The old drums had rims that had warped a bit over time and the bearing edge on some of them was a little worn (I know my drum 2 had a chip out when I was assigned a set), so we often had to reef them up (esp tuning via overtones). We always tried to rotate at least two lugs around with each head change, so it did prevent further damage. Those drums had years of wear and tear. But yes, they were absolutely reefed up. Lol. The new Pearl Championships they have now are remarkable though.
