Judy Garland - "The Man That Got Away" (Alternative Take 1)

The famous Judy Garland scene of "The Man That Got Away" from "A Star Is Born" is surely a true classic and a fabulous performance. Actually this scene took several months to be filmed, and there are several takes from this scene that were left out of the final version. Here's one of them.

Whenever I hear Miss Garland sing, my first, and only, reaction is always, WOW! It's always a pleasure, and a treat, to hear Miss Garland sing...Especially when she sings this particular song. Technically, too, it always amazes me how each of the alternate takes of this song varies not much, at all, from the other or from the final print version of the song. The subtlety of the difference in each, to me, is a fine testament to the true genius and artistry of Miss Garland.

Some said that the wardrobe used by Judy in the other takes was "innapropriate" for the character. And was also said that those previous takes were not 'directed' the right way. If I'm not mistaken, they even changed directors to shoot that scene, after Judy Garland took a break.

It's very interesting to see the 3 different versions shot - I prefer the one used- Judy looks much better dressed by Jean Louis in the navy dress with white collar and she had lost a bit more weight by that take. Would love to hear the alternative version of this song- it was recorded more subtly but Judy insisted on the stronger vocals which were ultimately used in the film - her vocal coach disagreed.

I wonder if she's singing live, since it's all in one shot (and I know that's not the way you shoot musicals) but somehow, though she was a perfect lypshincher, it feels live. anybody knows about this audio take? this is so beautiful, much more relaxed than in the final cut take, with the proper mood, less contrived, but yet....not so "grand"

Those of us who fall in love and have soft hearts seem to get hurt the most. I was thinking through love not logic which messed me up but I'm a good person with moral values of do unto others as you wish done to you and I love women and men for friends and falling in love to me is about the person not gender or looks or money. I had the money and lost it all but will make it again yet might end on streets for a while in a gutter. Watch your heats good people who care and love.

I wonder whether they were going for making the character Esther Blodgett evoke other iconic singers of the era. This one evokes Patsy Cline. Another one evokes Edith Piaf. The one they finally chose evokes Billie Holiday. Just my opinion.

Three days before Christmas, I was dumped and likely because I have Multiple Sclerosis and after a long time, I put so much into the relationship for years and now, I am like this song so I too can relate. Yes, I'm bi but Judy would like that because she knew people were born that way before science proved it two years ago. I never cheated and believe in committed relationships when you date or fall in love and give your all to fix not toss out in bumpy times. God help me get through this.

The color scheme in the final version directed by George Cukor suited the film better. The lighting made her look much younger than her 32 years of hard living. Cukor wasn't availble at the beginning, but eventually, he took over the film and created a Hollywood Masterpiece butchered by the studio so they could play it more times during the day. All of the footage has never been recovered.

I can see why they didn't use this version. Everyone should be aware that she was lip sinking her pre-recorded part. Although incredible, some of her mouth movements didn't match her singing exactly and if anyone noticed, the musicians weren't playing the instruments. Their hand movements didn't match either. I liked the official version better.

It's too bad this wasn't the take they used. It shows her interacting with the musicians and it's more the way she'd act in real life during rehearsals. The blue dress take was nice, but too stiff.

I like Judy’s performance here better because of the genius interaction with the band. But i think its too bright and the lighting misses the debt of the song. The last “blue” take captured the song the best.

the bar should have had darker shadows and less light and fewer musicians

This version lacks the emotional punch of the one finally used. And the lighting, the set aren't as interesting.
