My dad was an Atomic Veteran. The Navy refused to acknowledge for years what my dad went through. They would do atomic tests and tell the men to cover their eyes. My dad said he could see clean through his hands like he was being x-rayed. My dad went into the Navy a healthy young man. Left legally blind. Died at the age of 43. Atomic bombs change ones DNA. These abnormalities are then passed on to the offspring after exposure. My two brothers and myself have health issues that are similar to other off springs exposed to atomic testing. My thyroid stopped working all together at the age of 30. My brothers and I both have bone issues. one brother in his neck and my other brother and myself have it in our spines. I was the only one out to the three kids that could even produce children. One of the islands my dad was on was called Christmas island. How ironic. That island was lit up. My dad also died on Christmas in 1984. He also was on Johnston island. His officers encouraged the sailors to swim in lagoons that had been exposed to previous atomic blasts. My dad and the rest of the men were literal guinea pigs for the Navy. I hope you read this and look into it. It is very interesting and devastating for not only my family but for so many other families.

The thing that will forever be seared into my memory is going to the grocery store with my stepdad (who was already an Army Vet at this time) and seeing this woman in front of us pay for a family platter of shrimp, 5 gal tub of ice cream and several prime cut steak with a food stamp card. That same yr my stepdad’s commission was called back up and he spent the next 18 months in Iraq as a CO CDR for the Army. Then when he came home to watch him struggle to readjust to civilization life and being home. Watch him struggle for years with PTSD and all the VA red tape and bureaucracy it took for him to get diagnosed and helped. The same government that thinks there’s nothing wrong with our inflated and abused social safety nets like food stamps is the same government claiming there’s not enough funding and resources for our vets that fight and sacrifice life, limb and sanity for those same leeches. The whole thing disgust me. It disgust me now watching fellow soldiers that are currently in having to fight day after day for basic care to help keep themselves battle ready. And to anyone that has never served and who’s automatic response is “well they knew what they signed up for” or “you should suck it up because you’re supposed to be a Patriot”. You wanna know what myself and what many of my fellow soldiers were never prepared for when we signed up? It wasn’t the chance of dying in some foreign country. We accepted that. We didn’t expect toxic leadership that preaches the Army values and Creeds to its soldiers but never lives up to them, and facing zero consequences no matter how much we try to speak out about it. It’s a 25 yr old that has permanently lost full mobility in one of her legs after less than 4 yrs in the military because of an injury that happened in basic. An injury that was repeatedly ignored and dismissed by military medical practitioners to the point she will have to deal with often crippling pain the rest of her life. It’s having to hear almost identical stories for hundreds of soldiers’ frustration with receiving little to no help for Behavior Health. Them being put in a position where because there’s not enough resources to go around they are expected to get the mental health care they need for the possibly of one 45 min session a month. And those are the lucky ones. Frustrations with a mental health system that’s so inadequate and only adding further frustration and stress to their problems that they’d rather try to tough it out on their own then keep being let down. It’s 3 suicides in 3 months in my unit in 2020, because during lock downs soldiers were treated more like prisoners placed in solitary confinement than war fighters. Rules and restrictions changed almost daily to the point people couldn’t go talk to their friends in person without risking UCMJ punishment. No one tells you about that when you raise your hand and take that oath of service. And after years of all that wear and tear on your body and mind the Army, the Government and the people you spent all that time serving dump your broken body to the curb and turn their back on you. They don’t care about any of the care you now need because “you knew what you signed up for”. It’s not the service that bothers us. It’s what happens when you come home.

When they shut it down in 1967 they made burn pits and set light to a large amount of chemical weapons and other equipment. The people who did that died from various cancers. My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and he’s 49. I think it’s related to the Desert Storm burn pits and we’re trying to work it through the VA. 😪 The VA and government hopes that veterans never find out what entitlements they can claim and either wait later in life or just die. That’s why I push people to file for disability ATLEAST! Especially if you’ve documented it well while on active duty. Just because you don’t think you’re “disabled” doesn’t mean that the VA won’t compensate you for it. My dad was at 30% this year and now he’s at 80%! Shooting for 100% next...same with me...I’m at 70% and aiming for 100%.

I remember this MASSIVE burn pit on BIAP. I mean the size of a small village. The first time I had to go through it I was shocked at how horrific it was. These massive mounds of trash and debris in every direction, fire and smoke all around us and seagulls swarming everywhere. I actually thought a major bomb had gone off and that we were in peril and then I realized that place was always like this. My friend described it as actual hell. I realized that these fires were eternal and when I wanted to show people something cool on BIAP I would take them there. The sad part is I actually had recordings of this place because of how insane it looked and I remember showing it to my friends back home to show them what war was like (lol). They didn’t believe it was real because of how insane it looked. I don’t have those videos anymore unfortunately.
@theregoesone32252 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I was at BIAP winter through spring of 2005 (camp sather). Never saw the pit. Went to victory and striker often to eat. I remember in the winter going to striker, soldiers at the ecp we're keeping warm with a fire in a 50 gal drum, right next to the ecp. Much respect to you and everyone who has been there and done so much.
@BoomerElite4u2 жыл бұрын
Making me have flashbacks.. I'm pretty sure the ECP at Striker (Stryker) during that time was known as ECP 7. Lost some friends out there, but I feel like most people never saw the burn area because like you had Striker, and then as you drove to Liberty you would almost immediately pass Cropper and then Grizzly, and at the sharp corner where you finally did a hard right turn to start heading directly towards Liberty... if you were to venture beyond that sharp corner it would take you directly into the burning area, which looked like hell on earth. I used to have videos of the place and joked about showing them to friends back home to show them how bad Iraq really was (because this place looked like Hell on Earth). Striker changed a lot from 2005 and like 2007 BTW. When I went back I didn't even recognize the place as the same base. It's like ever square inch had been torn down and replaced, and it went from being one of the more primitive camps in 2005 (when compared to Liberty, Victory etc.) to being the most state of the art and high tech. But I didn't like it. Was suddenly swarming with high ranking pogues who wanted to nit pick and yell at everyone. The real Striker was dead as far as I was concerned.
@theregoesone32252 жыл бұрын

A friend of mine worked as an Army Specialist E-4 doing Armorer work for a Forward Support Company; he talked to me about how he used to clean the weapons with incredibly caustic carcinogenic compounds with his bare hands because the Army didn’t label them as toxic. Toxic chemicals require different transport infrastructure which is more expensive to setup so they just suppressed the labeling; since he didn’t know they were bad he would work with his bare hands with them, then he would light up a cigarette to take a break and the chemicals would go through the filter from his fingers and then into his lungs. Always remember folks; the Army needs your body to function as long as your in the Army, after you’re out you’re worthless. As far as I’m concerned, 20% of the funding for each Military Branch should go exclusively to the Veterans of said branches.

What’s worse than the conditions you develop is the treatment: coming to the VA for help, when nobody knows or even cares to understand how to help you. Misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, lack of meds to follow up, missed notes of previous complaints, lack of time spent to understand the relationship of your conditions, long wait times, bottlenecking priorities... Anyone that’s had surgery at the VA also understands the disappointment, especially if you also spent time in service as a medic. Army medics are better than VA doctors. It’s not any wonder vets are killing themselves. It’s not that they aren’t trying to get help. It’s that they’re trapped in this wasteful and careless system.
