Meeting Smokey Nagata & Mr GTR at Daikoku PA | Japan in a Van Ep. 9

A chance encounter with Smokey Nagata and Hiroshi Tamura, otherwise known as MR GTR at Daikoku PA. We also stop at a few legendary AE86 shops and drop the gold bonnet off at JDM Distro.
In 2019 we went back to Japan. Hungry for more after "Japan Without a Plan", we aimed to seek out AE86's, Street drifting, Kanjo culture, tuning shops and much more.
In this twelve-part special, we buy another van and travel up the east coast, documenting as much as we could, getting ourselves into some hilarious situations.

I was in New Mexico on a road trip from California to Missouri and my water pump let go. So there I am, spending hundreds of dollarydoos, buying tools and lots of parts to change a water pump in a "parking lot" on my shitbox..er... "low miles and original" 1983 - 17 year old Mustang V6 Convertible (with Cali plates) and on my last trip in to buy coolant, a radiator cap and what not, the cashier of the NAPA goes, "Looks like you fixed the car huh.. We dont like your kind around here, so better get out of town before dark." Of course I laughed... He still didn't change his expression. I laughed again... He just stared and picked his nose, but the expression stayed.. So as soon as I got it wrapped up, I left a big gravel plume behind me and GTFO. He was STILL staring me down as I left. I'm assuming by "my kind" is those where parents are from different family trees! HAHA

I have a small story regarding with a skate shop and me being a wee lad, my parents took me to a little skate shop when I was about 8-10 years old and I was amazed by all the things there, from photos of Tony hawk to signed by professionals skateboards, we spent hours in there just for me to talk to the store owner and his son and I would not stop asking questions and I pointed out one particular board that caught my eye hanging on a wall and asked if I could take a look at it up close, not only did they take it down just so I can look at it better, the owner said they had another in the back that was also signed and had a little bit of the graphic taken off because of storage, he went out of his way and showed me both boards and as I was in awe, he knew he hooked a kid into the sport of skating and said I can have it for free because he never had a encounter with someone like myself at a young age that wanted to learn more history about this sport. I still have it to this day and it’s taught me you can motivate a young kid and give him the passion to “keep on pushing” the store sadly closed in 2012 but the board will always stay with me and the story will never die

Daikoku is always insane, I visited on a random Friday night and it was better than any car show or meet I'd ever been to in the UK, absolutely unreal. The people with cars we dream about just meeting up and grabbing a coffee as its just a regular day for them. Blows my mind. Smokey. You guys are the jammiest bunch I've ever seen!

That coupe Quattro is as rare as many of the cars you’ll see. For it to be in Tokyo.. even rarer. Audi enthusiasts would pay an absolute arm and a leg here in Ireland for that car. This episode I think is the best one. A humble episode with unreal GTR’s.
