I went to a chiropractor with severe lower back pain. He told me the bones in my pelvis were out of alignment and could only be manipulated rectally. Of course I was skeptical at first but I went ahead with the treatment because it was covered by insurance. Mostly it felt like an aggressive prostate exam. After about 50 treatments I did start to feel better. I never did figure out how he was able to keep both his hands on my shoulders during the treatments.

I've read many good reviews about chiropractors, so me having upper back pain decided to give it a try. On the first visit the chiropractor said my spine is the issue, even tho I have brought MRI reports indicating no issues with the spine. After a couple of visits with no improvements I decided to see a physio therapist, which he immediately discovered that my back ribs are causing the pain. However I still went to my next session to the chiropractor, I mentioned that its not the spine it was the ribs which he replied: Yes I know, we are trying to fix it" so I said: but you told me its the spine? His face went red and I decided to never go back there again. A liar and a thief.

In 2017 I broke my back, herniated 2 disks and fractured a vertebrae jumping a concrete spillway on my dirtbike. Couldnt move my right leg at all, i dont like calling it paralyzed but idk what else to call it- Went to a chiropractor, he immediately ordered an MRI, went over the direction of my disk bulge, explained deeply why it hurts my leg so bad and was a little too honest about how bad the injury was. I shit you not man my first session I needed to basically be carried in to his office, by session 5 I was standing up straight and didn’t need to Uber anymore (could drive again), was 80% physical therapy and 20% “adjustments”. All of these are really good for you if you work hard labor or fight for a living are your a athlete. Ya a physical therapy is really good also I would say go to therapy before having surgery most cases therapy will fix it surgery should only be a last decision sometimes it’s necessary. Remember if your lower back or neck or hip is thrown out a place it’s going to throw other things out of place and make you more unhealthy so what Joe is saying is very wrong chiropractic care will line you back up, straighten you out you , with that and physical therapy together remember you have to strengthen the weak part again after you fix it, really it’s common since don’t see how people don’t get it or understand it if you’ve gone through real pain in your life , and some real hard fights , you know chiropractic care is very good, relieves pain helps to straighten you back out

now, imagine an alternate reality where your friend did not go to that chiropractor for that whole year and instead he just rested and lightly exercised. would he have gotten better? probably! correlation does not mean causation. if chiropractic stuff was any useful, it wouldn't be too hard to prove its healing capabilities with some controlled studies. alternative medicine that works is called medicine. when an "alternative" technique/method is scientifically proven to be helpful, medicine adopts it into its repertoire.

I thought I over did it, and after day 7 the pain moved around in the upper region, and actually started affecting my sleep on day 7. It simply felt like some needed popped, therefore I made an appointment for a chiropractor. After home remedies of having my wife walk my back, using a foam roller, trying everything to simply relieve tension or pressure, nothing work. I sought a chiropractor, explained my situation, and within 15 minutes the pain was relieved and felt that tension removed. He gave additional adjustments, but concluded this was a simple adjustment and no further appointments was needed unless the symptoms continued. No issues since.

I asked him if I would need to come back and he said "Nah, just be careful with it." I've had some problems here and there, but nothing like that. Would definitely go back if it happened again, though. This lady pins all chiropractors as some crazy cult that all believe in what that original guy did. As a chiropractor, I understand about the history of chiro. It has a checkered past, but so do all healing techniques, including medicine. The original theories of chiropractic are obviously debunked, but there are chiro's like me who really understand the spine and how it works and how it can go wrong. And then it's important to utilize techniques and procedures that are scientifically sound and make sense. There are crazy folks in every profession. You simply have to find a chiro who is science based and uses traditional chiro/physical techniques that actually work and help. Just don't put all chiro's in the same camp and through the preverbal "baby out with the bathwater". Just a thought Joe from a BIG FAN!!

