I wouldn't say BJJ has created guards and submissions as much as they have rediscovered them (but props to them for that). Judo encompasses a lot more than is commonly seen in modern competitions. Keep in mind that the rules prohibiting pulling guard and such in judo came into place because in the early years there were judo ground fighting experts who would go directly to the ground instead of attempting throws. The techniques are there, just not practiced as much. I like both though :)

I do judo. 10/10 would do. I’ve never been forced to use it in a self defense situation, and I never advise turning your back on your foe even if you have a perfect grip and form, because he could wrestling sprawl out and pancake on you, so, you can do it, just try not to get into any fights. And only do it if you’re fighting one attacker.

It's funny that there are Judoka out there trawling the net and their DVD collections looking for fight scenes that they can point at and say "That's ours",. Bruce Lee once said "Before I studied the art, a punch to me was just like a punch, a kick just like a kick. After I learned the art, a punch was no longer a punch, a kick no longer a kick. Now that I've understood the art, a punch is just like a punch, a kick just like a kick". He was right - and the same is true of grappling. Methods of throwing are simply expressions of the dynamic relationship between two bodies in combat and appear in the martial arts of every warrior culture from European knights to the villagers of the Philippine jungle. Sorry Judoka, you don't own these techniques, you own a fighting philosophy, a training methodology and a specific piece of cultural heritage but you don't own the techniques.
@orderofscribes7 жыл бұрын
baldieman64 wow, you've just put into words my exact "philosophy" on fighting
@mr.q3377 жыл бұрын
TRUE, at certain level you will realize every martial art are very similar to each other. Human body is limited, there is only a few way to punch, or kick and every art try to claim that their.
@rainjb6 жыл бұрын
Look, I see where you're coming from, all punches and kicks just either go left, right, up or down. But the thing is with Throws, chokes, e.t.c is that they have more steps to them and are more complex and aren't moves you can think of within a single normal street fight. If this was true it would apply to all sports such as how you do a throw in baseball or in basketball. Look, I agree with Bruce Lee too, but what he meant was to stay with kicks and punches. Ok, lets see if you can describe a basic Karate punch in one small sentence, about 5-8 words. Note it must be clear and be easy to follow. Lets say "a strict movement of an enclosed hand". How about a basic Judo throw? Lets take Ippon Seoinage for example. You have to explain the grip, how you get into position to throw and how you throw all in one sentence.

A combat sport can be a martial art and vice-versa. It all depends on the objective. The founder of Judo (Jigoro Kano) wanted to create a way of self-development out of ancient Jiu-Jitsu techniques ("jiu", or "ju", means "gentleness", and "jitsu"/"Jutsu", means technique, while "do" means "way"). He also wanted judo to become a sport too, because the idea of self-development isn't incompartible with sports. Think of Judo as Shooting: it can be self-defense, a sport, a way of life (i.e. hunter).
@PhysiKarlz12 жыл бұрын
You do realise that BJJ came from judo. It was a Mitsuyo Maeda who introduced judo to Brazil which then the Gracies changed into BJJ. Most of these submission are recognised as judo and all have names in judo (but some are harder to find because they aren't allowed in competition only).

Yes it's true that judo comes from classic Ju-Jitsu but as far as throws are concerned Kano was the first to introduce the concept of off-balancing and master the throwing techniques. So really he improved the existing throws and even invented new ones, just as modern judokas are doing today (and wrestlers and any other athletes that can score with takedowns)
@scottyke210 жыл бұрын
That's right, Kano found a way to perform the throws without using all your strength, by using the concept of off-balancing and in letting your opponent come at you. That's why he called it Ju-Do "Gentle-Way"

Half-truths! In Chinese speaking countries, BJJ is translated as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but all knowledgeable BJJ teachers will tell you that Helio Gracie learned the art through his brothers, notably Carlos, who learned directly from Mitsuyo Maeda. Maeda was a student of Tsunejiro Tomita, who was the first student of Jigoro Kano, the founder of Kodokan Judo, or simply judo. If anyone thinks Maeda was a classical jiujitsu practitioner, a homework question for you: why did Maeda take up judo?

