Daryl and Olympia Dukakis were the only non-Southern women in Steel Magnolias. Sally Field's mother is from Alabama, I recall. Shirley MacLaine is from Virginia. Dolly Parton of course from Tennessee. Julia Roberts is from Georgia, near Atlanta. Olympia's character I think was said to be from Savannah. There are Greek folks in Savannah since the early 1900s if not earlier. Don't know if the story was tweaked to accommodate her being in the film. Steel Magnolias is a chick flick, with the main attraction being the interplay of the women, and each one's individual performance. The dialogue and plot are not great but the ensemble makes it a good view. Julia and Sally did the heavy lifting, but Dolly, Shirley, Daryl and Olympia were a good/great casting combination and pulled their weight.
