I read the Lord of the Rings when I was younger and I absolutely loved it. As I got older and the films were made, it was one of the few films I’ve watched that actually lived up to the book. Gone with the wind was another. I’ve also worshipped many time at the Oratory RC Church in Birmingham, where he attended and was educated, and his faith also inspired him in his writing. He drew a lot of inspiration for Lord of the Rings from areas in, or near Birmingham and other areas in the West Midlands, the Cotswolds, Worcestershire & Gloucestershire.

Nice one Paul. Just to let you know that Beren and Luthian are two characters that Tolkien created who were tragic lovers. They appear in “the Silmarillion” which is a book connected to the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Quite a touching aspect to the gravestone.

Thankyou Paul ….,I chuckled as you were trying to get your tongue round all that info about Tolkien….it was sad at the start of his life, coming here for just a short holiday, but then sadly losing his father, so never going back to South Africa. He must have worked very hard at school with English, to eventually write such brilliant books…as you say, I wonder too what he would think about the films they have made based on his books. Fifty years almost since he passed…half a century…yet someone is still tending their grave really beautifully…..that funny round shape said something about monetary …was it a Lord of the rings type money token from a game, or actually a badge? OK, so the Little badge "Smail Montaraz"... A Smail is from the Hobbit folk... Basically a word for their Hobbit Holes... The Great Smails in the Hobbit and LOTR are described in detail. A warm cosy underground network of Hobbitness.... I am uncertain of the word Montaraz without going back to the books... Also, Beren and Luthien is a wonderful story of Love, adventure, tragedy and heroism... Very nice touch on his headstone.... Also, another nice touch is the white flower,,, Tolkien described the "Simbelmyne" flower in his books. Almost like a snowdrop flower... Very nice Thank You for uploading this one... Fun fact: Her Majesty, Queen Margrethe 2. of Denmark illustrated drawings for Lord of the Rings, when she was a young woman and sent them to J.R.R.Tolkien under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer. His family found them after his death 🙂

I'm a cemetery addict, there's something about a calm day and the sound of silence around you that makes you feel quite at ease . I love to sit there and look at the headstones especially the really old ones and wonder what life was like way back then. I came to your channel by accident a few months back Paul and when watching your videos I get the same feeling of calm and ease especially the way your compassion, respect and empathy come across. Thank you for this , although I'm not an avid reader of his work, I enjoyed the short narration about his life , he was a very talented man. I go and see my dad nearly everyday at his grave. And it gets me thro dark days. It is peaceful. And I miss him so much. Its the closest I feel to him its very peaceful I walk round now and again at old ones 2. It's such a peaceful nice feeling completely agree.

Going to his graveside is a way of still being with him, I know it sounds daft, but at least when we go to the cemetery we can have a good talk to them and I'm in no doubt , your dad will hear every word. It was JRR Tolkien's influence that made me love English literature so much (I got a first class degree in it ((by two points)) - I worshiped at the Oratory Church as a child (where he went) - he opened my world to fantastic imagery and story telling 🙂

I’ve been to the Oratory R.C Church in Birmingham to worship many times. Beautiful church and he was educated there too. I also believe Tolkien got a lot of his inspiration for his novels from many places in, or near the Birmingham and West Midlands area.

I remember LOT being filmed in my home country of NZ , everything was LOT and you couldn't go anywhere without knowing someone from either movie workers or actors, costumes. Got too the point where I wanted it to be over, and subsequently didn't watch the movies for years. Then the DVD set was on sale I brought it more for my collection. OMG what a turn around I loved it. And have taken my children to areas where it was filmed. Once again great work love the channel.

How very moving to see the grave of this great writer.I knew he had been an academic but I didn’t know that he had had such an illustrious career,alongside his writing. What a wonderful decision to start off 2023 with this great man’s last resting place.A very simple headstone, I’m sure that’s what he would have wanted.

I only ever read Lord of the Rings once, it’s a bit hefty, but I have read The Hobbit a few times and I once read a short children’s story of Tolkien’s called Farmer Giles of Ham. That was so long ago I don’t really remember what it was about but I remember I thought it was a nice little story. I should probably try and track it down again. His grave looks in good shape, those flowers are lovely.

