What Went Wrong? And I Bought 7 1/2 Cars!

Man this car has been an uphill battle the whole way. After being parked in a junkyard with the windows down and the spark plugs out for 30 years the engine was completely seized up and we had no luck at all getting it running. Then we took the block to the machine shop to get it sleeved and rebuilt just to find out there was to much rust in the water passages for it to be usable. After that we did a budget rebuild on a 90's 5.0 engine with a few upgrades just to get it running and driving and the transmission got hung up in 2nd gear. So now in this video we are going to tear down the transmission to find out what went wrong inside, and decide if we are going to rebuild it or replace it with a more modern overdrive transmission. Oh and I buy a bunch of cars at the end lol.

I love the picture-postcard scene of the whole family gathered together UNDER THE CAR while dad pulls the transmission. The togetherness of a close family is touching. It reminds me of when my family gathered around the dinner table or Christmas tree and well, it's kinda like the same, just under a car...okay different.
@danafaulhaber334
@danafaulhaber334 9 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you except I think the family gathering underneath a vehicle is alot better than around the dinner table/Christmas tree.. While underneath a vehicle everyone is learning something even the 1 who is doing the teaching to the others is most likely learning something about the vehicle they are under aswell.. Yet either 1 is a great thing specially for the youngins bc having a family that is close like that does wonders for the youngins mental health (aslong as there isn't any type of abuse happening) unless being around the tree/dinner table is being faked for the photo opportunity or just bc its a holiday..

My family had a '63 Galaxy wagon built on a Monday. Had problems from the start. Ford dealers from Alabama to California and back could not get it to run right. It was the first and last Ford my Dad ever bought. It was the first engine overhaul I ever did. Only had 25000 miles. I remember many uncomfortable miles in the 3rd seat. I would not spend any time trying to refurbish that bucket of rust. I do LOVE you guys. We enjoy watching you'll every week.

Having been in Art classes from an early age for several years(MANY years ago) Im fully impressed at Squeezs talents and imagination for her art..WOW factor, Also likin to see WaWa getting more involved and hands on..some of my best memories were in the shops helping family and learning. I dont consider myself a master of Anything but learning at a young age helped me further in life not only career wise (light mechanic work and Autobody shops) but also being able to work on your own venicles saves money and gives you a sense of pride succeed or fail, its always learning experiences..Josh and Tish you have a great bunch of future self sufficiant children. My Daughter loves the trips to salvage yards and is always asking questions when with me in the shop..however now she cant move without a phone in her hands...My Son only moves from his games to eat...and washroom.. Keep rockin it guys you are the future

Not sure if someone mentioned this already, but you can swap the tail shaft housing from a Chevy S10 T5 onto the Mustang T5. This moves the shifter forward so you could keep the bench seat and possibly the shifter hole that's in the floor, already too. There's something you have to do with the speedometer, but not exactly sure what. Do a search for the swap and you'll find all the details. Good luck with the project!

I think you hit the nail on the head when you first said the case was broken due to water freezing. As much rust that is in that transmission I would not doubt that one single bit and then you have busted teeth as well. One thing I can say for sure that's one beautiful Old Wagon definitely worth taking care of. I remember my dad's Comet wagon had a 289 in it we were just kids back then but it was pretty quick for what it was, pretty little yellow wagon. Anyhow Josh many blessings to you and your family as always

I watched this video a couple of days ago, and was put in mind of my 66 Fairlane wagon, with a 289 and a 3-speed w/overdrive. The clutch linkage had been taken out, and the front end had suffered in an accident, but I only paid $35 for it...I found some linkage, and bought a similar-vintage Falcon with a 302 and an automatic; I cut our the radiator support and used it and the radiator in the 66. I found black fenders and a gold GT hood, and put it all on the blue wagon. We drove it 7,500 miles in 20 days, with 10 days parked visiting family. I loved that car. It had a whining 2nd gear which finally broke, so I had a T-10 4-speed to put in. I really preferred the 3-speed. I sold this car for some reason, and wish I still had it!

