Regarding the loud pipes save lives business, it was studied about 30 years ago. They do not save lives. In an ideal setting with minimal background noise, no distractions, and a lack of structures to deflect and distort the sound, then yes, noise makes a difference. In the real world it doesn't work that way, not unless your exhaust points forward. Other motorcyclists tend to notice more but most of us are already riding/driving aware of bikes. People who ride regularly with a group can tell which one of their pals pulled up in front of their house without looking outside.

Noise is stupid and pointless. For the most part other motorists don't know where the sound is coming from and a distracted motorist won't be caring how much sound your bike makes. Ride like you don't expect to be seen and you'll be way safer than counting on annoying pipes to save you. This bike is solid and basic. I like it. As a guy who drives both an old school Jeep and my wife's newer vehicle I think the 'loud pipes saves lives' is BS. In my canvas topped Jeep I really don't hear them till they are right next to me (assuming my radio is turned up) where I can easily see them. In my wife's modern vehicle noise suppression is so good I don't really hear the loud pipes till the bike passes, till then it just sounds like typical roadway background noise like diesel trucks and the ricers with their fart cans. 35:35 "Not going easy on this bike at all today..." with an average speed of 19mph. Eh. That's going pretty damn easy on the bike. Where I live in the Southeastern United States there are hills that continue upward for 1-2 miles where the speed limit is 45mph and you have to use full throttle + boost to maintain the speed limit. Boost only works for 15 seconds, then has a 30 second cooldown. So you can't even maintain the 45mph speed limit outside of those 15 seconds of boost. A hill near my house has a 45mph speed limit and my daily drive goes like this: enter the hill at 50 mph, use boost to maintain 50mph for 15 seconds, boost ends and the I AM's speed drops to 42mph full throttle, boost mode available again so I use it and increase to 45 mph, boost mode ends and I'm down to 37mph full throttle at the top of the hill. By this point, 4-8 cars are behind me and people are honking and trying to pass. This bike's power above 40mph is very very limited and if your commute involves hills of any real steepness, you'll struggle to maintain speed limits above 45mph. My TOTAL range on a full charge is around 30 miles. My work is ~15 miles away, so a 30 mile round trip commute and my battery is around 8% when I get home. One thing you didn't mention is once the battery hits 5% you are LOCKED into snail mode. So you're locked to about 5-8mph. This means you actually only have 95% of the battery to work with, since the speed at 5% isn't usable on public roads. I've had my I AM for around 2 weeks and the average power usage on my commute is 135Wh/m - that's insane considering my Tesla's power usage is 225Wh/m on the same drive and it's a whole car. Hub motors are quiet but you have to throw so much power at them to get torque at higher speeds. I'd like to see this same bike, same battery, with a mid drive or a dual hub motor The regenerative braking of the I AM is essentially negligible. On my daily work drive, the battery has ~1% more power when I arrive if I use regenerative braking vs. when I don't use it. The bike is fun. I like a lot about it. But the range when you're *ACTUALLY* not going easy on the bike is super, super low. If you live in California or somewhere with less steep hills I think this bike is a passable straight-road commuter but if you're dealing with any kind of incline where speed limits are 40+mph, it really really chews the battery and can't maintain the speed limit a lot of the time. The I AM at least offers a glimpse into a really good electric commuter but it needs about 50% more power, about 50% more range, and come in at a similar price point. There is a reason all of these bike reviewers are in California. It is the most populous state that has geographic elements that are favorable to electric vehicles. Florida is a similar state, and Texas. You don't see many reviewers with access to electric vehicles to "review" that are in the Southeastern Appalachin areas or the Northwest Rocky Mountain areas. There are some states where these electric bikes are way more usable than others and for people that live there, I think they are pretty good commuting options. As for my I AM, I am likely keeping it for a weekend fun bike and occasional commuter to my work. I do have power at my work so I can charge it while I am there, which is the beauty of electric vehicles. Just bear in mind that if your commute is anything other than flat and if your speed limits are 45+ mph on your drive, the I AM will struggle to keep up with the flow of cars.

