Rooting fig cuttings and other plants that propagate from cuttings. This method works quickly to develop roots and to propagate plants from cuttings. With though to root plants the best approach to propagate them is to do an Air Layer (check my video on this technique in the channel - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKqshIqAp66fja8) These videos require lots of time and effort to make. Show me your appreciation by Liking the video and Leaving a Comment. Share the video and, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing the channel to help me make more videos. Thanks for watching.

Another excellent video production. Thank you. There are a large number of KZbin commentators on a broad spectrum of plant and tree management. Yours stand head and shoulders above the crowd. I enjoy the clear and concise manner in which you deliver information. And your pros and cons explanations. I revisit your videos on a frequent basis. They have helped me with both my own "food forest" management and my formal educational study in Horticulture. I live South East of the metro area of Melbourne, Australia and grow ~40 different fruit types. With varying levels of success. Our climate is temperate with no snow and only occasional frost in winter. The other three seasons tend to blend with mid-spring to mid autumn temperatures in the mid 20C range, punctuated with 3-4 days in the mid to high 30C range. I have two different Fig trees; Black Genoa, and White Alpine. They fruit well. A video on pot grown figs would be personally useful. I have spare space for pots but not for additional planting in the garden. Best wishes in health and happiness. 😀 👍

I have waited patiently for your Updated Version. Last year I’ve tried the previous version and it had 100% rooting success …the transplanting and caring for the rooted plants proved to be another story …while I’ve lost only like 10-15 % of the plants mostly due to Bad Management on my side I just received the solutions to my problems. Can’t wait to start my rooting tomorrow! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I love your videos, they are great! I have great success using aloe vera for all my cloning. Cut a hole in a cut piece of aloe vera, put the prepared/scraped cutting into the aloe vera for 30 seconds. You'll see a colour change blue/black on the stem of the cutting in the following days. Yes, a video on containerized fig & other fruit trees would be great. I can grow figs in the ground here, but have to grow them in a screened area to keep the birds and other animals away, so my space for that is limited. Also, I'm thinking of just cutting the plants to the ground each spring and sacrificing any potential breba crop just to keep the plants small.

@JSacadura

google translate: Excellent video, thank you! I always root figs in separate containers. The main reason for cuttings falling out is poor air access to the container, so I highly recommend using small containers with numerous holes at the initial stage. Then, when the roots get stronger, I just carefully transfer them to a large container. Kiwi cuttings root very poorly due to the rapid start of buds - there are leaves but no roots. Therefore, it is necessary to slow down the leaves in every possible way. Here, either paraffin or film on the buds. Kiwi needs at least 60 days, while figs sometimes need 20. Good luck! ______________________ Thanks for the tips. I had good luck with my kiwis. Almost all the cuttings had good root development. They just take a bit longer and you have to be patient. Some of my apple rootstocks are much more difficult and root poorly. I think I will try air layering them instead. ________________________ Спасибо за советы.

Enjoyed that a lot - thanks for doing!! Yes, I'd love to see a video on potted trees. 98% of my trees are in pots. And barely get four hours of sun. It's rough. Have you compared the coco coir against Pro-Mix HP?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 13 күн бұрын
That's one of the problems I worry with doing that type of video. Being in zone 9a, I'm no where near the type of conditions you guys have to face. So, my experience would not be meaningful to a significant part of the potential viewers. Well see... Regarding Pro-Mix, it's not easily available on this side of the pond so, no experience with it. Another problem is, since I root in an improvised greenhouse and the temperatures can get a bit high inside, on some spring days, I don't think it would work for me, being a low water retention product. It seems a great product for those who have problems with cuttings rotting, though. I'm quite happy using coco coir. I particularly like that the change in color reflects the level of humidity it has.

I have rooted a mulberry tree and a rose of sharon. Thanks again.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 13 күн бұрын
Roots that develop in water usually have a difficult time adapting to soil mixes and most die when up-potting. If you root indoors or in a temperature controlled environment, you can start rooting much earlier than March. Otherwise, it's a good idea to wait for late winter to start the cuttings.

Your best bet is using some kind of plant frost protection like a frost cloth. These work great and can be cut to protect individual trees if they are grown in pots and small enough to use this option. I use them to protect my young citrus trees in the first years. Otherwise, they would die with the frost.

