I served in the Army for 10 years. And I feel like the biggest threat to a service members mental and emotional stability has to do with identity. At the beginning of your training, the objective of the Army was to teach you how to be a Soldier. In the process, you change a little and your mind has been altered to understand that you are one with the other Soldiers you fight with and that you should follow orders unless they are immoral. As Soldiers continue to serve, they lose some of their individuality and become a part of the collective. The problem is that many Soldiers don’t have an identity outside of the uniform. They no longer know who they are because who they are is A Soldier. We all know that it’s true because we can see a soldier in public places wearing civilian clothes and instantly recognize them as a Soldier. There is a look, a way in which we interact with others and move through society. For me, this was all a positive thing. But I was also VERY CONSCIOUS and aware that I had to fight for my individuality. Being a Soldier is what I do; NOT the only thing that defines who I am.

very true, a lot of people get lost in the army and forget that even though it can be a part of them it is not the only thing that defines who you are as a person or individual, to me personally, joining the army was and still is one of the greatest things I've done in my life, because it allowed me to grow as person and to meet people I could really count with and take on throughout my entire life from that day on, but I don't take in the fact that I'm only that, I am more than that. 3 years plus in the making ...

that's really interesting. I don't have first hand experience but I'm a spouse and can already see how jarring reintegrating into civilian life will be for my partner when we move back to the US. I'm sure that the veteran suicide rate is heavily impacted by going from that group identity with a set of rules for interacting, to "losing purpose" suddenly when you're no longer wearing that uniform or under the unique stressors of that job. I'm glad it turned out okay for you :)

Sammi J. Yes, you hit the nail on the head. Once people leave the Army, some feel they have also lost their identity. Therefore integrating back into a society where they feel like they are incomplete is difficult and for some, it’s impossible. They feel worthless without the Army, so they decide to end it all. During my entire time as a Soldier, I maintain my individuality and my sense of self. And I must say, that this maintenance of my self was celebrated in the Army and attributed to my success. I wish the best for you and your spouse.

@MR. Right Yes, by a large margin. There are so many weapons that were used to inflict massive losses in WW1 and after that dwarf the loss of life of ancient wars. Not to mention war now especially in Iraq or Afghanistan is simply based on luck, as IEDs take more lives than actual gunshots.

@MR. Right absolutely, while having a sword go through your body is a gruesome way to die, bombs, gases, radiation, and tactics of war have become so complex and dangerous that it affects the path of humanity. All the way from a single gunshot to a ICBM with a nuclear warhead flattening a city, the advancements in technology and human population itself, has killed far more than any war in ancient history could ever amount to.

I was not old enough, or even alive, for 9/11. My non american friends joke that the country will collapse soon. They joke of civil war. I have heavily considered joining the military when I am older. Do you have any advice? Not even for the military part, but for the sky is falling feeling. I am not too patriotic, but I don't hate it here. I just have a feeling of violence and conflict arising soon, and it won't go away. And as they said in the video, war is inevitable. I fear that is true too. Regardless of what you believe in, do you have any advice or wisdom or something along those lines? Thank you.

@@ja-naeharris8193 In terms of advise...? When it comes to military service.....I'm currently torn. I am proud of my military service. And I am shamed by what was done in our name, as well as what we did in the name of "freedom" (but, actually it looked like it was in the name of the wealthy). If you make the decision to serve, you must acknowledge that you are surrendering your individuality. It is because of the nature of political power/corruption that i would decline putting on the uniform again. These "sky is falling" moments seem to happen every 5-10 years. Be aware of the fear mongering that comes with it. Our politicians love to use tragedies to further manipulate the public, and line their own pockets. Propaganda is used against enemies. It is legal for the United States to propagandize its citizens. It is legal for the government to treat us as enemies. So, on that note....don't trust the news. Don't trust politic power/politicians. Always question what you're being told. Be a critical thinker. An' it harm none, do what thy will.

This video touched my heart so profoundly. It really humanized the military for me. I really felt like people in the military are hard emotionless robots, but every single one of these people are just human beings, genuinely decent, kind, down to earth human beings, not the robots I always imagined. I highly respect every single one of these people, and my heart hurts for what they must've had to endure.

@Erwin Lii Like they said in the video the question would be better phrased using the word inevitable as I'm sure a vast majority of people would agree that war just not existing would be amazing. The issue is the people who don't whether it be them trying to gain money, power, etc. someone will always be trying to take as it is human nature and the only way I see that stopping is some form of brainwashing.

I wish so many other people would also start to realize that we're our own people apart from our military service. glad you came to this realization.

@Erwin Lii im a veteran and I have a hard time with the word evil. I don't necessarily believe in the concept of evil, so I cant see anywhere where an evil is necessary. I do believe in tribalism, limited resources, and survival. if you believe in your tribe, value your resources and want to survive then you have to do what you have to do.

@@johnnyguerra5427 Incorrect. Once a president commits an act of tyranny, he is no longer acting president and is viewed as a tyrant. At that moment in time, the constitution and congress (or highest ranking military official at the time) becomes the CIC.