How can we distinguish which ones follow actual science and which ones follow chiropractic pseudoscience? And wouldn't a science based chiro just be a physical therapist? Same. I injured my back in hs and my osteopathic sports dr who x-rayed me just loaded me up on codeine for 1 month. I lived with chronic back pain for years until one day in college I was offered a free adjustment. It’s like I was reborn! Not only was a sonogramed, my Chiro showed me why I am in pain, what she will do about it and also how the rest of my body was compensating and in contestant tension on some muscles. After three visits, my back pain disappeared, my headaches and fatigue too. Decades later, after running a lot, my hip gave out on me. I went to go see a doctor in Miami. She suggested I go see a chiro first, and if that doesn’t work, come back to discuss expensive and invasive hip surgery, at 33yo... after two session I was back running. So come tell me chiropractors don’t work! This lady is just making shit up and rogan read one article and sounds like people who claim psychology is a pseudoscience based on some errors, mean ignoring the fact that it was psychiatrist MDs who performed the invasive lobotomies.... I also had my ears popped by a chiro once too and my gf said I have since stopped grinding my teeth...

Gary Lewis; You are so right!!! First off I'm going preface what I'm about to say by saying there are good and bad in ever profession; From chiropractors to mechanics, to lawyers and MD's and I've had good and bad experiences with all of those. Thankfully the 1st Chiropractor I meet was truly great, I'll explain about 7 years after I had moved away from living near his practice I slipped a disc in my low back, So I initially went to this guy he had referred me to a few years earlier, With him I would only get better to a point and be almost back to square one, So I got a referral to another Chiropractor and in my first appointment he does x-rays and tells my right leg is 14mm shorter than my left but doesn't really do anything to address that, So after seeing him for about 3 weeks and him using some gadget me. I say screw this go and see my old chiropractor and I will say it took a while my initial problem the slipped disc took about 4-5 months and he treated me by doing a number of things (he doesn't use gadgets like some do) 1st I got fitted with custom orthotics and a 14mm lift to wear in my right shoe and for about 4+ months I received traction and massage therapy and spinal manipulation IE regular adjustments but it took 4+ months before he was finally able to adjust my lower back and was pain free and no longer walking like a duck haha. I will add since I am at in tune with my body so to speak and I have a problem I'll know if I need to see a chiropractor. Also being physically active I know what exercises and stretching to do to keep from having problems, I also try get regular massage as well. I will also add that a lot of professional sports teams have Chiropractors on there staff. Chiropractic education is a LONG WAY from it's origins!!!. Bill Philips founder of EAS supplements and publisher of Muscle Media Magazine did a very in depth article on Chiropractic and the depth and breadth of there education. Foot Note Body builder Franco Columbo was/is a Chiropractor Jack Lalane practiced chiropractic but didn't But didn't let it be known early in his career/life because of the stigma that still followed it back then.

The problem is that because it's not accepted by the AMA, there isn't as much standardization and training that happens before they're certified. There was a big antitrust lawsuit the AMA because of how they treated chiropractors. What we need to do is accept that there are real benefits that can occur from chiropractors but they need better training in order to offer those benefits more consistently. A chiropractic technique was what reversed my hiatal hernia, something that doctors said wasn't possible without surgery. It's totally changed my life and I am hugely thankful to them for it

@Cream Cheese you're right that I still have a bit of GERD, but chiropractors reversed my hernia (through free content), while my doctors told me I would need surgery or live with it for life, which would probably give me stomach or esophageal cancer later on. That's shit advice and now my hernia is non-existent and has been for months. I used to get reflux multiple times a day, had difficulty swallowing, pain in my chest, shortness of breath, pain in my back, abdomen, panic attacks that sent me to the ER. After the self adjustment and other dietary advice from chiros, I have NONE of those symptoms aside from a bit of tenderness in my sternum when I don't take some acid with my last meal. The medicine and advice docs gave worsened my symptoms and would have made me dependent on something that was actively damaging my body. Even if my hernia comes back I can just do the adjustment again. I no longer have to watch what I eat and avoid all acidic or spicy food,I don't need to use an incline pillow to sleep on at night,I don't have to avoid meals after 6pm, I can take naps after eating - these were all things I had to avoid or do when I was listening to advice by doctors, and my life was shit and my GERD was so much worse! People they think the medical industry is the ONLY way to find healing. Well after many visits to the doctor for various ailments, I've realized that they are good at managing symptoms, NOT healing or curing. I've often been prescribed medicine that EXACERBATED my condition or gave me new problems! This is what happens when healthcare and pharmaceutical industry kickbacks are so closely related. I will still visit doctors but i will no longer take their word as gospel, because they've been wrong when working with me so many times. The worst part is that the medical industry convinces people that they are doomed and need to take pills their whole life, or get organs removed, when in reality for many conditions there are a host of other treatments you can try first that may well produce the healing you're looking for

