@daltonmiller55902 жыл бұрын
@@Todomo Definitely. For some people, it is indeed a cheap excuse to avoid working out/eating healthy. But everyone is different. Steven here seemed to be suffering from body dysmorphia, food addiction, and likely also depression. When you're in that state of mind, getting healthy is extremely difficult. Not only would he have to fight and beat his addiction on a daily basis, but he would also be battling fatigue, temptation, apathy, and even his own identity. For many, this fight seems hopeless or impossible, and this only fuels the depression. It is a desperate last measure, and that is why this procedure is only recommended by doctors to patients on the very heavy end of the weight spectrum. Sabrina didn't share quite as much of what she is going through as Steven did, but she may very well be going through the same things. Her choice is something I'm sure she's done a lot of thinking about and is definitely something she has discussed thoroughly and and gotten approval for from her doctor.

This was surprisingly better than I thought it was going to be, I really think the blindfolding made it a safer and easier environment for everyone to talk. I appreciate everyone's honesty(especially Steven) and it's made me realise that we should look at weight beyond face value, a lot of us, in real life and on the internet, are unsympathetic to individuals who are overweight or obese and similarly to individuals who are thin (maybe to a lesser extent but still a harmful discourse nonetheless) and we negate the fact that we as a society play active and primary roles in other people's body images so I think we should try and be more mindful and less judgemental and promote a healthy lifestyle rather than one fixed body image, people carry weight differently and there's really nothing wrong with that
@olaoluwaakomolede24212 жыл бұрын
That's a great take but I think it applies to both sides of the spectrum. People are also very quick to speak out on 'Oh you look beautiful!' When someone is extremely unhealthy. It's better to stay quiet that to mess with someone's mental state, by asking them 'oh are you anorexic?' when they might not be, or 'you look great!' when they don't. Not saying compliments shouldn't be given, but they should be focused on growth rather than how they look in the moment.

Steven is such a sweetie. It's really interesting to hear the backgrounds of people who are interested in losing weight and who have lost weight for their health. Everybody here is loving and accepting and it's a nice platform to address how everybody at any weight can struggle with being healthy and loving their bodies. I also like how Steven addressed that being overweight can be dangerous, not beautiful, especially at higher weights. And we as a society say that every body is beautiful but instead we should be supporting everybody to be healthy and to love themselves, no matter what step of the journey they are on. To me the most beautiful people are the ones who love others and love themselves. They support others and themselves to live their happiest, healthiest and best life, because loving life is the best way to live :) I would definitely say all the people in this video are beautiful because they had a lovely time and enjoyed meeting new people.
@smartFunable Жыл бұрын
Yeah overweight/obesity is first of all a disease that leads to other various health issues. We off course shouldn't bully somebody because of the body weight, however also being extra positive about overweight is harmful, since people will not be motivated about loosing weight. So we should emphasize more that being overweight is a big health issue and not a "look issue"

Then as I got older, in my early 20's I weighed 122-26 at 5'7 and I felt enormous. I starved myself and went on crazy "my fitness pal" diets and wasn't happy unless I was underweight on the BMI scale. I still deal with those issues at 24. I'm 119 now and am still trying to lose weight. Watching this video made me realize that it's normal for me to weight 122+ and I the dizziness, hunger, headaches, tiredness aren't worth it. Shoutout to Steven for vocalizing his view of body positivity. Body positivity's intention is to not be toxic, but it often has a counterproductive effect. Telling ppl they're beautiful the way they are when they are unhealthy is not a net positive. You wouldn't tell a meth addict or crack addict that they look great and are healthy, why do that with obese people? We shouldn't necessarily bully anyone for their weight, but we definitely should not enable them.
@kennedy36822 жыл бұрын
why are you specifically singling out "obese people" and not people who are also underweight? there is nothing wrong with the body positivity movement itself and there's no need to bodyshame randos on the internet.