hub motors dont need higher power than any other motor. the problem with micromobility at higher speeds is that we have poor aerodynamics. also, for half the price you can get a unicycle that vastly outperforms this bike
@Unkn0wnC0mmand10 күн бұрын
@berengerchristy6256 I'm not implying california is flat. I'm implying these reviewers review these bikes in the flat parts of california with perfect weather so that their review numbers are as favorable as possible. The california reviews that have elevation are minor hills. You want mountains, you come see my commute. We have hills that go upward for 4 miles with zero flats. My issue is that the reviewer stated "I didnt go easy on the bike" with an average speed of 19mph and no real hills in sight. Where most these california rev9ewers review bikes it is as flat as a pancake.
@Unkn0wnC0mmand10 күн бұрын
@Blox117 they do need higher power than other motors to produce comparable torque. Go ride a 2000w mid drive motor followed by a 2000w hub motor. Its not even close. Hub motors have no gearing so they have to make up for that in power consumption. I haven't seen any unicycles on my roads - again, unicycles work in California and very few other places. I'd never even dream of riding a unicycle where I live. Imagine coming to a stop in traffic on a 40 degree hills slope and having to start again on a unicycle. Spoiler - you wouldn't. "Outperforming" is situational and there isn't a unicycle that would outperform the I AM on the roads where I live. Even on a flat, alienrides fastest unicycle does 45-50 mph with a 180lb rider and unicycles are notoriously bad on hills. Aerodynamics don't make a beans worth of difference under 40mph, and if wattage is the same, hub motors will lose every single sub 40mph race to a mid drive or a rim motor. There's a reason all of your super fast e-dirtbikes are using mid drive motors. Go look at the Stark Varg. Its pulling 80HP (speeds over 110mph uphill) while using the same battery size as the I AM and still getting comparable range. Its marginally lighter but the main thing here is it takes a lot less power for a mid drive to generate 80HP while the I AM uses 135wh/m generating 10hp.... my Tesla, a WHOLE CAR, only uses 225wh/m on the same drive. That's throwing more power at a hub motor to compensate for its *much* lower power output per input wattage.

I will stick with the cotton mouth dual mid drive which goes on a much lighter bike and looks like a bike and much lighter and cheaper. Pushing 6k watts and belt driven top speed of 67mph but under 60 is just fine and safer. Balance, battery placement and weight all play a huge role in staying smooth and stable at high speeds. Always make your tires puncture proof if you plan on high speeds. Also we have to look at two categories, smooth stable road bike or more sporty off road performance. The builds are so very different if you want the best performance for either off or on road!

You should check out the Electric Vehicles Space review on this one. He was out on his newest hyper scooter and saw someone with one if these and creepily followed him but it was ok because that guy was also an enthusiast. So then he gets in touch with the company and apparently they are right there in Cali. One of their guys brought out a tester bike for him and then next thing you know he has bought one and then you get the full review and he's started some mods already. You're definitely a bit late to the party on this one but that's ok. That just means you got a better unit. This thing actively being improved all the time. The people making it speak English and actually spend some time making the bike more rideable. It can absolutely go faster but that is not their goal. Stop thinking like a Sur-ron rider. Notice they aren't brandishing 72v and focusing on amp hours. Some people just focus on those stats as if having the most powerful is the best. A high power controller can actually take away from the rideability of a bike. If it's so powerful you have to turn things down to ride casually you have effectively wasted a bunch of money over upgrading. Unless you are racing there is no reason for that. The motor is what limits your overall top speed. This is a well matched controller and motor tuned in a safe for public consumption manner. You can ride that thing for many years and it will be reliable. You can count on it to get you to work and back. This is not an overenthusiast marketed machine. It's a scooter that goes pretty fast. It's heavy. A 90ah battery will do that. This bike dies all the things the specs say. That is very rare these days. They are actually honest and they are actively updating this thing and they listen to their client base. You pay more this bike for sure but the value you get isn't all about the hardware. Rideability. I didn't see you having a hard time understanding things. You really should have checked out the features before your ride. Regen is a pretty huge thing to not key into until late in the ride. The directions are in English, I know that's weird right? Matt, you should make a second pass at this one. These guys are really putting in some effort to make a good product. Is it my style or your style, maybe not...but I still can appreciate what they are doing. Just saying

For reference, that bike is comparable to a 150 cc motorcycle or scooter, that will get 60 to 85 MPG depending on how you ride it. Prices vary don't they, $2500 to $4500?

This bike has Tech out the yin yang and sex appeal though. People will ride a rusty go cart with similar specs to prove a mute point

You will not like this, but the contrast of you riding a $7,000 electric bike past all the homeless encampments.. Kinda appetizing....

yes, and registration. just motorcycle level. mirrors, and a turn signal. Consider it a motorcycle more than a bike.

It would be nice if they had a cruising motoscooter style one. Bikes like these are only for tall people.
