For our 10th challenge we finally get to determine whether a Pokemon that only learns Normal damaging moves can defeat Kanto on its own. Many say it's not possible, but then again this video exists so....

Like honestly, some of his earlier challenges had way too many plugs, but it's gotten so much better over time that I (almost :D) look forward to his challenges as much as I do to Jrose's. So I definitely share that sentiment, even though I'm quite picky when it comes to the YT-creators I like and use to watch on a somewhat regular basis. Still, all of that has nothing to do with him as a person, and I'd go as far and say that in 80% of the cases, you cannot even come close to being able to judge someone's personality through their content. True on that. Also, I do agree that it is a glitch as well. As, if it wasn’t you wouldn’t have a need for the Slyph Scope. I mean what sense does it make to put in two ways to get pass one thing? When the Slyph Scope makes it an unavoidable battle? Why also would they change it in the remake, if it wasn’t a glitch? Jrose makes some valid points. I really don’t care how someone chooses to play a game, but at least have the sense to admit when you’re wrong. As the points they make about the doll is easily debatable, and can easily be proven incorrect. That aside, it’s still an item-less run, so it doesn’t matter anyway.

30:05 when you said mirror move would have been bad, cause you may have gotten paralyzed, I just want to let you know that body slam cannot paralyze normal types in generation 1, due to a mechanic where status effects from attacking moves cannot affect the same type as said attacking move. When your pokemon is neutral against all the starters, I think the best choice for the Rival is to pick Bulbasaur. Even though in the case of physical attackers the Blastoise line might be a bit harder, when the Rival picks Squirtle they lose Gyarados, who when you don't have Electric moves, is a ton more threatening than his Exeggcute/Exeggutor, which are also a lot less threatening than the Venusaur because of the rival's horrible moveset for them (whhhyyyyyy did they think it was a good idea to have his Exeggutor just have weak Normal attacking moves and not even have a full moveset in the Champion fight?!). Additionally the Rival gets Gyarados as soon as Pokemon Tower and always has Hydro Pump (and its Dragon Rage can be very threatening too early on), whereas the Exeggcute (and Growlithe too for that matter) don't evolve until the Champion fight, so that adds significantly more challenge to the Rival fights throughout the game. Charizard though will pretty much always be the worst choice for the Rival if your pokemon isn't weak to Fire moves, as the Growlithe/Arcanine he would have without Zard isn't much better than his Exeggcute/Exeggutor, and his Charmeleon/Zard gets Rage as soon as the Pokemon Tower and keeps it for the rest of the battles, which if the random AI picks it pretty much guarantees victory for you unless you're almost dead.
@OmegaTyrant
@OmegaTyrant 4 жыл бұрын
@NJShell2 Here is what I think of for Yellow; Exeggutor becomes a mainstay on all his teams and he completely loses Gyarados and Arcanine, while the three that get swapped around is Cloyster, Ninetales, and Magneton. They all evolve at the same time by Silph Co so no obvious early advantage like with the Red/Blue Gyarados, but the Cloyster does get better moves faster, as by Silph Co it has Clamp and Aurora Beam while the Ninetales has Ember for STAB until it gets Fire Spin in penultimate Route 22 battle and the Magneton is stuck with Thundershock until the Champion battle. The Cloyster is also just going to always be an absolute bitch for any physical-based attacker, and when compared to the Rival's Vaporeon, Vaporeon has Water Gun for its Water STAB until Route 22 where it gets Hydro Pump, while it never gets Ice coverage better than Aurora Beam when Cloyster gets Ice Beam for the Champion fight, and Cloyster gets STAB off the Ice moves too unlike Vaporeon. So the Cloyster will usually be better for Blue than the Vaporeon unless maybe for Fire types (who can hit Cloyster neutrally with STAB special attacks while the Vaporeon will be much tougher for them to take down). When it comes to comparing the Eeveelutions with each other, Jolteon is the clear cut best of them; they all have great Special but it's the fastest pokemon you'll fight in the game and it crits over a quarter of the time while the others are just slow. The Jolteon is also just completely superior to the Magneton, as Magneton is much slower with just slightly better Special and is stuck with just Normal moves for non-Electric coverage. Then the Flareon is obviously the worst, as all Flareon's Attack stat just gets used for is Bite and Quick Attack, and those Normal moves are the only additional coverage it gets, whereas Ninetales trades a bit less Special for much better Speed, better durability, and Confuse Ray in the Champion fight. His Ninetales never gets Flamethrower unlike Flareon, but with Ninetales' Speed it having Fire Spin is very dangerous if you can't outspeed it. Overall if you're doing a solo pokemon run in Yellow and the pokemon is neutral with all the Eeveelutions, the Jolteon team has to be the hardest one, as it gets the best Eeveelution, and he gets better picks in his Water and Fire type. Even if your pokemon is weak to one of the other Eeveelutions the Jolteon team might still be the best because the Cloyster/Ninteales are probably bigger threats (and if you're any Grass type but Tangela, you're going to be 4X weak to Jolteon's Pin Missile too, so it + Ninetales > Flareon + Magneton for them). Main exceptions I see is if you're a dual Rock/Ground type (who just invalidate Jolteon so it doesn't really matter if it's better than Magneton, while STAB Rock Slide hurts Cloyster more than STAB Earthquake hurts Vaporeon, so Vaporeon + Magneton is going to be harder than Cloyster + Jolteon), or you're a Fire type (their Fire moves are hurting Cloyster more than their coverage is hurting Vaporeon, and maybe a paralysis from that Magneton can cripple them for Vaporeon). Tangela is maybe the only case I can think of where the Flareon team would be hardest, as it counters Jolteon pretty well (Electric resistance and its great Defense means a X2 Pin Missile from Jolteon is still not doing much), but then that level 63 Ninetales on the Jolteon team is probably still a bigger wall for it than the level 65 Flareon, while Magneton isn't doing any better against Tangela.

