Jujube - an unusual garden delight

Jujubes are crunchy, flavorful Chinese fruits that ripen well in areas with warm summers. In cooler climates like ours, they can be grown in a greenhouse to enjoy the crop in late summer or early fall. When dried, they resemble dates and are delicious plain or can be used in cooking or steeped into a “tea.”

Taller varieties (8’ to 10’) can be pruned to 4’ each year after harvest without much loss to the number of fruits produced. Home gardeners in particular will appreciate the trade off between fewer fruits but greater ease of both netting (to keep the birds off) and picking.

I love to put these in my garden. I live in central Arkansas and have heavy clay soil. I'm trying to raise my trees up on mounds as to have acceptable drainage. Any advice? Thanks.