Point of view from a chiropractors son. I’ve known many chiropractors and haven’t met any that claim to fix hearing or anything crazy. Not saying there isn’t some out there. Just like preachers, I’ve never met a crazy one that claims to heal people by touching them. But there are some weirdo preachers that claim to heal people while they scream and flip around on the ground. Along with weirdo chiropractors that claim they can fix anything with an adjustment. In a lot of professions there will be a few extremist people. The entire idea of chiropractic, Atleast now, and this is what I love, is that you go to the hospital for back pain and they give you a pain pill but that doesn’t fix the problem only the symptom. Where as you go to a chiropractor and they try a more natural way to fix the back pain then just giving pills. I love medical doctors, I also love chiropractors. They both have advantages and disadvantages. They look at problems in their own way, which is the way they were taught to. I don’t discredit any chiropractor or MD, DO, most are actually in it to help people. Also one more thing that most people don’t know. Chiropractors go to college the same amount of time as a medical doctor, 8 years, in that time they study the exact same stuff but leave out prescription medicine. They both receive an undergraduate degree, receive a 4 year healthcare degree, obtain state and National license by passing the exam. The Doctor of Chiropractic focuses intensively on anatomy, physiology, and human biology. They must continue to pass education requirements every year to keep their license. They both study anatomy/embryology, biochemistry/chemistry, diagnosis, neurology, microbiology, public health, physiology, pathology, obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics, psychology/psychiatry, and X-ray. Both have to have over 500 hours of manual medicine training. While DC’s study 2x as much Anatomy, MDs study 3x as much public health. DCs also don’t have to do a 1 year internship. But they still study/practice under other DCs for so many hours but they do it while still in school, don’t know the exact hour requirement. Total hours to become a Doctor of chiropractic 2,419 Total hours to become a Medical Doctor 2,047

I never really thought chiropractors were legit but my wife had sudden neck and rear skull pain so bad it would cause her to almost pass out or throw up. She couldn't stand or be upright for longer than 30 min and couldn't turn her head. We went to 2 different ERs and a family doctor. They all did scans and tests and came back negative. They gave her pain meds and told her to just take it easy and to come back if it didn't go away in a few weeks. After two months they scheduled a neurologist for 2 months later but in the meantime she saw a chiropractor twice a week. She was back to normal before the neurology appointment so we cancelled it. She just does a maintenance visit to the chiropractor once a month now. I don't blame people for being skeptical or not trusting chiropractors....but in this case the doctors failed.

I had crazy back pain in high school due to a broken bed and a heavy back pack and slouching (6 feet tall and overweight) so half of my senior I spent going to a chiropractor in my city after school and it did help. I didn’t slouch any more and my lower back pain went away (it was so bad that I couldn’t even stay in my seat during class, I had to go for walks) so maybe I’m just an outlier but it worked for me. Unfortunately, the job I got after high school was labor intensive and my boss didn’t care and I didn’t know how to lift heavy stuff and I ended up throwing my back out and I have had back pain ever since. I haven’t gone to a chiropractor for it but if I had the time I would.

This was covered in the video, they accept that the one thing that chiropractic manipulation has the potential to do is relieve pressure from damaged nerves. It is the other outlandish claims they have a problem with. More to the point, if you need this kind of issue dealt with then there are better-trained, properly qualified physical therapists who can both fix the nerve issues and design correct exercise recovery programs to help prevent a recurrence. Certainly, the medical profession is imperfect and continually updating itself, but there are literally professionals who help people to walk again after horrific injuries and surgery. I'd rather be treated by them than someone who is poorly trained in a field with little to no evidence of its assertions.