Just think about it, their Challenge runs are basically Severe Medical conditions of Self-induced mental and psychologyc harm, that may develop additional serious complications. Abrupt mood swings, usually preceded by characteristic shouts, such as "Seriously, YOU'RE USING ANOTHER FULL RESTORE??", "Of course, you hit 3 Hydro Pumps in a row and I miss with Tackle" and "A crit? Additional mental disorders include severe PSTD, progressively delirious thoughts ("I can totally beat Steven with a single Wobbuffet" or "Doing a 53 part-series of Gen l solo runs over a few weeks is a great idea") or obsessive fixations towards individual people, this latter behavior actually ended up in a very tragic story. The patient in question calls his methods "Softlocks". So, as you can see, doing this runs quickly depletes your sanity and health in general. Do you think anybody in America or other countries with a shitty Health Care could POSSIBLY AFFORD all the doctors, meds and the huge amount of therapy needed when you do this types of runs? Nah, there's no way. Free Health Care is mandatory.

@leraffl1271
@leraffl1271 4 жыл бұрын
It is however not considered a glitch by speedrunners, just like the badge boost thing. They are both considered oversights since in principle they DO what they're supposed to do, namely escape non-battle encounters and increase your stats by 9/8 respectively. HOWEVER they result in unexpected things such as running away from marowak or reappliance of the boost. Soooo... I like to take it the way speedrunners do since i watch them regularly, but you are right, the pokedoll would still not be desired for this run. Would be interesting to see how far one could get with a magikarp, since the Margikarp run ended in the Tower if i remember correctly. (Please correct me if I'm wrong) I mean you still wouldn't be able to win against the E4 due to Agatha, but still.
@exantiuse497
@exantiuse497 4 жыл бұрын
@LeRaffl How is the badge boost glitch not a glitch? Badges are supposed to raise the pokemon's respective stats by 12.5%, but due to faulty code the boost is applied several times if you use stat altering moves, it's the definition of a glitch. If speedrunners are allowed to use the glitch in "glitchless" runs it's because the glitch is so hard to avoid, the only way would be to ban all stat boosting moves and require the runner to reset every time the opponent uses a move that alters your stats, which would be senseless, so they let it pass even though it's definitely a glitch
@leraffl1271
@leraffl1271 4 жыл бұрын
Exantius E I tweeted shenanagans explicitly about the badge boost reappliance (a well respected runner). Question: "just a random pokemon question: Is reappliance of the badge boosts considered a glitch? Is it allowed in glichless runs since it may be impossible to avoid it? Or is it considered an oversight or exploit similar to the pokedoll "glitch"?" Answer: 100% oversight and allowed. If it weren’t the following would be banned: using any x item, being hit by any status move that changes stats (string shot, growl, ect), using a boosting move (agility, swords dance, ect), and a few more things as well lol
@VideoGameVillians

