up. He started mumbling and making a snoring sound. And then he sat down on the ground and slumped over forward. I thought I killed him. Scared the shit out of me. I really wasn’t trying to do something like that. I didn’t feel like I swung very hard. That was three years in Greensville correctional center for me.

@jessehines40444 жыл бұрын
Overall palm strikes do deliver more power. This is where it gets confusing though for most people; they think since the knuckles with their smaller surface area concentrate the force more that it equals more power. This is a fallacy. The punch transfers more power lengthwise (increasing the chance for a cut or a crack on the area struck) due to the higher concentration of force but not more in totality. The palm strike delivers more power width wise creating a greater push back and stunning effect than the punch.

The only problem with palm strikes compared to standard knuckle punches is that they lack the sufficient range to do certain long-range punches as seen by Conor McGregor. Also Palm strikes aren't as useful for striking certain areas like the solar plexus. Knuckle punches are good for hitting soft spots wow Palm strikes are better at getting harder ones.

@speedy51184 жыл бұрын
That’s why u move into the palm strike as you do it,creating more force but also closing the range.but yes u are right there is a lack of range and punches can be more useful however one palm strike to the nose can seriously fuck someone up
@jessehines40444 жыл бұрын
The "lack of range" you're alluding to is about 2-3 inches. Given the advantages of palm strikes compared to punches that little more range isn't enough to make it a worth while trade off. Additionally, people get confused when it comes to comparing the power between the two. They think because the knuckles with their smaller surface area concentrates the force more than the palm heel does that punches are more powerful. This is a fallacy. It's not that punches are more powerful it's that they transfer their force in the opposite way than palms do. The punch with its higher concentration of energy transfers force LENGTHWISE, creating a higher chance for cuts and cracks. The palm strike transfers force WIDTHWISE creating a greater pushing and stunning effect. This is immediately evident when you hit the bag with both. The palm pushes the bag back further than the punch does.

I seen that you said to to keep your fingers together and to do finger, hand and wrist strengthening exercises but what else can someone do to prevent an injury to the fingers or wrist when palm striking? Also what are some good finger strengthening exercises? Thanks.