So if you wanna say that it doesn't work, provide some evidence that it doesn't work. For example: probably 4000 years ago, they didn't have actual studies that show that physical exercise is good for the heart etc. Now if a guy 4000 years ago, was "prescribing" physical exercise - it doesn't mean he was talking bullshit just because there was still no actual formal studies showing that physical exercise is good for the heart. Chiropractic was developed out of that chaos cause people were taking “medicine” that would literally kill them, and yet somehow were deemed as “medical treatments”. Claims are claims and results are results. You’re gonna tell someone that went through a life changing experience that chiropractic doesn’t work? Good luck with that. Not only most schools provide 9 months of continuous human cadaver dissection, but a BUNCH of medical science is taught ranging from clinical laboratory skills, clinical pathology, pharmacology, bone pathology, etc, and in the state of Oregon, you can even take electives to perform minor surgeries with your chiro license. They are exceptionally trained to distinguish between conditions that they can treat and conditions that need to be treated by other medical professionals. Do priests have a scientific/medical background to treat patients? No. Do chiropractors? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Lester Brunt my guy, those are two different degrees, two different licenses, two different governing boards advocating for their own profession. The biggest different between a PT and a DC (chiropractor), although laws can differ state by state, is that DCs can “adjust” people which means they are able to apply physical impulse to move restricted joints. There is real science behind that “crack” my guy. Both DCs and PTs have comparable knowledge to one another. DCs can easily replace your PTs role as a rehab specialist, but also your awesome PT can be just as effective when it comes to the treatment of musculoskeletal systems. But when it comes to the spine, and I’m not talking about spinal surgery or procedures that MDs do and are trained to do, I’m talking about mechanical problems that can arise from lifestyle, habits, sports injuries, etc, no one tops DCs. I have had this before. I can be prone to migraines and sometimes they do not go away. When the neck or upper back is out it can put pressure on the nerves and cause muscles to not rest correctly. This can cause tension in the lower head/neck area and cause irritation with the nerves in the neck. I have a father who is a D.O. and he would check my spine before giving me a message and adjustment. When pressure is relieved from that area it can allow the body to get out of the loop of having a headache/migraine.

I completely disagree with Chiropractic care being BS. I’ve had clear evidence night and day pain relief. I used to play top tier soccer and had a back so tight I was living in constant pain for years. Then a chiropractor did a compression and I was in tears that my pain had simply vanished. Gone. I felt renewed. I could sleep better, sit better, better sex, better mood, better everything. Then I injured myself at my construction job so much so I could barely walk and my lower back was hot and swollen. A chiropractor popped my back I could feel fluid buildup dissipate and my back became very sore but relaxed. Soon after a few weeks I began to recover. Chiropractic care is legitimate. They are able to pop spinal bones back into place deal with knots, muscle massage, and focus on deep scar tissue to help with severe pain in order to restore flexibility and movement. I have yet to hear a chiropractor mention supplements, or say that a spinal correction cured cancer or measles. I do know that without my doctor mentioning it I noticed my constipation was relieved because I was more relaxed and flexible so that I could get into a more relaxed position for bowel movement. I believe pain and stiffness and rigid biomechanics Can have an effect on your overall physiology. It doesn’t take a Doctor to notice these results. And the results are freaking NIGHT AND DAY. One year pain, next day NO PAIN. I repeat NO PAIN. To say something that had such apparent results is bs is just scoff worthy. I’ve been to several physical therapist. They were great gave me stretches to do and tried certain stretching. But my chiropractors I’ve been to just attacked the source of my pain. They investigated and narrowed down the possible issues to the source of my pain and just attacked. They just know where you are tender and pained and give you relief and increased movement from one day to the next. I don’t go to a chiropractor every week or every month. No I go once and maybe a follow up and it’s over i get my life back. Doctors prescribe you stuff to treat the symptoms chiropractors attack the source and you are cured and never see them again. That’s how it should be.