Moon - the obvious one 2 - SS. Anne - rival room, 4th door, but you have to battle a trainer for it 3 - Power Plant - Would take a lot of backtracking for but might be worth your time to pick up if you're willing. It's out in the open 4 - Cerulean City - the hidden one that's so obvious it hurts 5 - Pokemon Tower - maybe not ideal for this run but it's out in the open 6 - Rocket Hideout - yay spin puzzles.... 7 - Silph Co. - obvious 8 - Cycling Road - hidden in the patch of grass 9 - Warden's House - STRENGTH 10 + 11 - Cinnabar Mansion Basement - Out in the open one + hidden one 12 - Victory Road - Rock puzzle room, the obvious one that i know you always get anyway hope this was helpful!

I think there are a few common reasons why some people dislike MDB, keep in mind this is mainly an semi-objective analysis not hate: -He constantly interrupted the flow of his videos to insert his twitter plugs. He also frequently mentions to like and comment shamelessly help the KZbin algorithm, which as a half-joke is funny for maybe the first 2-3 times. - He also took the idea of single Pokemon challenges and mass produced them, which can make the content/commentary seem a little forced and superficial. This reason is accentuated if you consider Pikasprey and Jrose original trendsetters of single-Pokemon challenges. - Most of the playthroughs are just cookie cutter copies of his other Pokemon runs, with even his commentary virtually identical (I get Jrose does this too, but he is at least self-aware that the content is similar). These flaws really aren't that bad, definitely not enough to hate MDB, but the internet is ruthless and takes things too far. I haven't watched him lately, but he may have removed these issues. If he hasn't than he will most likely improve as KZbinr as time goes on.

Even though his style is not my favorite (but I don't hate it either), I must say: fortunately he's not interrupting his videos to plug his Twitter recently. Most frequently, during a grinding montage midway throughout the run, he gives shoutouts to whatever other Channel he was watching while grinding (mostly small channels, but funny enough a few times it's been Jrose), and sometimes he might mention one of his on going Pokémon let's plays, but these don't come out of nowhere like the Youngster Joey gag. About the Fossil-comments-algorithm gag, the viewers have become OBSESSED with it, commenting over it even on Gen 3 or 5 runs in which it's not mentioned. It's like a Meme for Pokémon challenges, now, you can see similar comments on any run on any Channel. Sometimes as a parody of it, but I'd like to think viewers are more aware of how much it helps, so the overflow of "Which fossil did you take? I heard it helps asking" or" I'm only commenting to help with the KZbin algorithm" are not always intended to mock MDB, but to support their respective KZbinr even when they have nothing funny or interesting to say. Maybe thinking about it that way is too naive, but being that way it's literally on my nature. So, in the end, I think he's been learning and improving. He'll never be my favourite challenge creator, since his way of narration, humor and the little specifics of the methods he uses for his runs don't really resonate with me that much, but that's just a matter of preference. He works very hard, is a nice guy and has earned my total respect. And I'd still watch him from time to time.
@exantiuse497
@exantiuse497 4 жыл бұрын
I don't hate MDB, I'm sure he's a nice person, but I don't like his videos. The worst thing, for me at least, is the way he constantly sucks up to the "youtube algorithm". KZbin algorithm is the worst thing about KZbin, it forces everyone who wants to strike big on KZbin into the same mold, it constricts creativity by effectively shutting your channel down if your videos are about certain topics (you literally weren't allowed to say "coronavirus" on a video for a month or so, for example), and promotes toxic practices like clickbait and begging for likes and comments. So I get really aggravated when people celebrate the algorithm like that. Sorry bout the rant

