I think Judy mastered this scene because she had the experience as a star and crashing star to see a bit of herself in BOTH Ester and Norman. To the people who think she's overacting, I don't think so. Judy is almost crying for real. There were times she has hated herself for failing in her career and love life.

I'm not convinced that she was acting. When you consider that she sabotaged her own career at MGM, attempting suicide after being notified that her contract with MGM was canceled, she may have been talking about Norman Maine but actually thinking about herself. "This movie *must* succeed . . . all I have left is my pride."

@frieddoughho939 жыл бұрын
+Gerry Higgins - At the time the movie was made, the owners of the theaters thought it was too long and many took it upon themselves to cut it down. So many edited versions were out there and those of the voting Academy did not see the fully-realized film. Sadly, the Oscar went to Grace Kelly for "A Country Girl" because of this and it is heartbreaking, truly, that Judy was robbed of the award for a clearly better performance.

For this reason, this scene is not really method acting. Judy knew that she was in trouble, and that her dear friends were trying to help her, and she did not want to fall apart but she still did. She drew from those emotions to give this scene, and it was strong enough for her to earn the Best Actress Oscar. The fact that it went to someone else was yet another tragedy in her life.

The difference between this and Wizard is that while Judy undoubtedly made Oz unique she was moreover part of a collaborative effort which made the film a special experience. She doesn't necessarily "steal scenes" from the other players so much as she does contribute to the film's strengths. While the film would have suffered without her, the film may still have gone on to immortality had they cast, say Deanna Durbin or Charlotte Henry as Dorothy, because the other factors would have remained the same (special effects, costumes, score, script, etc.). It just would have been less "special." But, with Star is Born there can be no doubt. This was Judy's film - no Judy, no Star is Born. No one in this film stood a chance against her - she walks off with every scene and takes no prisoners, here holding her own against seasoned veteran Charles Bickford without losing a step, giving a serious dramatic performance before finishing off the showstopper she had been working on the scene earlier. Just fantastic...

+John Lingard Absolutely! 100% right! She was robbed of that Oscar! I saw Country Girl and Grace was good but she never was and never will be Judy.
@jonathankieranwriter6 жыл бұрын
John Lingard ... Jesus Christ. Deanna Durbin as Dorothy? 🙄 Deanna Durbin pseudo-operatically trilling, “The house began to pitch, the kitchen took a stitch, and suddenly the hinges started to unhitch, JUST THEN, the witch, it satisfy an itch, came riding on her broomstick, thumbing for a hitch.”? Good grief. A huge part of the immortality of Oz was related to its tremendous score, and Durbin was certainly not suited to that kind of score. Nor did she have Garland’s palpable innocence and combo of verve/vulnerability as an actress. Anyhow, Durbin wasn’t in the movie. Durbin never had a Wizard of Oz. Nor, for that matter, did she ever have a Meet Me in St. Louis, an Easter Parade, an A Star is Born, a For Me and My Gal, or a Girl Crazy. She did have a Christmas Holiday, which in 1944 became the FIRST picture of her career that managed to gross $2M at the box office, whereas a slew of Garland’s films had by that time already grossed over $4M each, including St. Louis, which in 1944 grossed over $7M. Durbin was very good at what she did; cutesy Jeanette McDonaldesque B-musicals over at Universal, and she had her audience, but that audience did not even approach the size of Garland’s audience, despite the hype Universal heaped upon Durbin (who never even once made the annual exhibitors’ Top 10 box office poll during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She only even appeared in the Top 25 five times in her entire career. Garland, on the other hand, appeared in the Top 10 three times-twice as one of only 2 women to manage it, along with Bette Davis-and she featured in the Top 25 ten times.) I shudder to imagine Durbin skipping to Oz. 😆

Virtuoso singing, dancing, and acting. I DETEST Jack Warner BUTCHERING this film and Judy, Sid Luft, & George Cukor were powerless. She was robbed the Oscar but she OWNS the hearts of the world.

One biographer wrote that Cukor “seemed almost to revel in taking [Judy] Garland to the brink for scenes where she had to bare her emotions…. [He would remind her] of her own joyless childhood … and career low points, her marital failures … and chronic insecurity.” The makeup artist from A Star Is Born said, “He knew how to hurt a woman, and he used it several times to get them into a mood for a crying scene.” Excerpt From “In the Dream House” Carmen Maria Machado

@Vengeance509 Well, I think the point was to have her in "happy clown" makeup (play-acting) in order to further the contrast against her actual mood. It highlighted the sacrifice she was making for her public image versus her personal life. The end of the scene further illustrates this as she abruptly changes expressions and moods when she knows the camera is rolling. A bit obvious, perhaps, but that was the intent.
@mca12186 жыл бұрын
And that end scene where she "turns that frown upside down" and suddenly smiles again was one of the cut, "lost" scenes found and restored to the film for the 1983 re-release/re-master. Makes the whole sequence twice as effective, as well as incredibly ironic.

Judy was ROBBED of the Oscar. Groucho Marx called it, "The Biggest Robbery since Brinks." Grace Kelly did a good job, but Judy did it all. I still bawl at Judy singing "the Man that Got Away," and her final scene calling herself Mrs. Norman Maine. Now I've seen Lady Gaga's Star is Born. As you watch the film she becomes a better and better actress growing before your eyes. The singing is obvious but the last 30 minutes of the film she earns that Oscar. Gaga once again shocked me. IT could be Glenn Close for "The WIfe" (overdue win,) or Gaga could win the Best Actress Oscar that Judy should have won. Should Gaga win for acting wonder if she'll mention Judy.
