How many countries in the world can you live in a world class city yet be so close to such natural beauty! Thanks for sharing your adventure and especially for highlighting the gear.

It is so very wonderful that you can live your dreams and balance, your home life with your trail life. Keep doing it! If you get old like me, you’ll be regretting every time you didn’t walk out the door.

I live on V.I. too and backcountry camp frequently. Very early on I switched to dehydrating my own meals. After a long day on the trail the body needs refueling. As a novice, often I would consume an entire manufactured dehydrated. A meal that was meant for two, with the sodium level for 6, or 8.

Just after 12:20, that's a sea lion. Their forehead is more 'neanderthal' compared to the typical harbor seal. Love your videos, Juan de Fuca is the last of the big hikes still on my bucket list.

Really enjoyed this video. I've backpacked the WCT and in Cape Scott PP but never the Juan de Fuca Trail, hopefully sometime soon. I hope you don't mind a gear switch recommendation. Get rid of the Sawyer Squeeze bag and replace it with GNOC 28mm Vecto Water Container. I've hiked extensively in the Sierra, including the JMT, and this item was a game changer for me. All the best!

Always appreciate gear tips! I’ll look into that option for sure. I was thinking for my long distance hike this year I want an additional ability to carry more water for longer dry stretches. I hope you get to hike the Juan de Fuca one day! WCT and Cape Scott are also so amazing!

Awesome gear upgrades, your pack must be feeling lighter!! I also have the Durston pack, how do you like it? We've been making similar changes to lighten our pack weight and something that worked surprisingly well to simplify and lighten our cooking system was to each just bring a sealed plastic jar as our "bowl" (we got ours from litesmith) and make a homemade insulated cozy for each one. This allowed us to bring a much lighter stove and a small, light titanium pot (1.3L) that we only boiled water in. Our homemade dehydrated meals turned out great using this method and clean up was so easy. We could also make overnight oats super easily having the sealed jar.

Love that idea!! We did something similar at one point but moved away from it for some reason. I really like the idea of being able to make overnight oats. I had those every morning on the CLDT and quite liked it. It’s fun to try to lighten the pack. I love my Durston pack - no collar bone pain or swelling at all! I cried tears of joy 😭😍

I like all your videos. Always so beautiful. I might hit JFT this summer as well didn’t get a spot in WCT. I’m on the market for a new tent and was looking at the durston x mid 2. Would it fit two persons and a dog (not the dog on the JFT) for future trips?

We don’t camp with a dog so it’d be hard to say - but we certainly love that tent for the two of us 👍 sorry if that’s not the helpful

Great video! It's good to see another of your hiking videos in a beautiful area of Canada I've only visited for a couple of days. Looking forward to more of them. What kind of pegs do you use on the platforms? Do you bring some kind of nails?
@KrystaNorwick

Glad you enjoyed it!! I love this area of Canada! We ended up using nails to stake out the corners of the tent. We plan to bring nails with us when we know we’ll be on platforms

How did you find trail runners both here and WCT? There is always a huge push for boots on the WCT. We just got a spot for this summer 👏🏻👏🏻 but I always wear trail runners for backpacking and would rather not switch to boots. Also, how was your x-mid on the beach spots. We love our xmid but have had trouble on the beach before. Should we just bring our big Agnes free standing tent or were you glad you had your xmid for those trails?

I was big believer of using boots until 2020 when I had my first pair of Altras. I was a big fan of the trail runners on this trail and the WCT. For the tent, we learned that having a few construction nails was helpful when camping on the wooden tent platforms. Some extra cord to wrap the tent corners on rocks when camped on the beach. Cheers

How was it to set up the X-Mid on a platform? Beautiful hike. No wonder BCs license plates used to say “BC Pacific Playground”

We weren’t exactly sure how to do it, so we ended up using nails to stake out the 4 corners and that worked really well.

You can park your car at either trailhead. And there is a shuttle called the West Coast Express you can catch. Just pre-book on their website or by phone if you can ☺️