@JSacadura 13 күн бұрын
They require much attention, precise conditions and time (immature cuttings, rooting hormone, bottom heat, daily spray mist and about 5 to 7 months to produce roots - and success percentage is variety dependent). That's why air layer (or grafting to a suitable rootstock) is preferred, as a propagation method.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 13 күн бұрын
Sorry. Over here cherries are always grafted to suitable rootstocks as they grow much better that way than on their own roots, so I have no experience rooting them. If they are so difficult to root, try air layering them. It's the "go-to" option when rooting cuttings proves difficult.
@proctormacbelle4904
@proctormacbelle4904 13 күн бұрын
@@JSacadura thank you! when air layering (and also when pre-rooting), how long does the container or wrap typically stay on the branch? is it weeks, months, or maybe a full year? it's hard for me to tell in the air layering video.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 11 күн бұрын
It depends on the fruit type. With easier to root types it stays around 2-3 months. With harder to root types in can be 6 months or more. Until you have the experience, you will have to check for root growth (that's why I use transparent containers wrapped in aluminium foil for that purpose). When I know the usual rooting time, I switch to opaque containers (no need to cover them with aluminium foil, just plastic film to avoid dehydration).

Muito obrigado, Mr Sacadura! What a video! Just a small question: You seem to be using clonex gel for semi hardwood cuttings also on hardwood cuttings taken in the winter. I have the same gel and always wondered if I have to take this direction seriously. What is your opinion on that?
@AlexZettt1
@AlexZettt1 12 күн бұрын
You are mentioning how you treat valuable cuttings the way you presented because you want to minimize the risk. I try to do that, too, and was thinking if grafting scions to established fig trees could be a strategy to minimize failure with rare and/or expensive cuttings even more? I could let them grow out and then take cuttings from the grafted parts next year or in the winter. But be much more relaxed regarding my chances. :-) Do you have thoughts on that? Thanks again for your great work!
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 11 күн бұрын
The rooting hormone is more for some piece of mind. That way, you know you have provided the cutting with all that is needed for success. The cuttings would also work without them, but they would take longer. Longer rooting equals the possibility of more problems, so I prefer to use the hormone. The hormone works quite well on hardwood cuttings, you just have to give it access to the inner soft tissues. That's why you do a fresh cut and scrape the bark.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 11 күн бұрын
If you check one of my earlier grafting videos (so old, that it doesn't even have a voice over) you will see that I'm a great believer in fig grafting. A few years ago I was much more confident grafting than rooting. When grafting, you use the energy of the rootstock to help the scion. When rooting, the cutting has to do it all on its own, using its own reserves and they might not be sufficient. Specially, if it's a small cutting. Grafting, it's the sure way to know that a precious variety is not lost due to a problem with rooting. When I receive a single small cutting of a rare variety, I don't root it. I graft it. I use the bottom bud (that would be lost when cutting to do a grafting technique) and use it for a chip-bud graft. Then, I use the upper part to do a whip and tongue or a modified cleft graft. And I will do an air layer of the grafted branches in the following year. That way, it never fails and I never loose a precious variety. I had an example with some photos, in the video I mentioned (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmWufZiaqKiGgZY after min5.55). But, most people never see it. I have to make a new video on the subject to make this point more clear. If I keep it short, I might be able to fit it in my schedule, in the next couple of months.

Me podria indicar si realiza venta de esquejes. Estoy interesada en algunas variedades de frutales. Gracias de nuevo. Galicia.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 11 күн бұрын

Is "Strawberry Teardrop" the very red skinned fig? Super pretty whatever it's name was. :)
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 11 күн бұрын
No. That variety is a green fig. The red skinned one is a variety from Israel (Khurtmani - also known as Red Israel).

Boa noite caro @JSacadura…!

Agradeço a compreensão.

It is very strange that you spend a lot of time and focus on the watering and humidity, even rooting hormones, but completely missed the other major factor - the temperature. Why? I'm not criticizing, however it is important to touch on that environment factor. Having a good temperature range makes for strong and quick rooting. I've observed that in the range of 25-26C cuttings start making roots in 7-10 days, thus reducing the risks of the early stage cutting rot.

You're completely right! In the first years of rooting I was always looking for ways of keeping my cuttings at the right temperature. I used to place the boxes of cuttings over the glass of the aquarium to keep them warm, so I could start rooting earlier in the season. After, I used warming mats. In the last few years I do my rooting in an improvised greenhouse, where the temperature is just right, in the months I tend to do my rooting (February-March-April). So, the temperature stopped bein a factor to me and I started to concentrate on the other issues that could make my cuttings fail. When I started to write the text for this video, I didn't even give temperature a second though - just unforgivable, now that you remind me of it. And a significant flaw for the viewer that wants to start rooting. I do mention the issue in some on my early videos but, after so much work put into the video, I'm amazed how I could let such an important factor of it. Oh, well. Something to correct in a future video on the subject. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
