For context, this kid has only started BJJ in 2020 it seems. The IBJJF threw a shitfit when Travis Stevens got his BJJ black belt in 18 months, plus I can guarantee you there would be some belt divas at his BJJ academy who would lose their shit if a kid like this got his purple/brown belt after 1 or 2 years, even if he was an Olympian. Some people still think you get a BJJ belt partly based on how much money you give a gym over time, not just how skilled you are.

Yeah, it's weird. Also he's like 38 lmao but yeah. Strong high school wrestler and Olympic judoka as the video and several comments here state. I feel like with that much background the year and a half blue belt wait shouldn't really apply to him and others in his position if he can qualify for a Blue off the bat and probably even test for a Purple within at least 3-6 months, because realistically a life-long judoka and wrestler (he's done both forever), let alone one who competed on an Olympic level, is probably better qualified and more of a general threat than most BJJ grapplers at their own game. Like, peak Travis Stevens, for example, against, say, Gordon Ryan...I'd put my money on the Olympian who's dedicated his life to the grind and really knows how to end matches quick.

@@napalminthemorning8309 I agree on everything but for the last part on Gordon, he's basically an Olympian at BJJ. Travis would destroy him standing, but I am 99% sure Gordon would win anyway.

@@GMunoz-oj5zb Because stand up is dying in BJJ. If things don't change there will be no stand up at all in the next decade in BJJ. Between 2015 and 2017 in the mundials adult BB divisions, only 17% of the matches had takedowns or takedown attempts. Even John Danaher has said this trend is worrying. Takedowns are a dying art in bjj, and once they go bjj moves even more in to its own little world, getting further removed from being a functional fighting system or an S tier system for MMA.

I absolutely agree I am a brown belt in judo and I can typically throw most of the people in my class on a good day in Randori but across town in the bjj gym i have a hard time getting a clean throw. I’m just working on how to sumi gaeshi a single leg at this point.

@@Luccimatic you can throw judo players but not bjj guys? Why do you think that is?
@Luccimatic
@Luccimatic Жыл бұрын
@@jackjack4412 there are several reasons. Bjj people tend to become what i lovingly refer to as “the brick”. they are super defensive and usually have a lot of basic defense skills worked out pretty quickly in white belt. they pull moves you forgot about or just weren’t taught because of judo’s strict rule set as of late. Judo discourages being super defensive and even penalizes you if you are not trying to throw and just stiff arm your opponent, so we tend to play around with footwork more and try to counter each others throw attempts. Defense of any hard resistance comes in short bursts in judo between throws. Stalling on your feet at all is frowned upon. So I guess Pair that with someone that has wrestling background or a good sense of leg grabs and I’ll typically find myself posturing up too high and leaving my legs open for all those wonderful takedowns judo doesn’t do anymore. That or they just pull guard…

After another 50 classes you can get promoted to yellow, but it doesnt mean you will get that belt. After that you have to compete to get your belts faster but sometimes you have to wait 6 months between each promotion, so in general - you see people getting black belt after practicing judo for around 8-10 years. I would change title to "retired judo Olympian",, you won't see a current Judo Olympian doing BJJ, ever. Only a retired one, that goes for MMA or any other combat sport, they're not allowed under IJF rulings. And to be honest your not going to stand much chance against even a retired Olympic Judoka cos of the speed as they're used to quick transition, all that Judoka has to do is do a little swotting up to BJJ rules and regs and it's game over even against black belts. He's an ex Olympian, and he's not even big leagues in an Olympic sense, I think current olympic Judokas from different countries (as there is a huge difference in application) should let BJJ have a go even using BJJ rules, you would be more than shocked, the Japanese with their perfect grace, you don't see it coming, or the Georgians with their animalistic grappling then there is the Koreans with their unorthadoxed entries or the French with their power. I do both but I have to be honest, there isn't a BJJ in the world that would be a match for a current Olympian, trust me, they're frightening and they're better than anyone in that situation, a bit like being a top boxer in your club and the next fight is Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali in their prime or the gypsy king now, just being honest, they're scary technicians, I started BJJ for a rest but love it, and I'm getting far less injuries, I did judo for over 25yrs and fought a Judoka from UK that had been retired for 30 yrs, I thought I was good but this guy ate me for breakfast, 10k lighter, a lot older, less muscle but didn't matter, he was on another level even though he'd never won a gold, it's the speed and expertise of these guys, it's awe inspiring tbh, every BJJ player would have a better arsenal if they had judo first, do it the other way round and you will find it very difficult to do judo cos of the in built fighting mentality already picked up, it's a lot easier to go from judo to BJJ, (and let's be honest, it's the old traditional judo newaza, no matter what the Gracie's say, they picked up and refined BJJ from an old Judoka visiting who taught them. Anyway I digress, good video.

BJJ should be called Brazilian sport ground fighting. Emphasis on the "sport". I was in a melee with 7 people, one guy took another guy to the ground, was on top and promptly got soccer kicked in the face by someone still standing straight unconcious. He lay there while everyone else kept fighting for another few minutes. Be as salty as you want, but if you go to the ground, and there's no mat or referee, you are in trouble.

@@laithalmasri6985 Yes, but American judo sucks. If he was Japanese he'd be just another guy who does judo (again, no disrespect intended). In any case, this is a BJJ tournament, not a judo tournament. He's a blue belt. If you think it would be fair for him to be in a black belt tournament then you're effectively saying he's a black belt. You are not his coach. You don't get to make that decision.
