American television sitcom The Parkers aired for five seasons on UPN from August 30, 1999, to May 10, 2004. It was created by television producers and writers Ralph Farquhar, Sara V. Finney and Vida Spears. The same creators of Moesha, another UPN hit, which featured the character of Kim Parker. Given her popularity for four seasons on Moesha, the actress who played her, Countess Vaughn, left the show in 1999 for its spin off, The Parkers. The series centers on the relationship between a mother and daughter, Nikki and Kim Parker, who reside in Santa Monica, California, while both attending the local Santa Monica College.

One thing I dislike about The Parkers is that they dumbed down Kim’s character. She had sense on Moesha, but on The Parkers she was an airhead.

My favorite Kim was in Season 4. I love how she stood up to Moesha in the fourth season(especially when they had that fight about college/the future that one episode) and was confident in her ways and looks.

They were also black women pursuing a higher education. Let’s not forget both Andell and Nicki were small business owners. Also, we had a black man on that show. Who was the professor. I feel that all the characters on that show showed Black people and a beautiful and positive light. it showed people that you could make mistakes and not come from the background and still make something of yourself no matter what your stage in life . Also Just because someone is animated and boisterous does not make them dumb smh

Just to add Kim may have not been a genius, but she got to pursue her dreams. She matured throughout the show. She was married and divorced, but learned about herself. She tried dating and once those relationships didn’t work, she evolved. She found her own set of friends and wasn’t following behind Moesha and or chasing after Hakim (RIP to the actor). She was moving to New York to follow her career goals and was going to be independent again. She was in her own lane and very content.

I love how Rodney Jerkins capitalized on the new sound shift of R&B in 1998/1999 and made those theme song bangers for The Parkers and Moesha(Season 4). The instrumental was poppin’, the flow was smooth and Kim’s vocals matched the fun of the lyrics. Those were the days of Black people making theme songs that you wish were an actual single on the billboard hot 100 charts. 😅

Thank-you for this. I liked this show, but very much wish Ms. Parker didn't end up with Professor Ogelsvee. He was quite mean spirited to her and malicious... UNLESS it benefited him. Kims character was indeed dumbed in subsequent seasons.
@shabazbaptiste688
@shabazbaptiste688 6 ай бұрын
I agree, she finally had a good man in her life that loved and cared for her. That never treated her less than because of her size (which Ms. Parker was and is a baddie). It irritated me that as soon as dude came into her life Prof. Oglevee had an awakening during a therapy session that he loved her?! Chile… It would have been awesome if Nicki dusted him. But this was the early 2000’s where full figured women were the butt of the joke.

I noticed that a trend in 1990s and 2000s shows was that it was considered funny when women and girls stalked and harassed the guys, like their actions weren't to be taken as seriously as a man's. I never found it funny even when I watched them in cartoons as a child. Watching it in the Parkers when I was in high school really annoyed me, especially since Nikki was supposed to be the voice of reason towards others. It made her look like a delusional hypocrite when she would give so much helpful, real world advice from time to time then chase after a man who wanted nothing to do with her and ruin his relationships.

I love that the producer countered with “There are Black ppl who aren’t sophisticated”…even in these comments there is so much respectability politics. There are real Kim abd Nikki Parkers in world. Moesha was just as “boy crazy” it was just more palatable because of how she looks and the tone they took. Im so sick of Black ppl tryna limit characters to be this holier than thou,overly sophisticated,digestible to white ppl version of ourselves. Will always love this show.

I was confused. The man was talking about sophistication and the other shows not being African-American friendly, while mentioning The Parkers were liked amongst young audiences. African Americans didn't like the other show because it was too sophisticated, YOUNG African Americans (probably), didn't like the other shows because they wanted to watch a bunch of OTHER YOUNG African Americans in college!

I’m really glad that you delved into the promotion analysis, demographic stats and audience reaction of the show. Very informative and eye-opening because to be honest I never heard any “For Your Love” conversations in the 90s or early 00s. I knew of the show but never paid atttention to it. You’re right-The Parkers was more over the top then it’s originator(Moesha) and did sort of pick up where Wayans Brothers ended months prior. They really picked up on the fun antics in the third season and beyond. I think it worked well for UPN though. I think viewers relate more to Kim than Moesha Mitchell in a way.

What you want is a spin off of this spin off lol beacuse "the parkers" was supposed to be about Kim & Nikki adjusting and going through college life together,not about Nikki and the professors love life

I could have seen myself being a longtime friend of *Yvette Wilson* (Andell) if I knew her. Even though she was famous she had this real and authentic aura about her. You know, an actress that acted in Hollywood but wasn't Hollywood or of Hollywood. I miss her acting so much. May she rest in heaven.

I love The Parkers, but I always said they did Kim dirty on there and Moesha. IDC what anyone says. Countess was so pretty. They reduced her to the big girl who is desperate for a man. I liked her character way more than Moesha's. Yes, I liked Moe's intelligence, but she was so bougie, entitled, a brat, know-it-all, self-righteous and not as innocent as she pretended to be. I hated too how Mo'Nique was the stereotypical big girl who chased a man that didn't want her. Kim didn't deserve for Hakeem to treat her like that. Then they did the same with Nikki and Stanley. They both deserved someone who genuinely liked them for who they were. I never understood why Stanley suddenly wanted her on the last episode. She should've stayed with Kenny for a while and then actually married Johnny. Smh

Exactly how did Hakeem treat her??? He didnt want her and would run away but he never direspected her the way the Professor was with Nikki..When Kim made the cheerleading squad in season 1 moesha got mad at her and Hakeem took up for Kim,by season 3 Hakeem became flirty with Kim..2nd half of season 2 she was no longer chasing Hakeem and got with Michael

As a kid I loved the Parkers so much but as an adult, I can only stomach the 1st 2 seasons because of the level of cringe I get with the way they made Monique’s character so obsessed with the professor!! They took the obsession way too far IMO, they could’ve kept it harmless like they did season 1 but they started centering entire episodes around it & had her looking desperate asf

I think the writers did a horrible injustice to the character of Nikki. They had her chasing the professor even though he said repeatedly that he was not interested. Did they think so little of the character that she would even want someone who said no thanks to her. I didn't watch The Parkers because I didn't want to see a woman who was so pathetic.

Countess shouldn’t’ve fell into that trap of IM NOT GOOD ENOUGH OR FEELING LIKE SHE IS COMPETING. No shade but Jenna seemed to have 1 thing going for her. Countess could’ve countered what was being said instead of augmenting what God gave her naturally. To me, that’s a self esteem issue. You can’t worry about what people think or say most times. SHOUT-OUT TO YVETTE(ANDELL)♥️ May God continue to rest your soul in love.

Damn, when I was in my teens and early 20s back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, *Rodney Jerkins* seemed to be everywhere on the music production tip. He was a MF beast in the 1990s and 2000s. Didn't know that he produced the theme song for The Parkers. My cousin used to work with Jerkins back in the 2000s as both of them are in the music business.

You should do what happened to Christina Milian, she's gorgeous, & talented wrote some massive hits had all the makings to be a Main pop girl but she just didn't really get there, Surprisingly nearly all her songs all went top10 in the UK (think she has 7-8 top10s here) her singles were all 🔥 but she kinda just vanished! Love to see ya take a deep dive into what happened with her career! ❤
