In this video, I am covering how to lunge a horse for beginners without a round pen. Learning how to lunge a horse is such a wonderful tool to build your horse's top line, wind capacity, and strengthen the relationship between you and your horse. I could cover a lot more topics related to lunging horses but wanted to start by giving you the basics here. If you are not comfortable with this you can start lunging in a round pen and then move to lunge without a round pen as I show you here. In future videos, I could cover topics more advanced like how to lunge a horse over obstacles, how to lunge to build confidence, or lunging to build a horse's top line. Feel free to leave a comment with any questions 😊 and I'll talk to you in the next video!

Hello I'm a big fan and you really help a lot❤. Can you please help me with my worst problem please? Whenever I'm in a trot my horse keeps wanting to go faster and trying to canter, he keeps trying to pull the rains out of my hands. I wouldn't call him green but he is young. Thank you if you can help me❤

Absolutely the BEST info I've found on lunging! Clear, concise, comprehensive, and covered the basics most others avoid; ie, how to hold the rope, & explanations of what to do with your body & hands, etc. The only thing I might ask for is a more clear view of the whip, & when you're using it. Keep up the great videos!

I've just gotten back into riding by taking on a mellow 17 yo horse with some arthritis who needs some attention and is to be ridden by my special needs sister. These tips are both a great refresher and so valuable to learn to do things right-- I trained a horse in my teens a good 40 years ago lol. He definitely needs "encouragement" and I know he sees I'm rusty, so I can't wait to show up tomorrow and give him a surprise! He is super sweet and I am so grateful to be back with horses and spend quality time with my sis. GREAT Video, especially the transition s. Breaking down how to exactly hold the line was very helpful. Are there alternatives to using a whip while lunging?
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa 😊 I’m so glad the video is a help💕 One alternative to the whip is using the end of your line to motivate your horse . If the horse your working isn’t responding to your voice or body language in the upward transition you can twirl the end of the line. It does require some skill handling the line to use this method affectionately. If you are new to Lunging a whip is often an easier tool to learn to use😀🐴

Hi, thank you so much for producing this great video - I will be watching more for sure. You have a great calmness and obviously a fantastic relationship with your horse. I'm only now at 48 getting my first horse (a 3yr green broken Gypsy Cob) and being a very green rider myself will be needing to soak up all the skills and knowledge before he arrives next month. I'm reading LOTS about the different preferences for halter and bridles used for lunging - could I please ask what you're using on your horse in this video or whether you can suggest a good option for a rider and horse both still learning? THANK YOU :) Vibeke @ Australia

@JSHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
Hi 😀 I’m so glad the video is a help💕 🐴 Congratulations on your new horse! Gypsy Cobs are so cute😊 I love that you are growing in your knowledge. I am using a rope halter in this video. I have also lunged quite a bit in a bridle. I would recommend starting in a rope halter. In my experience It gives you a better ability to successfully direct and support a horse than traditional nylon or leather. When I have a young horse and new rider I like lunging in a halter over a bit 💕

Thank you for your wonderfully informative videos! Wish we were besties haha. Stay well beautiful soul!
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lexi 😊 Thanks for the positivity ❤️ I do work on cantering on the lunge once my horse is doing good at the walk and trot. Here are a few thing that have helped me with horse that are not very forward. First I check that my horse is responding to my ask to go forward even if it’s only for a few strides. Next I’ll work on making sure I’m quiet and still. This means avoiding over driving or continually asking for more forward. It’s important to me that the horse learns to move on his own. With this in mind if my horse gives me a few strides in the canter I try to bring him down before he breaks to trot. Doing short distances of canner at the beginning can be motivating for a horse who is not naturally forward. Once he’s maintaining short distance confidently I will gradually increase the distance. As with everything in training timing and release are very important. I hope this helps 💕 keep up the good work🐎

@JSHorsemanship

I’m so glad you found it helpful 😀 One thing I do to get my horses out on the circle is sending the inside shoulder away from me. If I have a horse who really struggles with this I will do some work in-hand and teach the horse to step away on command. Once they understand it in-hand I put them back on the lunge and use the same cue I did in-hand.

Welcome to the channel😊 She sounds amazing. Lusitano’s are such beautiful horses. I think starting on the lunge is a great idea. I always start on the ground when bringing horses back into work after time off. I like to do work in hand and stretching on the lunge to help build some top line before starting back to riding. Here is a video on some basic in hand work that may be a help to you.🐴

I really want to try and get my horse to work on the lung line but he recently had his eye on his left side removed because of an infection plus he was already blind in it so I feel like that is going to be a challenge when lunging also I haven’t really worked him on a lung line before so I’m not sure if he knows what to do.

Hi Emma😊 I have worked on teaching a couple horses who were blind in one eye to lunge. I taught them by using voice commands. I started on the lead line and first worked on teaching them some basic commands. Things like go forward, step away and whoa. After they were responsive to the commands on the lead line I started working them at a further distance on the lunge. It took some patience and time but in the end they both successfully learned to lunge🐴

Hi Sophia and Lucy😊 With out seeing you work with him it is difficult to give you advise. One thing I like to do is work on the ground doing different exercises to help improve my horse’s relaxation and focus on me. I am considering doing a course on ground work in the future to go more in-depth on this. Until then you can submit a video for me to review on my website or I recommend reaching out to a qualified professional in your area.

I have a 7 year old horse I just recently acquired. I notice times when, lunging in the trot, he is somehow triggered to act explosively(rapid canter and bucking). How to address this?

With out seeing you and your horse it is difficult to give you exact advice in this. One thing that I have found to be helpful in improving my horses calmness on the lunge is doing in hand-work prior to Lunging.

Hi, Without seeing your horse it is hard to give you exact advice. With that said one thing that has worked for me when solving this issue is working on drawing the horse to me and changing direction. This helps to keep the horse focused and relaxed on me while lunging.🐴 If you would like more help with this you can submit a video for me to review on my website. JShorsemanship.com

I’m doing something wrong. My horse spirals in closer and closer. So I’m not sure how to teach him to move in to a bigger circle. I’m so baffled
Lunging can be a very dangerous activity
