I could see Diglett being one of those runs where most of it is really fast thanks to dig's 100 power in Gen 1 and the base speed crit system in Gen 1 favouring Diglett, but that every once in a while you'll run into a Pokemon that you normally hardly think about that's a brick wall. That and most of Lance would be awful. Three strong flying types. If your rival has Charizard too, that's rough. Also Paras was horrible and I did it in Fire Red where at least it could hold a quick claw. At level 100 it was still slower than the rival's Charizard in the final battle, and it's flamethrower would bring us to red health from full. Doing the same thing in Gen 1 would probably require the AI to do something stupid, or just fantastic luck with Spore. Also, I'm literally doing a Zubat in Red run while I'm watching this! What a coincidence!

This is funny because Pidgey's evolutions beat the game quite easily. Actually the Gen III remakes are way harder on pretty much all singlemon runs. Even at very high levels you get dunked by the Elite Four without items.
@OmegaTyrant4 жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of people think the Gen 1 games were the hardest, but then they had the worst AI, absolutely terrible movesets in Red/Blue, and you had the old Stat Exp system that let you get a way bigger overall boost to your stats than the modern EV system (no overall limit and each stat can get the maximum boost while the EV system has an overall limit about a third of what you could get with the Stat EXP system). There's additionally the Badge boosts system where certain Badges will permanently boost a corresponding stat by 12.5% for all ingame battles with all your pokemon, and by the time you get the 7th Badge all your non-HP stats will be boosted by 12.5%, while Gen 3 would nerf the Badge boosts to 10% and then Gen 4 onward just took them out altogether. For an example of how big of a statistical advantage you got from the Stat EXP system combined with the Badge boosts, the last time I played Blue I had a level 48 Nidoking (a pokemon with 85 base Speed) outspeed Agatha's level 60 Gengar (110 base Speed). Gen 1 is absolutely the easiest Gen to do challenges when it stacks so much in your favor.

You also have to consider that you as the player are buffed too! Better TMs, better moves, VS seeker,-and move tutors (Rock Slide being one of them.) I think it’s an even trade
@OmegaTyrant4 жыл бұрын
@@Iceblade269 It's not like the player struggled to get good moves in Gen 1, while the AI trainers were severely gimped in that regard, to the point that in Champion Blue's battle he has shit like a Rhydon with only weak Normal moves, an Arcanine that is still using Ember for STAB, and an Exeggutor whose only damaging moves are Normal and doesn't even have a full moveset. The Vs. Seeker just made it quicker to grind levels and gave a better way to grind money than relying on Pay Day, but it's not like either game really requires grinding and the player should never be struggling for funds to afford items throughout the game.

I've done a pikachu only run on blue because he's my favorite pokémon and the first 2 hours we're difficult to get up to lvl 16 and beat Brock, but after that the game was pretty easy. Once you get thunderbolt, battles become way easier and once I got double edge, rock types weren't even that big of an issue. I ended up beating the elite four at level 86 and I killed all three legendary birds to establish my dominance.

I remember trying that back in the day, abusing gen 1 AI to make it possible. My team was in the high 30s by the time I beat the game. Actual skilled people could probably go as low as the mid-20s.
@OmegaTyrant4 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking of this and seeing how low level you can get (while banning the use of evasion-boosting moves since they can allow you to win any battle with enough luck) would be a lot more interesting, as the mainline Pokemon games being so easy and opponents' levels just not getting high enough means very few challenges are actually impossible (at least prior to Gen 4, Gen 4 onwards having the EV system plus no Badge boosts makes things a lot tougher for challenge runs). Also when challenges involves teams more people gotta use the Set battle mode, way too many people are using Shift/Switch when that makes things so much easier. If you're not going to use items because they give you a big unfair advantage, why use the battle mode that also gives you such a blatantly unfair advantage over the AI?

Did the challenge with Zubat! It was a bit hard to get through Sabrina, Lorelei and Agatha but other than that it was doable at lvl 60+. Use Double team + Confuse ray to set up badge boost glitch power ups, and become untouchable (albeit relying on RNG). Against E4, use Mega Drain + Wing attack until Agatha. Replace Mega drain for Mimic to copy Hydro Pump from Gyrarados (to OHKO Aerodactyl), and Sky attack from Pidgeot for 2HKOing Blue's pokemon other than Exeggutor (Wing attack on it). Or replace Wing attack to use Mega drain on Rhydon to get some health back from Pidgeot's wing attacks, and possibly useful against Blastoise if you chose it as the rival's Pokémon.

