Hi John, with all your analysis over the years re gulp, bucktails, rods, drift speeds, etc , do you have any data that relates catching to time of day, especially in the bays?
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 жыл бұрын
The only thing I have is that I've never done well very early in the morning in the Sound at buoys 7 and 5, which are the shoals. I've fished them enough to believe it's a thing there, maybe related to sandeels. I've not had that problem anywhere else.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing in my childhood, 950"s, we fluke fished Fire Island inlet and now in NJ at Barnegat. The bay side bite always seemed more productive between 5:30a and 8:30a and would then slow down. The ocean side didn't seem to matter. Thanks for the great videos and tips. Stay safe.

We were flounder fishing last wee week on Long Beach Island. We caught a ton of flounder (Fluke) and all but a couple hit the teaser, not the bucktail. Very odd to see yours hitting the bucktail and not the teaser.
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 жыл бұрын
Whenever I hear or see someone say almost all of their fish are on the teaser, I tell them something is wrong with their bucktail. It's probably too heavy. The ratio of teaser to bucktail catches should be close to 50:50, with maybe a slight edge to the teaser.
@davidhagler61574 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you for taking the time to respond. My son and I have a great time catching flounder thanks to your informative videos and your books (and I bought your class on SaltStrong). I will change the bucktail size next time and see if we can get that ratio closer to 50/50. Since were catching, I didn't want to change too much.

Hey John, I’m down in Monmouth county. I’ve gone out 8 days in a row. Navesink river, Sandy hook, highlands, Atlantic highlands, and a few beach spots. I can’t seem to get a fluke for the life of me! I feel like I am missing something. I always fish from the shore. Using a buck tail setup with either squid strips or gulp. I have used both 4in white and 6in salmon color. Not sure what I could be doing wrong. I just want to catch fish!

A little courtesy from passing motorboats would be appreciated. Was out in Barnegat Bay a few weeks ago in the kayak. In the morning, most boaters slowed down and gave a wide berth. As the afternoon went on the morons came out and some were actually trying to swamp me. They dont seem to care that someone could die due to their stupidity.

Those boat swell can easily be handled sideways with proper balance and keeping your paddle handy. Now, to be sure I have a lot of whitewater experience that most SOT fishermen don't, but it can be learned. In a boat with no loose gear to lose and your paddle ready to brace yourself try a wave sideways, the trick is not let it tilt the hull, use your butt and knees to keep it and you upright. In whitewater wave trains we'd roll over 6' or bigger waves sideways all the time. And there's no reason to lose rigs ever. I have an 6" piece of pool noodle attached by a foot of paracord to my rod butts. It allows you to fish without a leash, and doesn't interfere with bottom fishing or casting. I've tested it and it can float a 4000 reel. Test video kzbin.info/www/bejne/maWzf4KjidCMopo
