Traditional sambo shoes are very soft. You can think of a sturdy fabric rather than a wrestling shoe. It's kind of hard to explain. To me, they feel almost like a stiff sock

Sambo shoes are actually more like thick socks, wrestling shoes are way tougher and have rubber soles, sambo shoes have soft soles usually made of leather

Several things to say. First, wrestling shoes will tear up tatami mats, sambo shoes will not. Second, take a look at the feet of any old school judoka, John Saylor comes to mind. Or, it the very old book “The law and the martial arts,” they have a picture. The damage to the feet is horrific. Sambo shoes prevent that. Finally, to the age old debate about gi vs bathing suit, the sambo part of this is usually missed. For the most part everyone wears a belt. This is often ignored in Judo due to modern rules. My favorite line from John Saylor every fall; “Choking season is back!”

Hi Chadi 06:06 okuri ashi harai... What is your opinion on this sweep/throw? Fx I very like to do (try) it in randori but in my opinion it is not that easy in judo (my height and weight probably do not helping against guys 15-30+ kg heavier than me in my club : p).. but! It seems like in sambo this technique is used much more often than in judo (just my observations) do you think that this grip on the shoulder helps with it or it is just a different dynamic/strategy for it?

This connect to the jacket-naked body debate in grappling. In temperate zones, people generally wear some sort of jacket (and pants), but also definitely wear shoes! It's kind of odd that judo/sambo are jacket wrestling styles, while wrestling isn't, but wear shoes. Sambo makes more sense if we are talking about what reflects real life.

For me, the shoes were never an issue when transitioning from Judo to Sambo. They are basically leather socks with laces, but you do not loose any flexibility. The biggest problem is the stance. Sambo fighters are very bend in their stance, making the feet hard to reach

My students and I wear shoes doing Irish collar and elbow and it definitely changes the way the trips and sweeps happen. Not to mention being harder to off balance

Sambo shoes aren’t the same as wrestling. They don’t have the grip on the bottom that wrestling shoes have. The bottom is soft like if ur wearing socks on the mat

Biggest difference between savate and kickboxing is the shoes