Tech tip for Ralphie: For really tight bolts/nuts, use two combination wrenches. Slip the box end of the extra wrench over the open end of the wrench on the fastener. That will give you extra leverage without hanging from the wrench.

Haven't fooled with old manual trans in 50 years, but here goes. Think of the 'clutch/input shaft as part of the case (it isn't, but go with me). The main shaft with all the gears/synchros gets inserted into the back of the input shaft, the joint supported/kept aligned by needle bearings you insert by hand (there is no cage, only you and lots of heavy grease). If the crankshaft bushing or tranny housing front bearing is worn, the two shafts will flex, eventually wrecking the needle bearings. When there's enough flex, even if the gears don't destroy themselves, the tranny will wan't to pop into neutral when under load. Eventually, it WILL make metal. This can also be caused by messing up the needle bearings during assembly (one drops out of place and gets crushed), or trying to remove the tail housing to service a seal or gasket without holding the tail shaft firmly forward to preven needles from falling out. You've probably figured out by now that nothing comes apart until the cluster gear is dropped down out of the way. Always remember, those needles are always waiting for a moment of inattention so they can make a break for it.

First off I love manual shift wagons. Was watching Hagerty channel and on one episode he bought a running Ford Galaxy SW special order from factory with a 428 ci 4 sd manual approx the same year as yours. I have two suggestions for you on this build one is put a 4 sp toploader back in and change the rear gear to a 3.55 posi. Also Puddin did a SW same as yours and he found a place that had perfect fit floor pans from back to front, might want to give him a call.

That’s the wrong transmission for that bell housing. Previous owner drilled through holes to mount the early narrow 3 speed to the later wide top loader pattern bell, hence the bolt/nut disaster. Since you have it apart you should just put a late model bell/T5 in it.

The TREMEC T-5 is a 5-speed manual transmission for longitudinal engine automobiles. It includes one overdrive gear, a lightweight aluminum housing, and adaptability for four wheel drive use. It is currently manufactured by TREMEC. Good choice for that beautiful 302.

Your transmission exploration reminds me of when I watched my Dad rebuild the three speed transmission for our Jeep pickup in the spring of 1978. We ordered all new gears , bearings and other parts from a company in California called Four Wheel parts wholesalers. They had every part necessary except for the reverse idler gear which we sourced locally. That three speed transmission was always the weak link in that truck and was the second rebuild for it in 1978. It came from the factory with a syncro mesh that was not de burred and my Uncle actually broke the shift lever off the steering column trying to get it into gear, necessitating a floor shifter replacement.

The big ashtray built into the back of the front seat is something else. Back then, ashtrays were like cupholders are today-every passenger has at least one. I dunno if the seat could be saved but it will take a lot of tedious work to do so. I think I'd just go with some bucket seats in front and use that T5. Yet another awesome video as always from the best creators on YT!

Back in 1977 , I was in 8th grade , Dad brought home a wagon like that one , black outside , red inside , 289 , 3 on the tree , car was absolutely perfect all over , loud duals and gangster white walls on chrome reverse wheels with factory dog dish caps. I loved that car . He bought it from a used car dealer for $900

I love station wagons! The bigger and more battle ship like the better! When I was young my parents had a Ford Fairmont sedan with the 6 cyl engine. I remember that car and I totally get why you love them. I love watching the videos you guys post! There are a lot of “family” channels on KZbin but none as cool as you guys!

7 1/2 cars, now that's outstanding!!! A Ford toploader or side loader factory 4 speed manual transmission would be a great alternative to the 3 speed. Desert Valley Auto Parts in Arizona might have body panels you could use on your Galaxy wagon. A great road trip episode!! Buckeees!!

Rhere wasn't any problem with those synchronizers, Josh. It was a problem with alignment of them and the gears. This was due to the fact that the cast iron case was causing that misalignment issue. It's quite a shame that the case was broken. I hope you find another one of them.
