Congrats on the 100K well deserved. I just caught my personal best flounder the day after the storm, it was a 23inch 4.25lb fish off the surf in NJ! I started using bucktails exclusively this year for fluke and I’ve caught more this year then any other. Thank you for the knowledge, you have definitely helped me grow as an angler.

John love this spot , caught my first ever striper off of my kayak not too far off too your right there where the channel starts day before Father’s Day , going to have to fluke in that area sooner than later. Good to know if conditions are right that island is a good place to fish when I’m sick of paddling. Thanks for the vids and congrats you deserve the subs.

Where is this spot on Long Island?
@gm19374 жыл бұрын
Hi John a fellow fisherman told me that the rapid jigging attracts the sea robins, and if you instead employ a very slow retrieve with occasional but very brief rapid retrieves, tap tap or tap tap tap, and back to very slow again, you are less likely to get the attention of the sea robins. I have tried it myself and it seems to make a difference. I was wondering if you've ever tried this or something similar.

I have that exact same rod and it’s amazing! It’s got a real good back bone and it’s my light setup for stripers
@MattsKennels3 жыл бұрын
@Steven GENNERO Bootz depending on the size lure ur using. Anything over 2.5oz would put somewhat stress onto the rod in my opinion. I use a medium heavy and buck tails under 2ish seem ok

The searobin problem is definitely a cultural thing. Most Americans (NE Tri-State Americans.....) do not like searobins or are too ashamed to admit that searobins are delicious. This purely out of stigma. I'm guilty of it too, theyre definitely delicious and yet I am reluctant to keep too many of them. (I do like keeping a trophy size searobing from time to time). But I won't hesitate to keep any keeper size flounder. As Landshark Fishing said ," theres no such thing as trash fish, just trash cooks". I think that statement holds very true. A straight up salt and peppper fish fry recipe doesnt work with every fish. You have to explore different cooking techniques and flavor profiles. Don't be afraid to explore different ingredients outside of the usual spices in your cupboard. Salt, pepper and thyme will only get you so far. Try certain curries combined with coconut, or thai chilis, or try searobins sashimi style. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2qaaX98fbWCpKM . Fluke honestly is some of the most boring fish to eat straight out of the cooler, but preparation is everything to make a good meal.

John, I couldn't help noticing like almost all flukes were caught on upper hook baited with sand eel . I've couple of thoughts then. Have you ever tried a drop-shot style or Carolina rigs there? The second one is, could change of your lure to a 10 or 20 gr microjig or a sinking or suspended hard-bait make a difference and fend off those pesky sea robins? Thanks.
@JohnSkinnerFishing4 жыл бұрын
The searobins will hit everything. Normally I get close to a 50:50 split with the bucktail/teaser, but I do notice they really go after that sandeel on a plain hook more than anything in these shallow casting settings. Have not done dropshot or carolina rig.