itzkevino “evidence”, is something you don’t say when it comes to methods of medical treatment, whether you twist or turn, whether your pain is fixed. Chiropractory is pseudoscience. You should go to physiotherapists, orthopedists, osteopaths. People with medical training. People who have the right to call themselves doctors. I went to a physiotherapist to help with lower back pain. Turns out my lumbar (L2 and L1) vertebrae were not properly aligned. Yes he did corrected it like a chiropractor would do. But then i had to do extensive core stability training to strengthen my abdomens. My abdomens were weak and back muscles were tight making my lumbar vertebrae displace. Another problem these people have is that when they do have some sort of medical training as physiotherapist for example, they open their own practice as a chiropractor while at the same time keeping a doctor title. The title you retain don’t cohere with your practices and therefore can be seen as fraud and a mis-use of your title. And as a med-student myself this thoroughly displeases me. These problems should be seen by medical specialist. Not some wackjob who offers quick fixes. As you know. The relief of pressure built in joint stimulates the release of endorphins which gives you that euphoric feeling. I encourage you, don’t fall for this bullshit no matter the impact it has on you.

HODB it’s hard to listen to the recommendation to see more legitimate medical doctors when I’m already cured of my pain. I don’t go to doctors or chiropractors I’m healthy and fully functional I have no need. I’ve been sent to physical therapy by my work after lifting heavy objects for months. Stretching and core workouts that I could already do on my own was the gist of it but i took it just as motivation to keep in shape. Conventional wisdom would see this as a better recommendation but I wouldn’t. Unless I find some kind of evidence that these successful chiropractors are incompetent by default due to their not being doctors I don’t see a reason to shy away from treatment. I can understand that there are bad chiropractic professionals that cause more damage than good and can severely injure someone but I believe the same could be said for all medical professionals that’s why malpractice insurance exist. Also I’d like to mention I’ve always dealt with chiropractors who firstly do an x-ray then use a gadget to check for bulges that looks like a meter of some sort and lastly probes for subluxations. They too have mentioned things such as L1 L2. I don’t know if that provides any evidence of proper procedure since you are in the medical field. But I will be doing a bit of research into osteopathic care.

I've worked in neurosurgery doing primarily spine surgery for 10 years. There are a lot of good chiropractors who practice a broad array of techniques that help people manage pain and in the world of back pain there are not always simple solutions for people who are desperate to try any reasonable option. In general, I remain chiropractor friendly and wouldn't tell my patient's not to see one if it's helping. However, I've also seen the terrifying consequences of traditional cervical spine manipulations causing major strokes in otherwise young healthy people---recommend avoidance of traditional manipulations---especially in the neck. Chiropractic therapy has grown to the magnitude it has due to #1 how common back pain is, and . #2 most medical doctors have historically blown back pain off. One of the first things you're taught about back pain in school is how inconsistent imaging and clinical symptoms are with clinical complaints and how difficult it can be to actually identify the source of back pain to focus a therapy on... this frustrates doctors and many just stop listening and chalk it up to the patient wanting pain meds.. This mindset is improving over the past 20-30 years with advancements in surgical techniques and troubleshooting pain procedures, but still a big issue.

A few months back I started to notice a numbing/tingelling sorta pain run down my leg that started at the knee until it reached my foot which would then cause my foot to go numb. This only happened when I was standing for more than 45 mins but it quickly got worse until it only took roughly 15 mins till I could feel the pain coming on. I squat down in a catcher's positions or if i sit, then I would feel INSTANT relief. I went to a regular doctor and he didnt do anything other than listen to what I had to say and to do stretches. Obviously it didnt help. So I went to a chiropractor and they immediately gave me xrays and checked all my range of motion. Based on my xrays, it turns out my pelvis was shifted slightly and was causing my tailbone to push on a nerve in my spine thus causing the numbing pain in my leg. I got 20 adjustments. These adjustments were only performed on the problem area of my back and never once was I told that I would be immediately cured. That it was a slow process. Each adjustment my pelvis and tailbone would start to straighten up and relieve pressure off the nerve. 2 steps forward when getting an adjustment, 1 step back on the days in between adjustments. They also only performed adjustments that would directly help move my pelvis back into place. I also was instructed to do certain back stretches while at home. After the 19th adjustment I no longer had the leg pain when I stand but I was told that it could very well come back even though my follow up xrays showed my pelvis being straight and narrow. I understand what joe is saying but not all chiropractors are con artists posing as doctors. My chiropractor never once "cracked" my back and said I was going to be better from now on. It was always slow adjustments of the spine mixed with physical therapy and never once did I hear my back pop during adjustments. Their are definitely snake oil salesmen out there just trying to scam you but some are real doctors that actually help people with spinal issues. It's not ALL bullshit.