donnie yen in the first clip was doing the gracie/brazillian jiu jitsu guard, remember judo was invented by a jiu jitsu practitioner, these locks and things are unique to jiu jitsu (japanese&brazillian) the throws were added in judo, that's why in judo you can win just by a throw, in jiu jitsu we also start standing, but the throw is merely the start of the fight, watch roger gracie, jacare, damian maia and the diaz bros these guys all do these throws, but they do bjj

The naming of the techniques is really cool. While I think this is a nice effort in some respects, there's not much Judo in lots of these movies, when you consider actual Judo in a lot of other older films. Jujitsu, for sure. The JuJitsu in the first clip from "Flash Point'' is cool (Yen worked out with MMA guys to gather skill for this film). Some really well executed moves in other clips. To call the silly stuff in the last clip, from Jackie Chan's "Gorgeous" is pretty wide reach. Also, FWIW, most of these aren't Hollywood movies. And if that's the case I wonder why films like Hong Kong's (Johnny To's) "Throw Down", or "Red Belt', "Blood on the Sun", or "Tokyo Joe", which specifically deal with Judo aren't on this clip.

the funny thing is that, in a way, you are right, but you have to have in mind that judo is a kind of jiu-jitsu, what Jigoro Kano, creator of judo, do was take some technics of the original martial art and changed in a way that would not hurt too much the opponent so it could become and sport, it was a revolutionary thought that take martial arts to a new level of internationalization. But some traditional schools of judo still teach those techniques, but only in the name of knowledge.

Nice video. There's a lot more Judo out there in movies. For instance in the Chinese Connection Bruce Lee fights a Russian Judoka near the end. Also Bruce Lee kills Kareem Abdul Jabbar in Game of Death using a San Kaku Jime. Mel Gibson also wins his fight at the end of Lethal Weapon 1 with San Kaku. All The Lethal Weapon movies feature a lot of Judo including a love scene that starts out with Rene Russo throwing Mel Gibson with Osoto Gari. Just one nitpick comment. The choke Donnie Yen uses on Colin Chou is Sode Jime "sleeve choke". The last throw is Ushiro Goshi to Ken Ken Kata Guruma of course.

You also got to love how the sound guys in martial arts movies think chokes break people's necks :P...Also, I know this vid has a judo guy naming these movies...But the Ura-Nages are not ura-Nages, they are suplexs, ura-nages are different, the simply way I can put it is the ura-nages are belly to back suplexes. The thing is I bet these movies are not about judo and just have plethora's of grappling techniques for our enjoyment, and I got to say, it entertained me :D. The last couple of movies are more inspired by mma rather then judo also. But you can say they are judo moves because like most grappling arts, they all share the same techniques just different focuses.

@santiagoalbajudo28858 жыл бұрын
Did you practice judo anytime? No, right?
@madmike17088 жыл бұрын
***** Yes actually :P. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Judo and Amateur wrestling, I wanted to do Judo or Wrestling to compliment my takedowns, I did decide to focus more on the wrestling due to the techniques working well both in GI and No Gi. However I still go down every now and then on a sunday to brush up on gi only takedowns, also seeing as some of my BJJ buddies go down there. The Ura Nage in question is actually a High Crotch German Suplex, it definitely does not look like any Ura Nage's I have ever seen, from the angle, the nature of the lift and the hand positions. It is not out of the ordinary to think Donne Yen did a wrestling takedown as he has FOR SURE done german suplex's in the past in his films due to his inclusion of MMA in his films. Everything else in this video? Spot on, I do know Judo has a lot of takedowns that are in other combat systems, just under their own name. But all Ura Nages I have ever seen does not look like this one.
@madmike17088 жыл бұрын
You could argue "well its a No Gi Ura Nage and he has to grab the way he does in order to get a grip for the lift", which is true...If they did not already demonstrate he has a jacket and has used it to do Judo takedowns, which is why I think it is a deliberate wrestling suplex. Seeing as the roll under punch into german suplex has been used in a few movies now.

Hey guys, most of these films are unknown, I've just seen Oblivion, and in the fighting scene when the main character played by tom cruise is fighting his clone you can see a seoi nage followed in some seconds by a sangaku(triangle choke),

Yes, they did know those throws. I'm trying to be patient, but the founder of Gracie bjj studied Judo, developed BJJ, and got beaten by a judoka (but he beat some as well). Judo incorporates techniques from BJJ, and high level people from either are generally supportive of cross training. If you close yourself off to other martial arts and are arrogant, you're going to stunt your own growth.
