I personally don't tend to make remarks on actors but Judi Dench is frighteningly compelling, relentless and so believable, a perfect performance.

A mature, middle upper class, bored housewife living in a semi detached terraced home in North London decides to bed her 15 year old pupil from the gutter in a school she just started working at, and justify her actions through her poor relationship with her dad, the age gap between her and her husband and the amount of time she spent taking care of her son who's born with Down's Syndrome. What's so wonderful about that? And all resolves thanks to the cat lady she befriends and almost beds played by OBE Dame Judi Dench.

Judi Dench is one of the top actresses in the world. Brilliant, natural, convincing. The psychological components in the film were superb. I have seen it at least 5 times and always discover some other dimension of the characters. I dare say, my favorite actress is Bette Davis and Judi Dench is in her category.

A wonderful compilation of quotes - just need to add the one where Barbara is invited to Sunday lunch: "Bliss, a merry flag on the Arctic wilderness of my calendar. The thing about this movie vs real life is that you want to hate Barbara for being a vindictive lonely old crone who yearns for relationships with younger prettier girls, but you just can’t hate her when she’s so eloquent in her writing and speech, she seems like wonderful company in fact and you’d think in real life with that sharp wit she’d have been able to get a partner rather than languishing alone. It’s often difficult to have to dramatise something and make it worth watching while also maintaining the reality that a lady like Barbara would probably be quite an insipid character.

This movie was expertly executed. Judi Dench plays the seemingly benevolent schoolmarm like a stradivarius and Cate Blanchett equally precise as the artsy bored housewife of privilege fiddling around with a teenage student oblivious to the schoolmarms crush on her. If they marketed this with a bouquet of rainbow flags, more people would have seen it. It was promoted as subtly as it was acted. I love this movie.❤