How did you injure your neck in the first place?

Missed a few messages here. Sorry, it’s been nuts. For the first inquiry, I’ll try and look it up. I was quite a few years back now. Maybe 2011 or 2013 range. It would be just before my chiropractor appointment, so I can call them and try and get that date and work from there. The usual steps with any dr or specialist visit is he explains things, we get some paperwork and my wife put it in layman’s terms for me. What they told me was a form of bad traction. I do remember being in the office for initial exams and mildly turning my head various ways and when he gently pulled up from cupping both sides of my head below the ears, it felt much better. I’ll see what I can find As for the second question, I don’t know. I was physically active, but had a desk job and one day I woke up with a bad kink and it just got worse from there. After some weeks, I could barely stand it and didn’t want to move. I will say this. I am no medical expert, I am not saying that chiropractic can cure hearing loss or any other issues, but after this initial meeting, which I was hesitant to go to, the chiropractor took xrays (not the same thing the actual physician ordered, I know) and had me back, gave a brief explanation, had me lay on a table that had these collapsible sections and cranked my head a few ways. It was quick, loud, a bit worrying to be honest, but afterwards I felt eons better. Still sore and I didn’t have full range of motion. The next day it got even better. I came back for a recheck, where they suggested coming back on the regular, but I didn’t. My wife hates the chiropractor and never goes but once as well. After having our third child, she had siatic (so?) pain that was unbearable and was put on meds for it, along with regiments of ice and stretching. It helped her take the edge off, but was still in lots of pain. She reluctantly went and got adjusted and felt relief as well. No more meds. She still stretches on the regular now tho. I do t know what to say, and I’m sure they aren’t all the same, but I am more than thankful to have gone in.
@kkdoc78645 жыл бұрын
Michijere77 I absolutely agree that there is a place for chiropractic adjustment, and that is coming from an ER doc who is not fond of many alternative medicine ideas. If you had any MRI results showing a dislocation or disc nerve impingement with symptoms in your arms, that would be the only indication for a specialist to recommend neck surgery. If those tests weren’t done then perhaps he was just saying that you “might” need it pending test results. What you describe (if no anatomical emergency) sounds exactly like the severe spasms one can get sleeping the wrong way or whiplash injuries. I think those instances are perfect for a chiropractor because the only thing ortho guys offer is ice, pain meds and muscle relaxants. And the latter options are definitely not as effective.
@zacharystubler7504 жыл бұрын
I wanna jump in on this as kk doc said exactly what happened to me. I slept just woke up and my head wouldn't lift with out alot of pain and turning my head the wrong way extreme pain down to my fingertips. Saw my pcp and heres some codine 3s and relax. Ended up seeing chiro couple days later and while they tried my body was too tense and didn't charge me for the visit (except the xrays), and sense they couldn't give meds i ended up going back to pcp. She was less than thrilled to hear i went to a chiro and requested the xrays and actually checked my neck and shoulder. so then prescribed 6 weeks of 3 days of massage and heat therapy with some muscle relaxers and vicodin as my muscle in my shoulder spasmed pretty bad i guess and said a pinched nerve. at $120 a vist at the therapy, i was like screw this after a week and went back to the chro. With not spasming (on the relaxers) there was a really loud crack follow by a instant loud yell from me and literal instant relief and could move my head. Literally cost me 30 bucks for 15 mins and worked. Looking back if the doctor didn't have a pissing match and the chiro was able to just give me the muscle relaxer i would have saved almost 3 weeks of misery AND 1000 bucks out of my pocket.