Eevee can damage Ghosts with Bide, which hits Ghosts in Gen 1, that run you referenced overlooked it so a solo Eevee run (and solo Scyther, another pokemon that just learns Normal attacking moves in Red/Blue) is possible.

I've done an Onix solo challenge run and beat the elite 4, seeing the stats and moves geodude has, I don't think it would be that different. The only thing is that Onix doesn't hit as hard, but has more speed so it attacks first against fast mons and crits quite a lot, and also he has screech so early game is feasable. Regardless I think Geodude would be the same.

As of the Magnemite run just a couple of weeks ago, I believe he's now done all 10 Pokémon featured here. So I think it'd be interesting to see how they ended up performing and if he under (or indeed, over) estimated the Pokémon's capabilities. 10. Magnemite - 7h 18m, Lvl 68, Ranked 12th. Honestly, respectable; it's in the upper half of the tier list. I think he underestimated it a bit. 9. Diglett - 8h 28m, Lvl 78, Ranked 24th. Not an amazing performance, though not the absolute shits; it's still quite far down the tier list though. I think he guessed this one about correctly. 8. Nidoran F - 8h 37m, Lvl 80, Ranked 26th. Again, not a sterling performance, and a bit further down. I think he guessed this one correctly, including it being worse than Nidoran M. 7. Paras - 9h 22m, Lvl 72, Ranked 27th. Yeah, not amazing, though in fairness poor Paras was hindered by the mistake of having Body Slam deleted from it. Still, I think he guessed correctly. 6. Pikachu - 6h 57m, Lvl 69, Ranked 11th. Pika did pretty good here, 2nd best of all the Kanto starters. He definitely underestimated it. 5. Abra - 17h 18m, Lvl 63, Ranked 30th. He himself has said he didn't fully grasp how annoying it'd be to get by Brock so, yeah. Abra should have been 2nd or something, in hindsight. 4. Zubat - 9h 17m, Lvl 82, Ranked 28th. Yeah he definitely guessed this one correctly; took ages and took a lot of experience. 3. Pidgey - 10h 48m, Lvl 90, Ranked 29th. He absolutely guessed this one correctly, including stating that it is in many ways the worst Pokémon he's used (that can actually finish, anyway.) 2. Geodude - 7h 49m, Lvl 79, Ranked 20th. Not a tremendous showing however, it wasn't *that* bad. I think he underestimated Geodude a fair bit here. 1. Weedle - DNF @ 44h 16m, Lvl 100. I think everyone could have seen this coming without him even having to do it, so sure enough he was quite correct here lol. Honestly aside from Geo, Pika and Magnemite his predictions were very much on point.

The reason why Magikarp isn't on here... is because you can't get pass the Ghost Tower in Lavender Town. Struggle is a normal type move (as you know, it is ineffective against Ghost-type Pokemon) and there's a mandatory trainer you need to battle on the second floor.
@ssjbread28034 жыл бұрын
Yeah. You cannot finish the game with it unless you get one with dragon rage, which is event-only and also defeats the purpose of the challenge imo, if youre just gonna rig movesets like that

KZbinr: Solo run time! Brock: I'm about to end this man's whole career.
@iWantToDetonate11 ай бұрын
KZbin recommended this video to me even though I've already seen it. But I thought it could be fun comparing this list of "which run might be the most awful" to the tier list result. Best to worst: 1. Magnemite 2. Diglett 3. Nidoran F 4. Paras 5. Pikachu 6. Abra 7. Zubat 8. Pidgey 9. Geodude 10. Weedle On the tier list: 1. Pikachu 2. Magnemite 3. Geodude 4. Diglett 5. Nidoran F 6. Paras 7. Zubat 8. Pidgey 9. Abra 10. Weedle The biggest "difference" is Geodude. Even though it might not be as "fun" it ended up somewhat good. Quite interesting to see Abras positioning too. Everyone could image that the beginning of the game would be really bad, but HOW bad it actually was might have been difficult to predict.

There's plenty of solo runs out there, and while they're ok, a lot of them end up being too similar: overleveling + dumb luck. You sure you have enough tools in gen l to add much variety to it?

To an extent. JRose has relied on buying Potions to have certain Pokémon not faint too quickly due to Struggle because of recoil damage. That's mostly in the case of Pokémon that can't learn attacking moves upon obtaining them, namely Abra or Magikarp.