There really is no point to not evolving Eevee right away in Gen 1, its evolutions all learn their own level up moves unlike other stone evolutions, and all you're getting for it by level up that the Eeveelutions don't get is Bite, and in Yellow, Focus Energy, with the former being crap (plus completely obsoleted by Body Slam) and the latter doesn't work properly in RBY. The only reason to delay evolution is if you're in Yellow and want to use Focus Energy on an Eeveelution for Stadium (where the move actually works as intended).

When I tried this I found Substitute to work really well for the Elite 4. Against Loreilei it prevents your Attack from getting dropped by Growls and Aurora Beams, which then allows you to safely mimic Slowbro's Amnesia and get some Badge Boost stacks as well as buff your durability massively against Jynx and Lapras. With Substitute I was able to consistently beat Loreilei pretty much every time once Eevee was in the 50s. It also helped against Agatha as it protected against confusion and the final Gengar's Toxic (though because Gen 1 it unfortunately doesn't protect against Hypnosis), protects against other potentially bad stat drops like getting Leer'd, and gives insurance against crits and will help your durability in general. Unfortunately you can only get the TM for it from the Game Corner for 7700 coins, and when playtime is a concern like in your runs, I do not know if you can get enough money from trainers and items to just buy it without playing slots, especially on top of buying vitamins, so it might not be viable in time-concerned runs. But for runs that just focus on finishing at as low a level as possible like mine, it makes a huge difference. I also kept Sand Attack up to Agatha; yeah needing some luck sucks, but she is going to be a luck-based fight no matter what you do with Eevee, so one Sand Attack against the Ghosts can help you avoid getting put to sleep and might save you some Substitutes if you get a Night Shade miss (at my level I didn't have enough HP for a Sub to take a Night Shade, and the Gengars were 3HKOs with Night Shade, so the extra bit of luck stacking helped). After Agatha I replaced it with Reflect for Lance/Blue and never bothered with Double Edge, as the extra bit of power over Body Slam with recoil wasn't worth giving up the other utility moves (especially when you need health to make Substitutes). Overall with perfect DVs and grinding out Stat EXP, I was able to win with solo Eevee entering the Elite 4 at level 61 and finishing at 65 on Blue's final pokemon (I also gave him the Venusaur team, as when you're neutral against all the starters the Venusaur + Gyarados is much better than Blastoise + Exeggcute/Exeggutor).

I watch you, Johnstone, and mahdrybread all the time and you each have your own unique flare. I’ve been playing Pokémon since I was 4 and over the past few years of watching the 3 of you, I’ve learned more about the game than I could have in the preceding years combined. Thank you for doing your part in making this community better.

Its hard to find content that is of good qualitiy and actually entertaining. For now, much appreciation from my end - and keep going.

I'm still not used to JRose having an upload schedule of less than 1 video a year. It's a very weird feeling tbh. Weird, but good feeling.

I guess you chose Blastoise for the rival since it has great defence, every time though it looks like such an inconsistent Pokemon with the 2 bad moves it has for the final battle lol. Makes me wonder if it would've been harder with Venusaur, but well we usually see only the successful attempts so that makes it looks worse than it is maybe

That bit about MDB was unexpected, and as a fan of both channels, definitely welcomed! You guys both have your own styles, and that's what makes your runs interesting and fun to watch. Love to see my favorite channels supporting each other. You guys are the best.