@@TGCid01 when did I say you bodyshamed anyone? I said bodyshaming isn't the answer when you see someone "unhealthy" and the body positivity movement isn't enabling unhealthiness. also once again, why isn't this same energy given to people who are underweight? why is it silent then when that's enabled..? 🧐
@TGCid012 жыл бұрын
@@kennedy3682 why was body shaming even brought into the conversation? That's why I questioned it. - There's body positivity (enabling/positive reinforcement) - Neutrality - body shaming (negative reinforcement) I never promoted body shaming, so why are you even bringing that here as if I did? Once again, I clearly stated we should not be bullying ppl aka "body shaming". So what's the purpose of introducing "we shouldn't be body shaming" as a point of contention with my statement when I never promoted it? That's a non-sequitur argument. Anyway, back to the larger point. You say body positivity isn't wrong. Enabling someone who is an unhealthy weight with negative implications on their health, has eating disorders, or overindulges is indeed wrong. See my drug addict analogy. Ppl in that category need help in improving the conditions of their health, not enablement and telling them everything is okay. It seems like "body positivity" to you encompasses everything excluding body shaming (enablement, neutrality, and the absence of body shaming). So in your head if it's not body shaming, it's body positivity. Well, the definition of body positivity is specific to enablement, so by that definition, body shaming/enabling, promoting and congratulating the unhealthy physical conditions of others is bad. Just because I'm not for body positivity doesn't mean I'm for body shaming, which I explicitly stated in my very first msg. And once again, you must not have read my comments, because I addressed underweight ppl with eating disorders in my previous msg. If you're going to converse with me, at least read and understand what I'm saying. That's just basic fundamental respect.

In my view, it's very important to love and be empathetic towards yourself while you are on your journey to achievean objective, but you shouldn't accept yourself regardless, because some situations really require a change (for example obesity or anorexia) and you can't just accept yourself, because your health could be seriously damaged I hope it's clear what I mean!

I literally just got so emotional at the end. I used to be a bigger girl, I'm not nessisarily skinny now but I was alot bigger. On the verge of morbid obesity. Since loosing weight it has been hard to shake the negative feelings that came with being bigger and I related to these people so much. Weight loss (or even weight GAIN) is more than physical journey but an emotional one. Wishing anyone on that journey all the love the world has to offer ❤

what steven said about food addiction being harder to overcome than alcohol addiction, i've heard is true. I only have the former of the two, but the difference is its easier to give up alcohol completely and never have it again. You can't do that with food. You need food to live, so relapses will be way more frequent and its much easier for the addiction to be triggered by simply eating a meal.

As someone with a history of an eating disorder and is trying to lose weight, I felt a lot of these stories on a deep level. I am medically obese now which is a mental struggle and I work out when I can- being in college and a teaching major- but I spend everyday trying to think: “I want to change, but not because I hate how I am now. I want to change because I love who I am now and want to do what is best for me.” It is a hard mindset, but I’m making progress.

No, black females are ranked number one in being overweight and obese. This is from laziness that have instilled in blacks from the individual who raised you and 9/10 it's the mother. You know, just like with Sabrina situation and many others in the black "community". This will not change until black females in large numbers start calling out these faults.

As a young women who has been "skinny" (though not extremely) all her life, I have gotten compliments on my weight, body shape etc. starting from primary school. This fucked up with my self image and made me scared of gaining weight. While i consciously understood how much i valued myself should not be even partly determined by my appearance, it drove me to have a bad relationship with food. i was eating very unhealthy or emotionally binging. Since i wasn't showing much when i went on the scale, i regarded it as "fine" but it was quite damaging to my body and mind. Over the last 4 years, i've gained about 8 pounds, and it felt to my disrupted sence of perception like 40. i am still struggling, but putting the emphasis on health rather than beauty standards is starting to help with that. Discussions like this one, in a safe environment where people from many different eating/weight backgrounds share their stories are extremely important

What should make you scared of gaining weight is health complications everybody should try their best to keep their body as fit as they can so they can live a longer life even if you are eating unhealthy you should atleast go for runs so you burn those calories