After reading and watching the films he did inspire me to have a drink in the Eagle and Child pub in Oxford. Apparently the pub inspired him for his book the Hobbit. True or not I don’t know but totally understand why having sat in there. As a teen when spectrums came out, The Hobbit was one of the first games I played. (Badly and gave up with trying to load a tape). Great video yet again ❤

Hi Paul, Happy new year, thank you. Perhaps not many would know JRR Tolkien , but certainly the lord of the rings, such is the life of writer's sometimes. Writer's write, readers read, perhaps interesting to know what expectations writers have of their work, I guess for them it's a release, to be able to put your own thoughts on paper, not necessarily for monetary purposes. Always interesting activity in grave yards, squirrel's, strange men, what's next. Excellent posts

To echo what a previous comment said, I agree JRR wouldn't have been happy with the way his books would have been made into movies. Like my all time favourite author, Clive Cussler, the two books he allowed to be made into movies were ruined. Sahara with Matthew McConnaughey and Lew Grades appalling Raise the Titanic, missed so much essential parts of the books that it turned what could have been superb movies into running jokes. Clive before he passed away in 2020 swore none of his books would ever again be turned into movies. Rest in Peace Clive and JRR.

Oxford resident here. Very nice upload about Tolkien. Weird seeing Wolvercote Cemetery on your channel again. So many people I know laid to rest there. Recognising headstones…. Kids, adults, pensioners. There are actually a few graves in very close proximity to each other of kids who all went to school together. Couple died of cancer, a few died in the same car crash. Cemeteries are very sad places to visit, but also beautiful. They are serene places to reflect not just on those lost but also life. You’re always so respectful wherever you visit. And for the record, unless there’s an active funeral, the church is always kept locked. Much love. X

As an Oxford lad and inklings fan. I visited Tolkien's grave (and chair) a few times. I try to watch the films every year too .His good friend C.S Lewis is laid to rest at Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry.

Hi Paul another great addition to the Unusual Things series, just wanted to say Thankyou for revisiting Wolvercote and filming Tolkiens final resting place as promised. Would you be able to give a word on when you might be headed to Ipswich to visit Sir Alf Ramsay’s grave. I realise many people will be interested to see this one as Sir Alf brought about England’s finest sporting hour when he delivered on his promise to bring the coveted Jules Rimet Trophy to England. Also if you diversify the series to include things of great interest, you may be interested to discover that the replica Jules Rimet Trophy which was cast when the original was stolen in 1966 is still in existance in the national football museum in Manchester along with the original orange ball used in the 66 final. Incidentally, after pickles the dog found the original trophy hidden under a bush in London, it was used for the presentation at Wembley, but was substituted for the replica for all offical engagements during England reign as World Champions. The original was then lost forever after being stolen in Brazil and melted down. Since a new trophy was then commissioned, the replica was retained by the F.A. Cheers Paul.

Tolkien's books aren't my cup of tea but I think a biography would be a fascinating read. A couple of authors whose graves you might want to visit are C.S. Lewis (Narnia)and Arthur Ransome. Ransome is buried in the Lake District. He was a reporter in Moscow during the Russian Revolution and was believed to be a spy. The Russians thought he was a British spy......... and the British thought he was spying for the Russians. One day, Paul, a church will be open!

Paul you should come to Derby and do Mick Philpott, he has been on the Jeremy Kyle show, was interviewed at his home by Ann Widdecombe, he was responsible for all of his 6 children dying in a house fire, also many years ago I went to school with a girl and he broke into her mothers house in the middle of the night stabbing her and her mother, the day after all his children died he was in his local pub singing suspicious minds, when he was arrested he tried to chat the police officer up.

The book is always better than the film adaptation. Sometimes the film adaptation is excellent; Kes and To Kill A Mocking Bird are twwo examples.

He had an association with parts of Staffordshire and several sites in the area gave him inspiration for his books. There is an established Tolkien 'walk' which is popular and takes in scenes which Tolkien loved. My friend while at University spent a lot of time reading his books much to my amazement - i wasn't impressed but it takes all sorts. I don't recall much of a fuss being made when Tolkien died. This was before the films of course. Hos career was very interesting and I thought your description was good. Why did you miss out his time in the army?

Information only; "Beren and Luthien - It is the story of the love and adventures of the mortal man Beren and the immortal Elf-maiden Luthien. Tolkien found the inspiration for many of the ideas presented in the tale in his love for his wife (Edith) and after her death had "Luthien" engraved on her tombstone, and later "Beren" on his own." Sorry I can't find what the badge writing means, I'll keep looking. Happy New Year.

Man that's cool Paul your doing J.R.R. Tolkien , I have all three deluxe DVD set the movie that came out in early 2000. There green cover,brown cover, and yellow cover. They look like a leather bound deluxe book. They give you the details in the special dicks there 6 DVDs in each one, Lord of the Rings the Two Towers, and so on.
