Hey John, Im a 14 year old kid who has grown up around Gardiners bay and loves fishing. I was wondering if you have any tips on finding stripers on the actual bay seeing as I've struggled to get on a bite when I'm not in the back harbor. Also wanted to tell you to keep up the great work and to continue making amazing, entertaining content!

Try as best you can to fish sunrise and sunset. This video was almost entirely recorded before 5:30 a.m. The 30 minutes either side of sunset can be equally good. Look for current and edges, and be careful.

1/2, 3/4, 1 oz take either forever to fall to the bottom and rise way too high. Tried 2 oz bucktail, swims low enough most of the time, but also can rise some 4 feet off the bottom… trying 3 oz. tomorrow night. Had a nice 27 inch short hit the 1/2 oz vertically jigging. But I’d like to cover more water by swimming.

Hey John love the video, quick question. I wanna fish this spot near me that i know for sure definitely has bass its a small pier right next to a giant bridge and it seems that all the bass are under the bridge however the current is ridiculously strong flowing from the pier to the bridge. How would you go about fishing something like this? (Its the mini ponqoqaue bridge I’m sure you’ve heard of it)
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
Definitely bucktails. You can dial in the weight to match the current.
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
You may need to target the slower currents, like 90 minutes either side of slack.

Hey John, why do you use swivels instead of knots to connect your leader to your main line. I'm getting guys telling me knots are better for the rod guides. But they still hang up when I cast. I believe the swivels.
@amos619052 жыл бұрын
His leader doesn’t go through the guides. It’s like 3-4ft long and the swivel never touches the guides. No line twist with the swivel and I trust my knots better on the swivel.
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
Could not have answered that better.
@fotoconcept2 жыл бұрын
True facts. Thanks.
@Tyler-kw9ce2 жыл бұрын
I fish FL mainly for big snook. And throw 8-9 foot rods 30-40lb braid and 80lb leader. I use an FG knot for my connection and never cast it through my guides just use 2 1/2 to 3 foot of leader. I don't believe any knot will cast smoothly through your guides.
@bassblanker53592 жыл бұрын
Great video as always, informative and entertaining. Hope you don’t mind, but, living in the UK there is constant arguments about the right knot to connect the braid mainline to the fluoro leader, but, I notice you use a swivel. Could you please let me know the benefits of using the swivel instead of a knot?
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
I feel those are more secure and faster knots on the ends of the swivel vs braid to mono, plus the swivel reduces line twist.

Hey John I was wondering if you’ve lost a lot of big bass in your days? My best bass is a 45” ~35 pounder but last year I lost about 7 fish that I believe to have been 45+ pounds and I just can’t seem to get over them and beat myself up about it every time fishing season comes around. I was fortunate to get a nice 30+ pounder last year but those darn 40+ never fail to outsmart me in some way. I’ve had nightmares about my biggest bass that I’ve lost. Do you have any stories about losing a monster? Fishing is so enjoyable yet makes me miserable sometimes. I’ve even lost a few monsters to a darn grey seal snatching it off my line. Just can’t seem to win with them as of yet and with the current state of the fishery seeming to be on the decline not sure if the time will ever come
@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
I hope this doesn't jinx me, but no, I recall just one. The hook pulled on a low forty right in front of me. Sharp hooks, tight initial drag, hard and multiple hooksets. That will tilt the odds in your favor.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you John I will apply this next time I go out I hope you have a great season !

In my experience most fish are lost by not setting the drag properly and reeling in to hard when the fish is making a strong run. But sounds like you're doing pretty good as far as being in the right spots.. I've never had a seal steal a fish though!

@JohnSkinnerFishing2 жыл бұрын
Amazingly, I'm not all that moved by the return of Pork Rind. I actually never ran out because I hoarded so much years ago. The Otter Tails and Fat Cow Jig Strips work just fine and are more convenient and less messy. That said, choice is a good thing. I was in Plum Gut an hour ago and used the new UJ70. It's good.
